I'm starting to think MLB teams should require Tommy John surgery for pitchers after their first year. Seems it's inevitable, so you might as well get it over with!

Yankees call up Thairo Estrada to replace Troy Tulowitzki
By Dan Martin New York Post April 3, 2019 | 9:58pm

Thairo Estrada is getting his chance in the majors much sooner than anyone could have anticipated.

The 23-year-old infielder, who was shot during a robbery attempt in his native Venezuela in January 2018 and then bothered by nagging injuries upon his return last season, will be called up Thursday when the Yankees face Baltimore. He’ll replace Troy Tulowitzki, who left Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to the Tigers with a low-grade left calf strain, a source confirmed.

Estrada was due to start the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when it opens its season on Thursday, but since he was the only available infielder remaining on the team’s 40-man roster, Estrada became the logical choice to be recalled.

He was limited to 18 games last season, split between Single-A Tampa and SWB, and also played in the Arizona Fall League.

But with Tulowitzki headed for the injured list and the Yankees already without Miguel Andujar and Didi Gregorius among the 11 players on the IL, they were left with little choice but to go with Estrada.

Troy Tulowitzki likely headed to IL as Yankees’ injury woes grow
By Greg Joyce April 3, 2019 | 5:17pm | Updated

It had been more than 24 hours since their latest injury, so perhaps the Yankees were playing on borrowed time.

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki became the latest to join the walking wounded, exiting Wednesday’s series finale against the Tigers after three innings with a low-grade left calf strain. He was sent to New York- Presbyterian hospital for further testing.

“That will almost certainly be an IL [scenario], but I haven’t talked through it all yet,” manager Aaron Boone said.

It was unclear when Tulowtizki suffered the injury. Tyler Wade, who entered the game for him at second base with Gleyber Torres sliding over to shortstop, said Tulowitzki came up to him after popping out to end the second inning and told him, “Get loose.”

The Yankees signed the 34-year-old Tulowitzki in January to fill the gap at shortstop until Didi Gregorius returned from Tommy John surgery. The five-time All-Star sat out all of 2018 after having surgery on both of his heels and missed more than half the season in 2017 with ankle and hamstring injuries.

Tulowitzki made it through spring training healthy but lasted only five regular-season games before his lower-body injury woes came back. In the limited sample size, he went 2-for-11 with a home run, four strikeouts and two walks.

With Tulowitzki sidelined, Torres may be headed back to his natural position for the foreseeable future. The 22-year-old came up through the minors as a shortstop but has made 108 of his 125 career major league starts at second base. Gregorius, meanwhile, is not due back until at least June.

“It’s crazy, but I think it’s part of the game,” Torres said of the mounting injuries. “… I feel really comfortable in both positions. Before the game, I prepare really well for if I play second or short. Just try to do my job and help my team.”

Before Wednesday, the Yankees already had a crowded injured list with 10 players, including Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Andujar, Aaron Hicks, Gregorius, Luis Severino, CC Sabathia and Dellin Betances.

“It sucks. It’s a tough one,” Aaron Judge said. “But any adversity like this makes a team stronger. This is getting a lot of guys some valuable playing time. It’s going to help us out. In spring training, when we had all those guys in there, we told everybody, ‘Hey, everybody’s going to make an impact on this team somehow. … Just stay ready and help us win some ballgames.’”

Wade was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Monday when Andujar went on the IL with a small labrum tear, but now the Yankees’ infield depth may get tested even more. They currently have five healthy infielders on their 25-man roster, though two, Luke Voit and Greg Bird, have only ever started at first base in their major league careers. Bird has been taking ground balls at third base recently in case of emergency, which might be inching closer.

The only other healthy infielder on the Yankees’ 40-man roster is Thairo Estrada, a 22-year-old who was set to open the season at Triple-A Thursday.

“He’s a guy that we feel like is going to be a good player,” said Boone, who added they had not yet talked about a potential call-up. “He has made a lot of strides and looked really good in the spring.”

Yankees close ugly homestand with strikeout-fest loss to Tigers
By Dan Martin April 3, 2019 | 6:56pm

The Yankees opened the season with a pair of series against teams that figured to be among the worst in the majors.

Six games into 2019, and it’s actually the Yankees who look like the dregs of the league.

They lost again Wednesday to the Tigers, 2-1, to close out a nightmarish homestand in which they dropped four of six to Baltimore and Detroit and lost seemingly half their roster to injuries.

...

On Wednesday, the Yankees set a franchise record by striking out 18 times, their most ever in a nine-inning game, and Troy Tulowitzki become the latest — and perhaps least surprising — player to go down.

hopefully these injuries give the younger backups some valuable playing time so when their number is called later in the pennant race, they can answer the call

Scranton Yankees Take 2 of 3 from TB

Scranton Yankees Take 2 of 3 from TB

Tanaka with best form of the season, 73 pitches over 7 innings, 1 ER, 5 hits, 7 Ks for the win.

RBI's by Gardner, LeMahieu, Urshela, Tauchman, and Estrada.

I recognize the first name as a Yankee but the rest? Didn't Estrada ride a Kawasaki on CHIPS?

#7, 8, and 9 hitters went 5-12!

Over the first 40 games of the season the Scranton Yankees have only 4 fewer wins than then last year's Bronx Bombers.

Urshela had a 2 run double, leads the club with .341 BA. He's played 4 more games that Judge this season and has 4 more RBIs, 15 vs 11.

Hicks scheduled to return Monday, went 3-18 in 5 minor league rehab at bats. Is he ready for the MLB pitching? Andujar doesn't seem to be.

Four reasons why the first-place Yankees are the best story in baseball this season
The Yankees took over sole possession of first place in the American League East on Friday
R.J. Anderson
mugshot by R.J. Anderson

The New York Yankees won their fourth game in a row on Friday, edging out the Tampa Bay Rays to gain sole possession of first place in the American League East for the first time since Opening Day. Calling the Yankees baseball's best story would normally qualify as big-market pandering. This year's group is different, however. The Yankees have found their way to the catbird seat despite losing nearly 100 more days to injury than any other team -- a predicament that has forced them to replace multiple headliners in their lineup with afterthoughts.

Just how have the Yankees weathered an injury cloudburst en route to first place? Let's explain.

1. Good pitching
Entering the spring, the Yankees appeared well-positioned to field an above-average pitching staff -- especially after a winter that saw Brian Cashman invest in James Paxton, J.A. Happ, Adam Ottavino, and Zack Britton. The Yankees have lived up to those forecasts.

Coming into Saturday, the Yankees had the seventh-best staff ERA in the game. Additionally, New York was tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the most pitchers (12) with 10-plus innings and an ERA+ of 100 or better. That's enough to fill out a pitching staff with.

The rotation has been led by four pitchers in particular: the aforementioned Paxton (out injured), Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, and Domingo German -- who opened the season in the rotation only because ace Luis Severino was hurt. Veteran southpaw J.A. Happ, for his part, has been able to keep runs off the board despite being too prone to the long ball. Remember, this is a group without its best pitcher. Yet heretofore they've been among the game's best starting fives.

The bullpen wouldn't seem as impressive given Yankees relievers as a unit have a below-average ERA. Look a little closer, though, and it becomes apparent that their standing can be blamed on non-essential contributors. Of their top-seven most used arms, only one (Chad Green) has an ERA+ below 100; four of the seven have an ERA+ over 150, including Tommy Kahnle, Ottavino, and Aroldis Chapman. As with the rotation, the Yankees bullpen is functioning without one of its top talents: Dellin Betances has so far missed the season.

2. Unexpected offensive contributions
If you had told someone in March the Yankees would rank outside the top-10 in adjusted weighted runs created -- and it would seem like a victory … well, you would've heard a thing or two about what would be what if the Boss were still alive. Seeing as how the Yankees have received nearly as many plate appearances from Austin Romine as they have Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar combined, we think it's fair to say their tie for 12th place is a win.

The Yankees have fielded an above-average offense due in part to the hot-hitting ways of the usual suspects, like Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge (when healthy), and Gleyber Torres and free-agent addition DJ LeMahieu. But their top performers also include the likes of Gio Urshela, Luke Voit, and Cameron Maybin, as well as Clint Frazier and Thairo Estrada (in a smaller sample). Even Kendrys Morales has pitched in during his brief time with New York.

Those are not the players who were supposed to be pivotal to the Yankees' attack. Heck, some of them would've seemed unworthy of donning the pinstripes entering the season. The absences of Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, as well as a few other key contributors -- Aaron Hicks, Andujar, and Didi Gregorius -- have caused the Yankees to dig deep in order to field nine every night. Somehow, those efforts have worked out much better than expected.

3. A fortunate schedule
Hey, if you're telling the story about how the Yankees are in first place, you have to tell the whole story. That includes noting that they've played one of the easiest schedules to date.

You can only play the schedule you're given and so and so forth, but the Yankees have played 14 games (out of 43) against teams with records of .500 or better. To be fair, the Rays have played an equally light schedule, per Baseball-Reference's strength of schedule metric, with 16 games against winning teams in 42 total contests. Both the Yankees and Rays are .500 in games against teams with winning records, so it's not making a difference in the division race.

4. Beating who they should
If you have eyes on contending, you better take advantage of the easy portions of your schedule. The Yankees have done that, winning 20 of 29 games against teams with a losing record. Their .689 winning percentage in those games puts them eighth in the majors, alongside the Rays, Minnesota Twins, and Houston Astros -- or, the other top AL clubs this season.

The Yankees probably would've been fine with that standing before all the injuries happened. Considering who they're playing without, you can see then why they have a strong case for being recognized as the best story in baseball.

Rays Retake East Lead With 2-1 Win

Tanaka once again outbattled Snell throwing 6 scoreless innings with 6 Ks. Snell only gave up one run on a wild pitch.

Kahnle gave up an HR on his second pitch. Cessna gave up the game winning HR in the 11th.

Urshela was 2-4, .353 while Hicks finally showed some signs of life at the plate going 2-4 bringing his BA all the way to .154.

Injury Updates
Gregorius is to play Monday in his first extended spring training game since Tommy John surgery on Oct. 17 and is projected to rejoin New York in June

Paxton (left knee inflammation) is to throw a third bullpen session Sunday and could be activated during next week's trip.

Stanton (left biceps, shoulder) is to start an injury rehab assignment for Class A Tampa on Monday night.

Scranton Retakes American League East Lead

Yanks turned an early slugfest into a laughter breaking 5-5 tie with a 7 run 8th. A collection of hits, a couple of RBI walks, and a pinch hit bases clearing double by Estrada, .311, pitch hitting for Urshela, team leading .348 BA broke it open. LeMathieu, Gardner, and Hicks homered. After a horrible day at the plate yesterday, Sanchez had 2 hits including a triple. Octavio got the win facing 2 batters, a BB and a K.
