I think Shumate quickly becomes a force in the secondary... Maybe getting the starting job for the 2013 season, not sure how much playing time he will get this year though.
He should definitely be at worst on the 2 deep in 2013 and I'd give him an edge to start also.

He's a virtual lock to play in 2013, since we lose so many veteran Safeties after this season (Slaughter, Motta, McCarthy, and Salvi). Collinsworth will probably be the only S with more reps than him on the depth chart at that point.

The real question is whether he can force his way onto the field this year. If Slaughter ends up playing a lot of FCB, and Motta doesn't step up his game, I could definitely see it happening.

What about Jamoris Slaughter? He was a top 150 player coming out of high school. Most publications had him as a safety a one or two at corner. but, still to my point Slaughter was the biggest safety prospect since Zibbi.

Jamoris was in the 10-15 range safety wise. But you are correct in saying he was the biggest prospect since Zbi until Shumate. Elijah's rankings are almost identical to Zbi when he came out of HS.

It's crazy to see how much recruiting has changed in recent years with the amount of offers that go out now. When you look back at Zbi, he was top 10 at his position and he only had offers from like 4 others schools. That is almost unheard of in today's environment. Most of these kids at least 15-20 offers to choose from.

What's crazy is I think Tom Lemming had Harrison Smith rated the highest out of everyone back then. if I remember correctly he had Smith in the top 100.

You are correct about Shumate and Slaughter. i thought Slaughter was rated higher, but Shumate was rated higher except for ESPN which really liked Slaughter.

He was told during his recruitment he could see pt on both sides of ball if I am remembering correctly. 22 is still a sweet number.

Fixed it for you. He was a big back in HS, I prefer the staff maximizes his potential at Safety, but what the hell do I know?

Swype, it has it's advantages and disadvantages. I agree with you in maximizing his potential but if Prosise, Baratti, Turner show they are all capable plus our other young safeties I am not opposed to him becoming our big back of the future with Mahone.

Moved to CB per BK. Very interesting. Says he could see some time in sub packages.

OMG THE SKY IS FALLING!!! Lets pull up our big boy (girl) pants and stop freaken out. The coaches will put the best players suited for the position in the right spot. I personnally like this move. A big physical DB at the LOS and from what I remember his speed is solid. He can work on the hips...

I see him filling in the Slaughter type role. Nickel safety/hybrid safety this year.

Kinda how Antrel Rolle played for the Giants this year too.

Still can't believe that the guy that we've virtually never even seen in pass coverage has been moved to CB ... it goes to show how little we really know about these guys until they get to campus. Of all the young DBs we have, I never would have guessed that Shumate would move to CB. He was such a beast against the run in his high school film.

I will reserve judgement until I see him play, but initially this is bummy......, he was gonna be my John Lynch type safety.

Over-analyzing of course but this move says a few things to me:
1) Our other safety prospects are looking good
2) Shumate has good man to man technique
3) Something we already knew from his film- He plays really well near the l.o.s.

The only thing that concerns me is our recruiting of an elite CB this class as we have now moved two over already, giving us 7 scholarship CB's, and 2.5 commited (.5=Fuller and his ability to play wr/cb).

we are deep enough at safety for this to happen...really don't see this as a bad idea

I agree. The point seems to be taking a guy who is physically able to contribute right now out of a crowded position and putting him somewhere where we need him more this year. I assume that next year, after Motta, Slaughter, McCarthy and Salvi are all gone, he will move back to safety.
