Boone's playing with the rotation starting The Bullpen, Holder, Tarpley, Gray, Green, Robertson, Chapman, Betances, and Britton. Gray pitched two innings allowing both hits and the one ER for Tampa and got the Win, 11-9. The others pitched an inning apiece with 4 of them, Green, Robertson, Chapman, and Betances getting a Hold, and Britton getting Save #7.

McCutheon HR. Judge has a pair of walks and an RBI double.

Hicks started but left the game due to tightened hamstring.

That's 17 passed balls for Gary Sanchez, one more than he had last season. But he's played roughly 275 fewer innings in 2018.

Sanchez continues to struggle at the plate as well. He went 0-4 tonight. Now hitting .180, 20 points below the Mendoza Line. Sanchez On Base % is .280, Slugging .380, and OPS .666.

Yankees are scrambling to justify their Gary Sanchez confidence
By Dan Martin September 25, 2018 | 12:42am

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Gary Sanchez started his 17th game behind the plate Monday night since coming back from his second stint on the disabled list with a strained groin. And after committing two more passed balls in the Yankees’ 4-1 win over the Rays, he’s now up to seven during that stretch.

And on the season, despite having caught only 72 games, Sanchez has four more passed balls than anyone else in the majors.

“We were talking in the ninth [inning] and it felt like he did so many good things behind the plate tonight, but there were a few bumps there that we’ve got to continue to work on and clean up,’’ Aaron Boone said. “And it kind of overshadows some of the really good things he did tonight from a receiving and game-calling standpoint.’’

To Boone’s point, Dellin Betances noted that Sanchez had to catch eight different pitchers as the Yankees utilized a bullpen day — to great effect — against the team that invented the strategy.

“He has an idea of what a hitter is trying to do throughout a game when it comes to calling pitches,’’ said Betances, who tossed a scoreless eighth inning in the victory. “He tries really hard at framing pitches to get more called strikes. Maybe at times that might hurt him.”

Sanchez’s first mistake came in the fourth with Sonny Gray on the mound. After a Tommy Pham double to lead off the inning, Sanchez’s passed ball sent Pham to third, and Pham later scored on a double play.

He committed his second passed ball in the sixth, as Matt Duffy took second, helping to set up an inning in which Brett Gardner saved the Yankees’ lead with a spectacular catch of Brandon Lowe’s fly ball to deep center.

“We’ve got to keep leaning into him,’’ Boone said. “We know he’s working his butt off at it.”

Boone left no doubt over the weekend that Sanchez would be the starting catcher in the wild card-game and GM Brian Cashman also gave Sanchez a vote of confidence.

Still, it’s no better on the offensive side, as Sanchez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He left runners in scoring position three times and is 1-for-23 with five walks and a dozen strikeouts in his last eight games.

Despite the prolonged struggles, Betances expressed confidence in his batterymate.

“He’s done hell of a job,’’ Betances said. “He’s got a lot of guys doing different stuff. Some of those breaking pitches are not easy to catch and you’ve got [Zach] Britton throwing those Bugs Bunny pitches. Gary’s trying. I don’t even worry about it when I’m out there. It’s not something that crosses my mind even a little bit."

Yankees' CC Sabathia may have lost out on a $500K bonus on a retaliatory pitch, ejection
Sabathia was two innings shy of triggering a bonus

Matt Snyder Sep 27, 2018

The Yankees were in the process of utterly crushing the Rays on Thursday afternoon when there were some fireworks. The real-time tweets were funny:

Marc Carig

@MarcCarig
Holy cow. CC smoked Sucre and cost himself a half million dollars, got ejected from the game, then appeared to grab his crotch while facing the Rays dugout.

Jack Curry

@JackCurryYES
By hitting Sucre and getting tossed, Sabathia cost himself potential $500,000 incentive bonus (he was 2 innings short). But CC, who is already a leader in the clubhouse, just showed why his teammates love him. That’s a teammate backing up a teammate.

Coley Harvey

@ColeyHarvey
CC Sabathia to the Rays' dugout: "That's for you, (insert Too $hort's favorite word)."

Minor quibble: I'd have gone with "Jesse Pinkman's favorite word," but that's a matter of taste.

Holy smokes, though! Sabathia was two innings away from a $500,000 bonus and did this:

FOX Sports Florida

@FOXSportsFL
An 11-0 margin in the final game between the @RaysBaseball and the Yankees this season. Sure, go ahead and intentionally hit a person. Today's game is live on FOX Sports Sun and FOX Sports Go. #RaysUp

Here's what led to it:

Jake Bauers was hit by a Sabathia pitch on a 1-0 count (in a 7-0 game, mind you) in the bottom of the fifth.
The first pitch in the top of the sixth from Andrew Kittredge was thrown at the head of Yankees catcher Austin Romine.
It's difficult to judge intent, but it certainly seems like Sabathia's pitch that hit Bauers was not intentional and Kittredge's pitch was pretty damn fishy.

Sabathia's long been known as a great teammate and, well, throwing away a half million dollars to get your teammates' back is certainly a story that will back up that reputation, even if he's already made over $250 million in his career.

Yankees clinch home wild-card game with record-tying homers
By George A. King III September 28, 2018

BOSTON — It took a little longer than they possibly would have wanted, but the Yankees’ mission to avoid traveling to Oakland for the AL wild-card game was accomplished Friday night at Fenway Park.

Knowing that a victory over the Red Sox would allow the wild-card game against the A’s to be held in The Bronx on Wednesday evening, the Yankees scored two runs in the third and six in the fourth en route to an 11-6 victory that was witnessed by a sold-out crowd of 36,779.

The Yankees tied the major league record for homers in a season by swatting four. Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks, Luke Voit and Aaron Judge homered to raise the Yankees’ total to 264. That matches the 1997 Mariners for the most in a season with two more games to break it.

J.A. Happ, a very strong candidate to start against the A’s in the loser-go-home game, dominated a lineup full of Red Sox regulars through five innings in which he didn’t allow a run and just one hit. That changed in the sixth when Happ loaded the bases with two outs and watched Steve Pearce drive a grand slam over the Green Monster that cut the hosts’ deficit to 8-4.

Happ, 17-6 overall and 7-0 as a Yankee, won his seventh straight game since being acquired from the Blue Jays on July 26. After winning his first five decisions, he had four no-decisions in his next five outings entering Friday night’s action. In six innings, Happ allowed four runs on four hits while walking two and fanning seven.

The Yankees scored three runs in Happ’s past four starts, so he was due for some support and got plenty of it.

Voit’s 14th homer of the year and 13th with the Yankees in 38 games was one of two Yankees runs scored in the seventh, when the visitors upped the lead to 10-4. The other run was unearned when Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts allowed Sanchez’s ground ball get under his glove and score Didi Gregorius.

Gregorius and Hicks returned to the lineup after recovering from a torn cartilage in the right wrist and a left hamstring problem, respectively. Gregorius went 1-for-5, and Hicks went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs with his 27th homer.

Dellin Betances took over for Chad Green to start the home eighth and gave up an RBI single to Pearce (five RBIs) and walked Rafael Devers to load the bases. Betances ended the rally there when Eduardo Nunez’s low liner was snagged by second baseman Gleyber Torres.

Miguel Andujar’s one-out double in the fourth was his 73rd extra-base hit. That is third all-time among Yankee rookies: Joe DiMaggio had 88 in 1936 and Judge had 79 last season. Sanchez walked and scored behind Andujar on Torres’ double high off the Green Monster. Singles by Andrew McCutchen and Judge preceded Hicks’ three-run homer to right that made it 8-0.

Sanchez opened the third inning with a towering home run against lefty Brian Johnson that went over the Green Monster for his 18th of the year. Sanchez’s second homer in three games traveled 446 feet.

Johnson struck out Torres and McCutchen before walking Judge. Hicks’ single moved Judge to second and he scored on Giancarlo Stanton’s shattered-bat single to center for a 2-0 lead.

Happ retired the first nine batters before walking MVP candidate Mookie Betts and giving up a single to Andrew Benintendi to start the fourth.

That put runners at the corners for J.D. Martinez, the other Red Sox MVP candidate. Judge raced to the short wall and grabbed Martinez’s foul ball before making contact with the wall and his mid-section.

Happ fanned Bogaerts and stranded two by feeding Pearce a grounder to Gregorius. After escaping his first jam, Happ retired the Red Sox in order in the fifth.

NY beat BoSox 8-5 winning their 100th game and setting a new MLB Team Record with 266 homers, two more than '97 Mariners. Stanton and Gleyber hit the HRs. Stanton got RBI #100. Lynne got win #10.

Miguel Andujar hit two doubles and increased his total to 46, the most by a Yankees rookie since Joe DiMaggio hit 44 in 1936.

Athletics vs. Yankees: The biggest reason New York's pitching staff matches up well against the A's lineup
The A's have had trouble hitting premium velocity all season
Mike Axisa 1h ago

...
As good as the A's were this season -- and they were very, very good -- they were the worst team in baseball against high-end velocity. Their offensive numbers against 95-plus mph fastballs were not good:

HTML:
................................ ATHLETICS	MLB AVERAGE	MLB RANK
Batting average .187 .241 30th
Slugging percentage .279 .377 30th
Weighted on-base average (wOBA) .262 .309 30th

No team in baseball has less success against premium velocity in 2018 than the A's. They didn't hit for average against big velocity and they didn't hit for power against big velocity either. The Yankees had a difficult decision to make regarding their Wild Card Game starter, and Oakland's issues with big velocity no doubt played a role in their decision to do with Severino.

...

Severino's fastball averaged 97.9 mph during the regular season, the highest in baseball among the 57 pitchers with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. His slowest average fastball in a start this year was 96.9 mph. Furthermore, the Yankees' bullpen averaged 95.6 mph with their fastballs, collectively. Consider some of the bullpen arms they'll throw at the A's in the Wild Card Game:

  • Dellin Betances: 97.9 mph average fastball (10th highest among all relievers)
  • Aroldis Chapman: 99.1 mph average fastball (3rd highest among all relievers)
  • Chad Green: 96.5 mph average fastball (26th highest among all relievers)

That list does not include Zach Britton, who threw only 40 2/3 innings this season after returning from an Achilles injury. He did not have a normal spring training and has been gradually regaining velocity on his trademark sinker as he's gotten further away from the injury.

Britton's Average Sinker Velocity has risen from around 93.5 mph about 40 games ago to 95.25 mph now.

Yes, no.

There are a few Halo Honks on here, maybe you’re confusing me for one of them... my living room makes most think I’m a Yankee fan... chalks of DiMaggio, Gehrig and Mantle. Angels fan but also have love for a few other teams, Cards, Padres, Yanks, Brewers... always find myself rooting for those teams too.

Where is that poster that kept pestering us Yankee fans that we would be better off facing the Astros in the wildcard instead of the streaking hot A’s? And we kept telling him over and over and over again that we would rather stay away from Verlander and Keuchel and the Astros and face Oakland. Where is that guy now?

Was hoping Game 2 would get the 4pm spot on Saturday - not the case though. Looks like I'll need to get the second TV ready for Saturday night.

Happ is 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA in four starts against Boston this season (six of the 11 runs against him were unearned) and was 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA in four outings last season. He is 8-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 21 games -- 20 starts -- lifetime against the Red Sox, 5-2 with a 3.27 ERA in 10 games -- nine starts -- at Fenway Park.

He is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 postseason games -- three starts -- and was pitching in relief when he was on the champion Philadelphia Phillies in 2008.

Sale beat the Yankees twice this season, allowing just one run and striking out 19 in 13 innings. But both outings came before July.

Sale is 6-4 with a 1.61 ERA in 17 games -- 14 starts -- lifetime against the Yankees.
