US ambassador, 3 others killed in attacks on Libya mission - World News

By NBC News and wire reports
Updated at 8:18 a.m. ET: The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed after protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad stormed the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

...

On Tuesday in Benghazi, a large mob stormed the U.S. consulate, with gunmen firing their weapons, said Wanis al-Sharef, an Interior Ministry official in Benghazi.
A witness said attackers fired automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades at the consulate as they clashed with Libyans hired to guard the facility.

Outnumbered by the crowd, the Libyan security forces did little to stop them, al-Sharef said.

...

Stevens was typically based in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, but was apparently visiting Benghazi for the opening of an American cultural center there, The Wall Street Journal said.

And to make it even worse, the Republicans are already making this into a political attack on Obama.

How about some compassion for a moment?

The thing to keep in mind is that almost everything is political. That's the name of the game and has been the name of the game since Day 1. Just be thankful that we don't duel at 20 paces anymore. It's funny when people talk about the political incivility like it's something new. And as a public we end up playing their game when we get upset over what someone says instead of getting upset over real issues. I forget the radio guy who says it's the "grapefruit principle" or something similar. If the media showed a grapefruit on a table for a week, most of this country would get totally invested in the grapefruit, like it matters. In my opinion, the best thing to do is study history, read smart people who write about political philosophy etc. like de Tocqueville, and then take in some news media with a huge grain of salt. Because history repeats and most good political philosophies are relevant to any time.

Where? Link?

And, as an aside, it's beyond ironic to see you calling out Republicans for "compassion for a moment"...

Romney's first tweet yesterday: https://twitter.com/MittRomney/status/245509634897633281

Obama's first tweet yesterday: https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/245524020190130176

It's not ironic. And, I didn't say that the Dems aren't guilty of the same type of behavior. I'm just tired of seeing everything turned political... especially immediately following a tragic event.

BTW, that first Obama tweet wasn't posted by him. He did, however, tweet the next message which he signs with "bo" that pays respect to 9/11.

Good point WD. Heading to the store to buy some more salt! ;-)

It was Bush again, right? You're spinning a mulligan.

Meanwhile, we have murdered diplomats.

I know correlation is not causation but both had a successful Arab Spring and are both now run by the Muslim Brotherhood which was sponsored by the U.S. in both countries during their respective revolutions. Super!

What baffles me is that we continue to support these countries. Dumping millions into them, trying to reform governments and gain popularity....

Guess what? They hate us and always will. So lets stay outta it and let them kill each other in the streets.

Stop putting our people at risk. You will NEVER change the attitude over there. We are the devil to those people.

I can agree with this to a point. But, it's not all of those people. Just some of them. Just like we have some on the other extreme in this country.

I agree completely. But some would say we need stability in that region. Problem is we've never had it, even with our continued presence.

Romney ratchets up criticism of Obama on initial response to embassy attacks - NBC Politics

Look, I don't like either party, but why does everything have to be political?

I have come to the conclusion with WaveDomer's help that I just need to ignore the fact that this happens. So, I'm done.

And he condemed the statement....he didn't blame Obama for the event.

And you're right...it's all political posturing. The powerful want to remain powerful and will use EVERY advantage to do so. It's a sad fact...but a fact.

Republicans, Democrats....Doesn't matter.

100%. No matter how hard we try...or how many American lives and dollars we throw at that region, it's never going to change. It's weaved into their culture.

We are the enemy.

Everything you said is true...the difference I see is that our government, and our people go bat **** crazy on extremists who plan, or execute violence...

Who said? And what difference does it make? We're discussing the event. It's relevent to the thread.

Fine, after Romney completely botched the handling of the tragic events in Libya. After Dems, Reps, and Journalist told him to STFU. Romney decided to double down and even release a memo with talking points for Republicans on how best to defend Romney in this situation. Here you go.

Consensus has been building that the attack in benghazi was a 9/11 terrorist attack.....an attack that was organized and not spontaneous....and attck that was called for in a video by the little egyptian doctor that runs Al Queada now....A challenge by him to his supporters in libya to avenge the death of the "lion of libya" some deadbeat we killed in yemen with an airstrike by drone in june.

You can expect a swift and deadly reponse by the USA on the group that carried this out---most of the libya government is now being run by Expats that really like the USA and popular support in the country, unlike egypt, is very pro-american since Khadafi was dumped by the western effort.

All this is coming to light as i type this---i expect the white house has know most of this since last night--Poor Mr Romney was completely out of the loop and ignorant of all this when he decided to dive into the fray with his assessment---very dumb decision.

Looks like we had a 9/11 attack on a very small scale against one of the weakest american targets one could find. A vulnerable consulate in a country without a strong police or army and somewhat chaotic political atmosphere.

Ambassador Stevens and his Gamer associates were by all accounts wonderful people--condolences.

Anyone that believes it was because of some movie is sadly mistaken....and I wouldn't doubt if the movie was actually produced by said terrorists so they could misdirect the reason for doing it.

... when people talk about the political incivility like it's something new.
In the 1920s (I believe) Winston Churchill was standing for a constituency in London (for Parliament). he was yto give a speech at some oction and found out that "thugs" hired by an oppenent were to disrupt his talks. He found his own thugs and the meeting turned into a melee. His close friend, F.E. Smith, was stabbed in the leg. In 1912 Churchill was assulted with a cane by a supporter for women's sufferage for his lack of support.

In 1970 liberals weren't too interested in civility, nor were they in 2004. Nor were republicans in 1980.

If it is important to people, then they will engage however they feel they must. And maybe that means they find grapefruit important. Not for me to judge.

“The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.” - Churchill

“It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.” - Churchill

1. Drill oil in our own country...
2. Reduce our dependency on oil itself
3. Stay the hell out of the Middle East. If anything, it should be limited to the UN....
4. End all $ to the Middle East, or require $ for $ trade in oil.

Let it get bad, let it fail. Let them fight each other. Unfortunately the only thing that will stimulate change is failure and suffering over time. As long as we (the West in general) are around, they have a cause. Once we are gone, they have nothing to rally against. Change will come, but the pro-Western movement is small, young, but growing. It will just take time.
