I do not know how hard it is to get the actual teaching degree, but I will tell you the hoops you now have to jump thru to actually get the license and therefore the job in the state of Indiana have increased exponentially in the 15 years my since my wife got her 1st teaching job

It varies from state to state... oddly, it seems the states with the path of least resistence tend to have the better data in terms of student success...

In Cali, Oregon and Washington (they share the same system) you basically have to go through a program and internship that compares to the average doctor... and even after you are 'in' the mandatory trainings and programs are simply endless...

Please...

Please...Please...Please don't bring Jesus into a politcal ideological debate!

BTW Jesus was not American so he would not have been a member of either party or voted here

I didn't, talk to your friend and his "Jesus would vote republican" GIF. So please, please, please, if you're going to jump on me, know what you're saying first. Thanks. And I'm well aware Jesus is middle eastern, doesn't change the fact he's a socialist.

Good lord you aren't lying!! I should be starting my credential program in the fall and even after it's completed, I'll still have to do a ton of stuff afterwards before I'm cleared...it's insane but i just want to provide a positive male influence to inner-city kids and teach math so i guess, whatever it takes...

To restate, because people are digging in heels. As a former teacher with very hard-working teachers in my family, my opinion is:

Some teachers are great and deserve excellent compensation, some are bad and deserve to get canned, most are average and deserve something average.

I find the "teachers (as a collective) are heroes" shtick to be pretty exhausting. It seems way too self-congratulatory for my taste, and I don't see teachers as some sort of abused class.

So I posted this in another thread but I guess I'll post it again. It seems the keys to a good educational model as demonstrated by the Finnish approach are: First, a highly trained, highly paid workforce and second, equitable distribution of resources throughout the entire educational system. Chalk one up for socialism.

Why Are Finland's Schools Successful? | People & Places | Smithsonian Magazine

Socialism and Marxism don't work. They eventually fail 100% of the time.

Unfortunately, socialism and Marxism policies mixed with free enterprise/capitalism destroys too...see the US direction economically.

Bring back the paddle. Kids know you can't lay a hand on them and it shows. A fifty year old friend was talking about how they paddled kids in his high school in front of everyone in the lunch room. In my school I don't think it ever left the wall but its symbolized what could happen.

There have always been parents whose precious little Johnny could do no wrong, its just that these days they seem to be the vast majority. Kind of like what the unions do if you try to discipline any of their members. (oh yes I did)

Wake me up when America becomes an ethnically, religiously, racially and linguistically homogenous country of 5 million, then I'll jump right on board.

A lot of communes work great of small farms with few, like-minded people.

Not a lot of world superpowers work that way.

Must be nice when we're Canada's army and protection.......

Like you said, I hate when libby's compare us to countries the size of Texas or the population of NY...Come on.

We're a society built on individual freedoms. We don't work that way. And it will never work that way.

Jesus, was not a socialist.

He asked that you work hard, treat people with respect, and help others when they're in need.

He didn't ask that you work hard just to give your earnings to an overreaching government/dictator that will redistribute to the non-productive of society as they see fit through broken programs that are unsustainable because they are built on the premise that the few can bear the costs of the many.

So no, he wasn't a socialist.

Countries the size of Texas? Finland doesn't have the population of Houston And the Fins all look alike, speak alike, think alike and practice the same religion. So working for "the good of society" comes naturally to them. For Americans? Not so much... Using Finland as a model for the world is the height of Left-Wing Lunacy.

Successful troll was successful.

I guess. I was just trying to be funny with that picture because I laugh and don't take politics seriously. It's all the same to me at this point. Republican/Democrat..whatever Probably a bad way to think of it. Either way, she didn't find it funny so I guess this applies to me:

Quite the enlightening nutshell. Care to elaborate?

I have seen first hand the sense of entitlement that our culture has today. It is prevalent in schools, sports, the workplace etc. Entitlement destroys one's work ethic and sours one's overall outlook on life in general. As a nation, we have seen the temporary hand up turned into the perpetual hand out. For too many people, dependency upon others has become a way of life.

As a way of potentially addressing some of the academic woes in our society and socialistic leanings of the entitlments, I would suggest that education be returned back to being a privilege. Not a financial privilege, but an I need education to better myself in the world and therefore value my education kind of privilege. If a student doesn't want to be in school, doesn't want to learn, he or she is stealing the resources of the other students. Imagine a teacher that would have a classroom full of engaged students, or at least void of the students who abuse the system. How much more would they accomplish? How much less stress would the teacher and other students have? By eliminating the easy out of government entitlements, each person would become individually responsible for themselves. By tying it to a high school diploma, the student would have 12 years of purposeful education under their belt. With that as their upbringing, would they not more likely be a positive contributor to society?

As for the government, there are not too many projects the national government has been involved in that they have not screwed up. There is a reason our constitution was written as a document that more described what the government cannot do instead of describing all its potential growth. We are the United States and I think the Federal side needs to be minimized and the state and local side be better utilized. The further away you concentrate the power from the people, the less likely it is that power actually represents the people who chose it.

Thanks for the question. I hope my musings were clear as it is difficult for me to write complete thoughts on the mobile.

I do believe free market capitalism has crashed and burned quite spectacularly twice now in some peoples life times and was saved only by socializing the risk and responsibility for those who were the main culprits (the financial sectors). Every reasonable analysis I have seen points to unregulated derivatives in the housing sector as the driver that got the latest party started. The global economic meltdown in the late 20's also helped usher in the era of facism in Europe. Good job laise faire economic theory.

If you read the article I posted it mentions the changing population and how the system deals with recent Muslim immigrants I believe. So what you are saying is that any state in the US should not look to another for policies and practices that actually work? I understand there is not a one size fits all approach to the problem however, being dismissive off hand and engaging in ridiculous stereotyping seems counter productive. Actually one could say that that approach is the height of right wing luncacy. Anyhow, here's left wing nut job and former George Bush 2 education secretary Diane Ravitch advocating for what sounds a lot like the Finnish approach to education to me.

Our Constitution is very clear and we are not setup for socialism. It will bring the US down.

With all due respect, if you believe in Marxism and Socialism, why don't you move out of the United States where it is promoted elsewhere?

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. What I believe is that the laise faire model of capitalism being thrown around lately has a pretty bad track record so it is a bit surprising that people seem intent on clinging to that failed model. Persoanlly I think a socialist based model for education and healthcare would do this country as a whole a world of good. Socialist principals and Democratic ones are not mutually exclusive. One is a line of economic thought, the other political. For example Germany could be considered a social democratic state. There are also gradations of socialism. Finally there is socialism at play in this country however, it tends to benefit the wealthy and corporations who we allow to hoard wealth, roll the dice vis a vis their investments and then get bailed out when they screw everything up. That is a perfect example of socialized risk. With that in mind asking these members of our society who benifit from this form of socialism to help pay their fair share for world class education and medical systems that benifit all equally seems quite reasonable to me.

If the US is becoming anything it is quickly moving towards being an oligarchy due to the extreme concentration of wealth and therefore power among a select few Americans. Personally I feel this is the biggest threat to the US being a Democratic State. Anyhow, telling someone to esentially "love it or leave it" is pretty lame.

Can anyone think of a system (Communist, Dictatorship, Democratic etc) that hasn't, over time, eventually failed?
