very good, best academic BCS conference, also has traditional powers (FSU, Miami) and of course the basketball is going to be awesome (cant wait to see Duke come to South Bend)

I say keep Purdue and ditch the 2nd Pac team.

Playing Stanford and USC gives the Irish a game in Cali every year though. I think the Michigan rivalry is going on hiatus soon anyway so I don't mind keeping Purdue and rotating another Big Ten team.

It would be great to pair up FSU and Miami to have a game in Florida every year but I don't think ND is willing to play at Miami because of previous fan incidents there.

I agree that we need to keep a game in California every year. How many players each cycle do we pull out of the west (not including this one)? We really can't afford to lose that draw.

the acc non BCS bowl tie ins are very important part of this...we had lousy bowl deals and had used up our elective champs sports one last year.

Does anyone have any info on a timeline? Are we going to ride out the 27 months?

My opinions:

Good fit for academic wise

I worry how this will effect recruiting in California and Texas

ND would potentially play two option teams a year. GT is considerably more athletic than Navy.

ACC makes sense basketball wise, I think the "big 12" is a much better fit football wise.

A few thoughts:

1) 5 ACC + 3 B1G + USC/Navy = only two games to mix it up.

2) Do Boston College and Pittsburgh remain annual rivals? That would mean that five games annually are different.

3) Does anyone see Notre Dame dropping Stanford and bringing back the Miami annual series? Think about it. In the 1980's Miami was the ONLY Florida power, today that state is split up by three elite powers and a handful of programs constantly taking away the scraps. I don't think we'd have to worry about the Hurricanes going on a 1980's-level dynastic run again.

We don't play any games in Texas as it is so I don't see why it would hurt us. If we keep the SC rivalry I don't think it will have much affect on CA recruiting either.

Except for the game at Jerry World next year, right?

Anyone else think we will see ACC football improve because of this? I know it's probably not a HUGE recruiting draw, but telling kids "hey, if you go here, you get to play Notre Dame" has to have a little effect, right?

The Irish also start a series with Texas in 2015 after Oklahoma leaves the schedule.

It would be nice to keep a game in that part of the country but the schedule is already brutal without it. Five ACC teams plus USC, Stanford, OK/TX and UM/MSU? Even if the other three are Purdue, Navy and a bad team that's rough.

I really like this move. If we were going to join a conference as a partial member this is the best fit. Quality academics overall. A couple natural rivals. Helps with recruiting on the east coast, Florida, etc. As a huge basketball fan, I couldn't be happier to play Duke and other schools consistently while still playing Syracuse and Pitt.

Here's a sample schedule

Navy
at Michigan
Big 12 School
Air Force/Army
at BC
USC
Wake Forest
Georgia Tech
at Florida State
at Stanford
Pittsburgh
at BYU

Tough but fun. In a playoff system, 10 wins would get us in probably.

You can probably expect the Shamrock Series to be played in Texas once every few years. They have already played in Texas in 2009 and 2013.

I like this a lot!
After moving to Tampa, I'll miss the USF Bball game, but pick up Tallahassee and Miami, not to mention my company is HQ'd in Raleigh, so I'll find an excuse for UNC/Duke/NC State/etc!

Football:
1-5: ACC (Pitt and BC always?)
6: Navy
7: USC
8: MSU
9:Stanford

Open: (Purdue/Army/AF/Michigan/SEC/B12)

we aren't going to play 5 ACC teams, USC, Stanford, Navy, Michigan, Michigan State, and an SEC and Big 12 team. That's a ridiculous schedule. We will have to have 2 gimme games a year.

Any word on when this will/would start?
Will ND still be playing Big East Basketball this coming season?

Dream schedule:
1. Navy
2. Michigan
3. FSU (1 ACC every year)
4. Miami (2 ACC every year)
5. Stanford
6. USC
7. BC (3 ACC every year)
8. Pitt (4 ACC every year)
9. *ACC Opponent* (rotates)
10. *ACC Opponent* (rotates)
11. Purdue/Michigan St (Alternates)
12. *Shamrock Series* (Rutgers, Arizona St, Texas A&M, WVU, etc)

Not sure if its even possible with the contract between ND and ACC but IMO its ideal schedule.

Duke, Virginia, Maryland?
UNC, NC State and Wake Forest aren't setting the world on fire either.

I'm guessing the ACC teams would rotate, not be the same 5 teams.
That would be a cool schedule for , but bruuuuuuuuuutal.

A more likely schedule is

1. Mid-major or bottom feeder BCS
2. Navy
3. Michigan/Michigan State (rotation)
4. ACC #1
5. ACC #2
6. Stanford or USC
7. ACC #3
8. ACC #4
9. Shamrock Series
10. Mid-major, bottom feeder BCS, or different team like BYU, Purdue, Texas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, etc.
11. ACC #5
12. Stanford or USC

Looks like ND would be at the business end of a severe jailsexing to me.

I think this is much more likely:

1- @Navy
2- Michigan
3- @Michigan State
4- Purdue
BYE
5- Miami (ACC #1)
6- OPEN (SHAMROCK SERIES)
7- Pittsburgh (ACC #2)
8- OPEN
9- @Boston College (ACC #3)
10- @ACC #4
11- ACC #5
12- @USC

1- OPEN
2- @Michigan
3- Michigan State
4- @Purdue
BYE
5- USC
6- Navy (SHAMROCK SERIES)
7- @Pittsburgh (ACC #2)
8- OPEN
9- Boston College (ACC #3)
10- ACC #4
11- @ACC #5
12- @Miami (ACC #1)

I don't see any possibility of a "rotation" with our oldest or most fervid rivals. Rotating Michigan State/Michigan is an extremely unlikely scenario.

There has to be a 0% chance the USC or Navy rivalries end. Really the expendable rivalries were Boston College, Pittsburgh, and Stanford. With the ACC deal, it looks like Stanford had to get the short end of the stick.

As you can see, I took the liberty of assuming that Notre Dame will continue to want to alternate ending their season in a good-weather location. It used to be USC/Miami, now it's USC/Stanford; I see a switch back to Miami in this scenario.

I hope ND pushes for Home and Aways with FSU and Miami, not just because I would be at every one of those games, but because I believe it would help with recruiting. Similar to the situation we have with Stanford & USC. Outside of those 2 Navy is the only rivalry that I think we can't part ways with. Of course I'd like to see us continue to play Michigan and Purdue is a nice rivalry that we should be able to win 90% of the time.

Swarbrick is a boss. For better or for worse, he'll end up being one of ND's most significant ADs.
