I wrote a displeased comment on his profile just now at 247.

I'm about to be an ISD'er if this **** continues...

I'm missing something. Just checked his 247 profile and he's a 4-star, 91 rating. Why the long face?

Well, they dropped him 60 spots and to a 91 rating the same week he committed to ND. He had been the same ranking for 6+ months and now he drops? Did James compete somewhere this week and do poorly? I'm just sick of this crap. ESPN pulled the same **** when Gunner Kiel enrolled at ND this January after decommitting from LSU. Darby on 247 got bumped to a 5 star right as he flipped to FSU. Everything is just such a sham with these sites. Thought for a while that 247 was different but it's not.

Is it possible that James simply kept a low profile for those 6 months, thereby falling off the national recruiting radar? Committing to ND out of the blue raised his profile considerably, which may have caused the services to give him a serious reevaluation. IIRC, his junior year production was a disappointment after his monster sophomore year.

Have a hard time reaching for my tin foil hat on this one. Recruiting services have every incentive to inflate the sh!t out of the ratings for those schools with the largest fan bases; can't see why they'd drop him arbitrarily.

Could it not be that everyone forgot about him, including 247, ratings should be maintained and maybe they re-evaluated him.

I had a longer response but it was mostly ranting. I don't know, maybe I am overreacting, but this sort of thing just seems to happen way too frequently. I would be less upset if they provided rationale, which I suppose they still have the opportunity to do.

Only it's the other way round... Any time a kid mentions ND he gets an immediate 3 star boost... that's the only reason ND even has classes in the top 50 anymore... Colin Cowherd says so..........

I really don't care about his ranking. I only care that he is 220lbs, runs a 4.4, and has tendencies of running over people without showing any signs of remorse.

Oh and most importantly, he is committed to ND.

I don't think he attended many (if any) camps in the summer circuits. Other guys have and moved up as a result.

Hopefully he shows up to his senior year in a little better shape. Interested to see his Hudl videos from the early part of the season.

I just don't agree with that logic. What is the motivation behind dropping a ND recruit in rankings? We are arguably the largest CFB fan-base and stretch worldwide like no other.

Wouldn't you think if they decided to go the dishonest, make a buck route, they'd cater to us? Wasn't that the theory as to why ND players kept showing up on the cover of sport magazines? To sell them.

I don't get your point here. Are you saying they should make an effort to be less objective?

I don't think 247 did anything dishonest. Other guys have showed up and performed against the top recruits in the country, and they have moved up as a result.

He's saying IF they were going to be less objective you'd expect it to be pro ND... not anti... correct?

Corey Robinson wasn't even ranked and when he committed to ND he immediately jumped to an 85 rating. Because they don't do mass updates they obviously don't update everyone, especially those that don't have a lot of recent activity. Since there has been a spike in activity they reevaluated his tape against other camp performers. I have seen the same thing happen with Michigan commits.

Voice of reason.

I just can't see it either. ND has the most geographically diverse and one of the largest CFB fan bases in the country, it's hard for me to think of a reason any service would actively conspire to **** us off. Another counterpoint, if I'm remembering this correctly, hasn't Jaylon and a few of our O-line commits received bumps up since committing to us?

Guys, it makes way more sense for them to drop the ratings of all committed prospects, regardless of school, so that the prospects being recruited until the very end are as highly rated as possible. This would draw the most amount of hits from their site.

Think about it - are you more likely to check out the profile of a 3 star athlete ND is chasing, or a mid to high four star. Furthermore, a number of different fan bases would follow this thinking for an uncommitted recruit, while a high committed recruit would only be visited by the respective fan base, and even they would visit much more infrequently than if it was an uncommitted prospect of similar rank. Not saying it's right, but it is a business model I could see happening.

I'm in the business of the best recruiting service and I feel like 247 has taken a strange stance against this recruit. Or how they were left in the cold about his recruitment.

This "still things to work out" thing is a little odd and stand-off-ish in my opinion.

Am I wrong in feeling this way?

I just was detailing a strategy that I think could be used. I personally really like 24/7, but it is obvious they feel Jamel committed without the staff being completely comfortable with it / ready to fully accept it.

Yes, ACamp.. I don't think they are doing anything dishonest, but if they were IMO it would benefit them to be pro-ND... Being that we could subscribe the sh*t out of them.

It seems a little too paranoid to think they are dropping ranks just because a kid commits to ND. I can't think of any legitimate motivation behind that.

Also, I really don't care. I just want to wake up on Sep 1st already.

I understand.

You're a stud and I'm mostly happy with 247, but they've yet to even create a headliner about the kid.

It's weird when they're posting stuff on 2014 kids way further off the radar.

It's almost disrespectful to the potential ball player.

I know a guy well connected in the Katy football community. He has talked to coaches that say Jamel kind of believed his own hype after the monster sophomore season, and maybe didn't put in the work leading up to a so-so junior year. Sounds like they are working on getting his head straight and putting in the work to go with the tremendous talent.

I would expect a big senior year and a fight to keep him blue and gold once he is back on the national radar.

Hopefully he works hard for his senior year and keeps that attitude going into ND.

Exactly. So weird that they are so quiet about him.

I can feel the train leaving the station!

Seriously guys, why do you think the recruiting services are that powerful? Everybody, close your eyes and picture a room full of junkies, laying around trying not to **** themselves, wondering where their next high will come from. Maybe junkies is too strong of a word, too strong of an analogy. Maybe clowns is more appropriate. Clowns with a one ring show.

Now. Does anybody know the difference techniques Kelly uses to evaluate talent, than the recruiting services? They are different, and more scientific, but I doubt that Kelly uses tissue samples. Or does he? Point being that the recruiting services are dartboards, where Kelly is a forensics lab. Most coaching staffs are a popularity contest: dartboards+other coachingstaffs interest=hot prospect. If ND, VT, WF, or Alabama are interested, grab 'em! These are some of the best progam evaluators. Texas and USC don't count because Texas just plain gets all the top Texas talent. And USC gets the 5*'s they want.

Are you sure the ratings services even know how to watch film? And what are their standards? Has anyone yet figured how an offensive linman's stock can go down at a non-contact camp? Less that recruit drooling on himself and playing with paper boats in mud puddles? Better yet, how we can watch film of a tackle manhandling a defensive end, and the tackle's stock dropping and the defensive end's going through the roof?

Tell me. I really want to know. This is just one thing about college football I don't understand. But I do believe that I will not put any stock in the whole circus until someone explains this show to me.

Personally I don't get too excited one way or another on how a kid is ranked. The bottom line is how he performs once he's on the team. We all know how a five start can flame out and how a 3 star can turn out to be better than advertised.

Until the recruiting services tell us the background and qualifications of the guys ranking the kids, I will continue to use them simply for info and not a predictor of things to come.

If I recall, I think Cinco Ranch also had a stacked team his soph. year -- made it deep into the playoffs with like 10 wins. They were still pretty good last year but didn't have the same team.

verbal commitment confirmation

247 has finally listed Jamel James as an ND verbal commitment. On their new composit grading scale, he's a 89.
