The best thing Rick Reilly ever did was "The Announcement", with Lebron James announcing he would go to Miami, oh wait....even that sucked.
As to twenty years of irrelevance, ND has won 151 games in the last 20 season (1992-2011). Ranking them 23rd in the country in wins over that time.
I-A Wins 1992-2011
Ranks 26th in winning percentage over the same time period.
I-A Winning Percentage 1992-2011
I just feel that complete irrelevance, as is associated with ND, would be outside the top 25. Just a sign of the times, everyone is a 'freak out artist'.
But we played an easy schedule We haven't been awful, we just have not been at Notre dame's level in the prior decades.
HA! I love when a woman calls someone "douche nozzles"! Maybe its just that they have more credibility when it comes to that term!
Nice edit.
So I can't like Reilly and Cowheard? What's wrong with that? I don't agree with everything in this article, but I like his work overall and he's written some FANTASIC pieces (his one after 9-11 is one of the best of all time)
This was my response to Rick's piece:
Rick,
Read your piece about ND football. You simply don't get it. People love ND not for just the wins & losses. That is part of it. Yes, for a long time they were the gold standard on the gridiron. But people still love ND because they do it the right way. Their athletes actually go to class. ND football has averaged a near perfect graduation rate for almost a decade, while most of the SEC hovers below 40%. There are no big scandals like PSU, for the most part their players don't threaten to kill their girlfriends like several Florida Gators have done in the past or get caught committing felonies, like TCU and their drug ring. Again, Notre Dame does it the right way. This is something we all, as Americans, long for. That is why we still love ND. Those gold helmets remind of what we should aspire to be. That's why your article has it all wrong. We should punish and demote all the schools doing it the wrong way and encourage others to follow ND's lead. Go IRISH!!!
Notre Dame Irish have relegated themselves to insignificance - ESPN
The hater-ness is strong with this one.
Eloquint and to the point Irsh YJ. My words sometimes get a little more intense but I agree with everything you said. The haters dont bother me anymore because its true. I wonder if Reilly is a fan of ND and is trying to light a fire. More than likely not just another espn waterboy. But these words are true and Notre Dame needs to do something about it.He's a clown, but it's not like he's telling tales, or misrepresenting facts. I'm Irish to the core, but we all need to take a big gulp of reality. ND is not irrelevant, but the FB program has been tier 2 at best the last 20 years. At this stage we are only relevant (FB terms) because of our fanbase and history. I'm glad to see clowns like this write the crap they write. Hopefully it increases the motivation factor and stimulates team performance. At the end of the day, just win, and all these clowns have to take a big gulp of STFU.
The fact that people have to right about ND being irrelevant means ND isn't irrelevant. Nobody writes articles about others schools in the nation being irrelevant because, well they are really irrelavant.
One thing though that I think bears keeping in mind...any publicity is good publicity.
Yeah well, Penn State has had a lot of publicity lately, and I wouldn't call it good...
Bigger picture, tho' Reilly is a huge douche, for sure, and there's nothing original or compelling in that article.
I did wonder though... is this part really true?
"top paying [Notre Dame] a bowl bonus of $1.3 million when it DOESN'T go to a bowl game. That's right: Notre Dame gets a $1.3 million bowl bonus simply for dressing up the stupid leprechaun."
If so, how does that happen? Just curious...
Notre Dame will also now received $4.5 million for playing in a BCS game and $1 million when they don't. This is a change from the previous arrangement in which the Irish received $14 million for a BCS appearance and no cash otherwise.
Notre Dame is guaranteed 1/66th of the net revenues after expenses, or approximately $1.3 million. Notre Dame will receive $4.5 million when its team is a participant.
In breaking down the revenue distributed by the BCS, the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference are the big winners. Each league put two teams — Ohio State and Iowa from the Big Ten; Alabama and Florida from the SEC — into BCS bowls, meaning those two football-mad leagues will each receive $22.2 million.
The other leagues that qualify automatically into the BCS — the ACC, Big 12, Big East and Pac-10 — each receive $17.7 million, accounting for $115.2 million to be distributed among the big six conferences’ 65 schools. Conferences typically share their BCS and other bowl revenue evenly, although the Big 12 is an exception and pays more to the bowl teams.
A bonus of $4.5 million is paid for each additional team that makes a BCS bowl, which is why the SEC and Big Ten made more this year.

Laughably inaccurate statements from the article:
