I don't know....on a personal level I don't think it was "wrong" for Cierre (or anyone else) to smoke pot, and I feel very strongly that teams and leagues should not be testing for it or punishing use. On the other hand, he is on a team and that requires some sacrifices. If one of those sacrifices is following dumb rules, you gotta do it. When you don't, there are consequences for you and your teammates. All of us that have been on teams have had to do stuff we didn't want to do for the good of the team.

I'm not judging Cierre as a person for smoking pot. Doesn't bother me in the least. I do think it is fair to criticize him as a teammate and team member, though. Its part of the deal.

I mean, does anyone else think this is a sham? Everyone smokes weed, whether in the work place or in colleges..etc and its just common knowledge, yet, if you test positive BAM! you're cooked.
Just seems like bs to me.
Obviously it is the law and it can't be left unpunished, especially at ND but I'm just saying in general seems like BS.

First off, no, not everybody smokes weed. As a professional I can say with certainty the majority of my colleagues do not smoke weed in the workplace at college, etc. So where you come off making a statement like that is a mystery.

Secondly, we are not privy to salient details in this case. Who can say for sure that this is in fact a failed blood test?

Thirdly, while I agree to a certain extent that marajuana use should not be illegal, it is presently illegal. All Notre Dame football players understand that smoking weed could result in suspension from the team and all of them know that they will be tested for marajuana. Any player who does use marajuana, does so knowing what they are risking. I can't say that I think it is BS. Staying away from marajuana is hardly a huge sacrifice considering what a player gains in return. I don't feel one bit sorry for a player who shows so little self control.

NOTE: since I don't know that the drug test rumor regarding Cierre is true, my comments are all hypothetical.

he wasnt arrested and didnt test positive but he....what...i'm confused.

i dont mind BK's punishment. i'm not mad at cierre, i'm disappointed. not much on justin's situation, probably because he's not a "name". kids do dumb things. adults do dumb things. getting caught, you pay for what you get, and people that have big dreams and/or other people depending on them should feel doubly as bad.

i think this situation calls for a CODE RED!

What comes to mind (THIS IS CONJECTURE) when I hear:

1) Not arrested
2) Did not fail any drug tests

Cierre, knowing his demise was inevitable, admitted to his mistake when given the news he'd be taking a drug test. But in reality, none of us know exactly what went down and may never.

Kelly took care of it and I for one can wash my hands of it and prepare for Saturday. I mean seriously, I have like 500 filet in a blankets to wrap..

What affects your program more is giving people the impression that, if you screw up, your value to the team will have anything to do with the severity of your punishment. That's how you create a sense of entitlement in top athletes.

I think timing matters.
Floyd's thing happened at a time when he could do his penance in the spring and work his way back (also at a time when he could have bailed on the program, which would have been pretty easy but I think we all agree wouldn't have been the best outcome for him personally).
Rees' thing happened later than that, so there was some time for penance, but not a ton. Hence the one game suspension.
Wood's thing seems to have happened around the start of fall camp, right? No time to work it out, plus, not quite how you want a senior leader starting the year. So you send a message with two games.
Not saying I completely agree, but I can see the internal logic.
