Per II Collinsworth injured his Labrum in the spring game and needed surgery. Most likely will miss the season.

Man, I can't help but worry about the season now... if they can somehow survive this scedule with 9 plus wins... ND may have one hell of a strong class...

fingers crossed they can hold it together

If it was just his labrum he should be fine. It is about a 4-6 month rehab so he will not be around this season.

Per II the Niklas rumors are inaccurate though concussions are a concern.

Something we dind't want to hear. Though this may force Diaco/Kelly to have to bring Neal or another upcoming FROSH to work in the defensive backfield earlier than later. Slaughter is now going to have to be back there at all times now, was hoping Collinsworth was able to step into the roll as one of those "Wolves" on defense.

Didn't really know where to bring this up, so I settled on this thread.

Some buddies and I were emailing back and forth about Collinsworth/Niklas and one of them sent me a message quoting a guy from another site (can't remember which one). Poster says Niklas is being evaluated in CA and will return Sunday to ND. Claims Collinsworth is done for '12 (being widely reported now anyway). Also says Carrico and Roberson's careers are over at ND. I don't take this as mere speculation...but do take it somewhat with a grain of salt.

Anyone else hearing the same about Carrico or CR? I know we've speculated about CR some, but Carrico hasn't been brought up in a while.

Carrico has a foot issue I believe.

Roberson had a non-contact multiligament tear in his knee in the spring of 2011. Hasn't stepped on the field since.

Didn't know that....would never think that given the severity of the injury to his career.

Feel bad for these guys, haven't seen much field time and their career is done.

Hey though the good thing for these guys, their going to graduate with a degree at ND. That's what these HS players need to learn from, if you get hurt at the first practice and never play again, what school would you want to be at to get a degree. Tough luck for these two.

Carrico had bones in his ankle rubbing together amongest other stuff happ in his ankle. Its a wait and see for him. Its a 12 week recovery from the surgery he had where no pressure can be applied to the ankle

When was the surgery? Hasn't this (or an injury of some sorts) been kind of an ongoing thing for him?

For some reason I thought Carrico went to twitter saying his surgery went according to plan.

Here it is.

Brad Carrico ‏ @BradCarrico56

out of surgery aand everything went well! feeling good right now too lol thanks to everyone who said a prayer for me!

TP followed up with a diagnosis:

Brads career is suspect at best right now. He had a tendon growing between the bones in his foot which made it very hard to just walk let alone run/play ball on it, bones grinding together so cant imagine it was a good feeling lol. He was held out of contact all spring and just was an extra body while they debated on whether he got the surgery. Hopefully he is able to comeback bc he provides depth and just a big *** body we can throw in there.

Seems like we are talking about the same thing we did at the beginning of last month.

Even with this rash of terrible injury "luck" [have you guys noticed that the term "luck of the Irish" is becoming a nightmarish joke?], the team should still be strongly intact this year. Koyack is not just potentially ready, he IS ready. Kelly sees no problems with his pass route running and catching, and felt that the blocking was getting there on schedule. Welch too can play, and may even be a better "natural" blocker. We have three really good TEs, where most teams have one at most. The loss of Niklas [if true] is horrible, but it's mainly horrible for him and future years, not now.

Carrico is a great guy, first recruit in our class in his year and an early enrollee; but he was not on the two-deep and might well not have been even if healthy. O-Line coaches rarely play more than starting fives and maybe three subs. We are completely intact there. Cam Roberson is in a very similar situation, as we know. RB/Slot is loaded this year, and if we need a banger, Will Mahone can probably do it, if GAIII can't hit the line quite that hard.

The deal is Collinsworth. That involves all of a]. nickel; b]. slaughter-hybrid defense; and c] kick coverage, where he's one of our best if not THE best. I don't know if he's replaceable without significant loss in all of these, but we do have a load of great safety talent now. If Diaco doesn't want to go with McCarthy, then there's Hardy, Baratti [who really thinks he's going to play some nickel/dime this year], and Shumate. And, despite others inventing hypotheticals about Chris Badger, I would NEVER count that slobberknocker out. I do not know John Turner's abilities well enough to comment there, but it seems that plenty of people are available for the fly-to-the-ball coverage teams [at a minimum], and that two of Baratti, Shumate, Hardy, Badger, and McCarthy can do the rest. I've wanted to see excuses to get Shumate, Baratti, and Badger on the field anyway [though not at the expense of Collinsworth.]

The injuries will not sink the ship in 2012. Bad QBing might, but we've got the rest of it pretty well covered. Praise good recruiting and roster management!!

p.s. I really want a defensive tackle.... I think that we NEED another inside big. Sherit will be a welcome Godsend, but we need a roothog too. [ Yes, Kelly can "adjust" with his magical roster management, but it would be nice not to have to make chicken soup out of chicken sh!t].

Sucks about Collinsworth, as he's a tough ballplayer on special teams and we need all the DB depth we can get. But - speaking from personal experience and taking the long view - a torn labrum is a very recoverable injury. Surgery would mean he's out most if not all of '12, but he should be fine by spring ball.

Hopefully Niklas is just being cautious. He's an NFL talent.

I can still remember following carricos hs tape and being so happy when he committed. Then watching him start at guard in the 2011 blue gold game, I had visions of him becoming a mike iupati road grader for us. I really hope this gifted athlete comes back with a vengence.

No doubt, the idea of Niklas not playing makes me feel sick. That kid is a star if I ever saw one for sure! Really hoping he can get through this!

Back to 2013... Here is my wish list. 14 committs, 22-25 spots. We need at least 1 RB, 2 LBs, 2 DL, and 1 more DB. I think we are doing great everywhere except for S, WR, and DT. I don't get the DT situation, but what do I know!

1) QB: Zaire
2) RB1: __________ (Clement/Williams) (traditional thick-legged back)
3) RB2: __________ (Green/Edwards) (speed back or ATH)
4) WR1: Robinson (boundary)
5) WR2: ________ (the GA Robinson) (boundary)
6) WR3: Onwualu (slot)
7) TE1: Heuermen
8) TE2: __________ (Mattingly/Anzalone/Matsuka) (BIG SKILL)
9) OT1: Elmer
10) OT2: McGlinchey
11) OT3: McGovern
12) OG1: Montelus
13) OG2: Bivin

14) WILL: Smith (I know...)
15) CAT: _____________ (Muhamed) (This is the kid that will turn this class from very good to great)
16) DOG: ___________ (Mattingly/Anzalone) (BIG SKILL)
17) LB4: ____________ (Randolph/Cox)
18) DE1: Rochell
19) DE2: ____________ (Ogundeko) (OLB/DE- the we'll see slot)
20) DE3: Matsuka (BIG SKILL)
21) DT: __________ (Sherit/????)
22) CB1: Kinlaw (our most underrated committ)
23) CB2: Butler
24) CB3: __________ (Luke/???)
25) S: ___________ (Redfield/????) (DB/ATH)
