As a homage to Bob Diaco I would like to start a tradition on IE after a game: The ND Defense Monster Awards.

Look at it this way ND Fans. The Kelly staff has built a MONSTER DEFENSE. So . . .

freddy.jpg

For this week against Michigan State I would reflect Bob Diaco's golden ball award and nominate Manti Teo for the "Freddy."

(We need several or more awards per week, biggest hit, best overal effort, best team play, sky is the limit! Other awards could include the Jason, Werewolf, and the Banshee award, etc. I would define the Freddy award for Manti as "the player flying around the field, slashing and wreaking the most havoc, making the game a nightmare for the other team." You all would do a much better job defining other awards. But I think this could be fun and go on for a while.

I like this! Biggest hit goes to Tuitt on his sack that popped the ball out!

I love Diaco. That dude says the funniest $hit. I see why these young guys connect with him so well.

Manti for sure this week. The guy is an amazing player. We are very fortunate to have been able to have him on our team. By the end of this year, I expect him to turn into a legend.

I think the Werewolf Award should go to a defensive player that "transformed," meaning they played above their usual level, had a coming out party (first game action? first start?), or demonstrated on a big play that they can "turn it on."

I'd give Prince Shembo the "Bane" the way he ran through Sparty's left tackle all night long.

I'll go ahead and give him the Werewolf too. He looked like a beast out there, playing to the potential we know he has. He transformed from potentially being dominant, to actually dominating. It was splendid.

Okay, we have the Jason Award for the biggest single hit to Stephon Tuitt for MSU.

The Bane Award for domination of offensive opposition to Prince Shembo for MSU.

The Freddy to Manti, and the Werewolf Award for transitional preformance, above and beyond. What else? Take it and run . . .

The Ghost Award goes to the MSU coaching staff for completely disappearing as soon as it was evident BK and co. were outcoaching them.

The Pale Man. The child devouring-monster from Pan's Labyrinth.

It goes to however eats the opponents precious football in the form of a turnover. This week, Manti gets it for his INT.

Maybe a Dracula award for whoever drained the life blood out the opponents on a specific play.

or

An Alien award for whoever dishes out a chest-bursting hit during the game.

I like it...I saw Bobby D's face though when asked...and he didn't seem tickled about the fact that the Freddy K. stuff got out of the locker room...

I don't see the harm in him sayin' it...I took it that he meant they were menacing and everywhere....and even when they weren't, their presence was fealt, and it changed the game....it wasn't comparing our boys to murderous finger-knife-wearin' psychopaths...I think folks are a little sensative based on Pinkett's deal...Relax Bobby...we get ya.

He seemed like he is more unhappy with the fact that there were cameras in the locker room than anything.

I see what you are saying...maybe this was his way of telling the ND media folks they get a little too close...

The staff is not too fond of und.com.. that's to be expected though. They'd like to keep every detail a secret and stay under the radar as long as possible. All bets are off WHEN they roll into Norman 7-0.. Rick Reilly will truly see how relevant ND football is then.

compliments of bogs:

ICON MSU Game Day - Notre Dame Football - YouTube

he also said as a general comment on the topic:

"Listen anyone can do an experiment. Close their eyes, imaging Bob, Brian, and Chuck put together the best product possible. Then imagine them building a brick wall around it, so all we saw was one paragraph reports with box scores. Then the next step would be none of us caring. No one buying tickets, etc., etc, How good of a product then? The point is, there has to be a healthy balance with the fan base. Why would anyone want to kill off that kind of solid gold?

I still think a homage is right on target."
