Needed the Mercy Rule!

16-1 All RedSox!

Sevy got smacked for a bunch of singles that the Sox bunched together. Lynne relieved Sevy with the bags full and walked in a run on 4 pitches. It got worse. Sox scored 7. Then continued to hit whoever took the mound for NY. Six Yankee pitchers, two gave up 1 run, 1 gave up 2 runs, Lynne and Tarpley gave up 3 each, and Sevy got charged for 6.

Meanwhile Yankee bats went to sleep. Eovaldi gave up 5 singles through 7. Hembree and Rodriguez out of the much maligned BoSox bullpen allowed 1 BB and NO hits.

Sox dominated.

All this will probably take a few mill off his contract for next season. I am guessing he was on track for a 30mill contract 4 months ago.

Look at the bright side. Yankees bats went to sleep at the best time. No way they crank out 16 runs so they might as well save them for the next game!

Drama In The Bronx

Drama In The Bronx

Boston was better again on the mound and at the plate through 8-1/2. Porcello allowed one run on 4 hits through 5 innings. The maligned BoSox pullpen, Barnes, Brazier, and Sale, was again strong until the bottom of the 9th.

Down 4-1, Judge opened with a 4 pitch BB from Kimbrel, Gregorius singled on a 1-2 pitch, Stanton whiffed on 3 pitches, then Voit walked on 4 pitches to load the bases. Kimbrel than hit Walker with a 0-2 pitch to bring in a run. Kimbrel put the first 2 pitches past a swingin Sanchez for an 0-2 count. A ball, a foul, and 2 more balls turned the count full with the bases full. On the 8th pitch Sanchez hit one to deep left ... but not deep enough, a potential grand slam was merely a Sacrifice fly bring in a run but out number 2. Gleyber took a ball and a strike before a swing and a miss. On the 1-2 pitch, Torres hit a slow roller off the end of his ball between 3rd and short. Nunez charged the ball and fired to first. The throw was too the 2nd base side and Pearce made a BIG stretch going horizontal to make the catch while keeping a foot on the bag just before Torres foot hit the bag.

NY too little, too late.

Boston advances!

Champagne time in the BoSox locker room ... in Yankee Stadium.

Great year Boston. Better pitching and timely hitting.

Congrats DONTH8 and the other BoSox fan on IE.

Luis Severino was tipping his pitches against Red Sox in 16-1 loss, report says | MLB | Sporting News

Saw this article. In college, if you weren't trying to figure stuff out like this during a game our coach would chew you out afterwards. So I got pretty good at it. However, I have no idea what Sev was doing, and usually it's easier to pick up on TV. Would explain why the last 2 months his ERA sky-rocketed. Give him an offseason to figure it out and he should be the same as he was at the beginning when he was in the Cy Young discussion.

Where is that poster that kept pestering us Yankee fans that we would be better off facing the Astros in the wildcard instead of the streaking hot A’s? And we kept telling him over and over and over again that we would rather stay away from Verlander and Keuchel and the Astros and face Oakland. Where is that guy now?

Alright, first of all, suck a dick...Sherm. Guess it really didn't matter now, right?

Sev, in my opinion, needs to throw the ball as far as he can as much as possible...and then thrown some more. Throw, throw, throw...long, long, long...if he puts in the work, he'll be just fine.

My guess ,however, he'll drink, drink, drink...and spend money...which is perfectly fine with me. I'm just sayin'...

Cheer up Sherm. :) I haven't went anywhere...

This team is very good- like it in al regards except they need a catcher. Try to keep Sanchez as backup to a good defensive pitch calling catcher and let him move around filling in at different spots like Gaddis in Houston-use his bat- he can hit but the pitching staff would blossom under a better defensive catcher-I like this team.

MLB hot stove: The starters who make the most sense for the Yankees this offseason
New York's most glaring offseason need is starting pitching, but who is the best fit?

Katherine Acquavella 10h ago

Even after signing CC Sabathia to a one-year deal, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that the Yankees still intend to add "multiple" starting pitchers at last week's general managers' meetings. It's really not a surprise that the Yankees are targeting pitching this offseason since additional starting pitchers are a necessity in the Bronx for the 2019 season.

Here's a look at some of the best free agent starting pitchers and why they'd be a good fit for the Yankees:

Patrick Corbin

The Yankees need more left-handed starters, and Corbin would be a solid one to pursue this offseason. The Yankees tried to acquire Corbin last offseason, so there is clearly a high-level of interest for the southpaw. And the interest appears to be mutual as Corbin, a New York native, told USA Today in April that "it would definitely be great to play there. My whole family are Yankees fans." He would be a worthy investment for the Yankees, especially since Corbin will most likely be looking for a multiyear deal. Corbin, at 29, is coming off an All-Star season in which he threw 200 innings with a 3.15 ERA. He will likely be the highest paid left-handed in this year's free agent class, but Corbin would be worth spending for since the Yankees would be gaining a relatively young and reliable starter.

Dallas Keuchel

Despite a slow start to the 2018 season, Dallas Keuchel recorded a 3.48 ERA over his final 21 outings. The Yankees are already familiar with Keuchel — he silenced the Bronx Bombers in the 2015 American League Wild Card game — the same year he won his first Cy Young award. Keuchel's career regular-season ERA at Yankee Stadium is 2.45 in 33 innings pitched. He will be 31 in 2019, and while he's not a big power guy, Keuchel relies on late movement on both his two-seam fastball and his change-up to quiet batters. He'd have to lose the beard, but the the lefty would make a nice upgrade to the Yankees' rotation.

J.A. Happ

The Yankees and J.A. Happ are a really great match. Happ was a fantastic pickup for New York in July, going 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA through his 63 2/3 regular-season innings with the Yankees. He added reliability and stability to a shaky Yankees' starting rotation. Happ told MLB Network that a potential return with the Yankees next season is exciting because "they're trying to win every year." The 36-year-old will likely be looking for a two or three-year deal this offseason, and it probably won't come cheap. But he's among the best free agent pitchers available, and the Yankees' rotation would benefit from a few more years with a left-hander who can provide length as a starter.

Carlos Carrasco

With the Cleveland Indians looking to cut payroll this offseason, it's a big possibility that they could end up dealing either Corey Kluber or Carlos Carrasco, and the Yankees reached out to the Indians about both pitchers. But if it ends up that Cleveland isn't willing to part with one of its ace in Kluber, then Carrasco would be a solid No. 2 option for the Yankees. The 31-year-old, who is under contract through the 2020 season at a total cost of $19.5 million, finished the 2018 season with 17 wins, a 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 231 strikeouts in 192 innings.

James Paxton

Paxton is coming off two impressive seasons with the Mariners, posting a 2.98 ERA in 2017 and 3.76 in 2018. He was 11-6 this year in a career-high 28 starts and struck out 208 in 160 1/3 innings. With the Yankees looking to add starters that can go the distance, Paxton is a good fit. The Yankees' starters averaged just 5 1/3 innings in 2018. Paxton lead the American League with two complete games last season. He also pitched at least seven innings 11 times and went into the eighth inning twice. The Yankees have already spoken with Seattle about Paxton, and it's easy to see why he would appeal to the Yankees.

Yankees pull of blockbuster trade, acquire lefty James Paxton from Mariners for Justus Sheffield and two prospects

Consider this the first blockbuster of hot stove season, with the Yankees making a big splash
Matt Snyder 2h ago

The Yankees have acquired left-handed starting pitcher James Paxton from the Mariners, the team announced on Monday. Top pitching prospect Justus Sheffield, outfielder Don Thompson-Williams and right-handed pitcher Erik Swanson were shipped back to the Mariners in the deal

Paxton, 30, is a very talented pitcher with a history of injury issues. Since 2014, Paxton has made 13, 13, 20, 24 and 28 starts, respectively, per season. Last season was close to his first full-time campaign, at least. He pitched to a 3.76 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 208 strikeouts in 160 1/3 innings. He also had two complete games and a shutout, which was a no-hitter.

I don't think we can call Paxton an ace, but the Yankees already have one in Luis Severino. Paxton in Yankee Stadium as a lefty is a good fit here. He joins Masahiro Tanaka to give the Yankees a nice 2-3 punch in the rotation before CC Sabathia steps in as the four. They probably aren't done making moves for the rotation, otherwise Sonny Gray is the fifth starter and that's a marriage that needs to end for everyone involved.

As for the return, Sheffield was ranked in August as the 22nd best prospect in baseball by Baseball Prospectus. In 88 Triple-A innings last season, Sheffield had a 2.56 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 88 innings. He got a cup of coffee in the majors and didn't fare well, but he is 22 years old and it was a 2 2/3 inning sample. If there's a concern here, it's with walks. Sheffield walked 50 in 116 innings across all stops last season.

Thompson-Williams, 23, hit .299/.363/.546 with 17 doubles, 22 homers and 74 RBI in 100 games between two Class-A stops.

Swanson, 25, had a 3.86 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 78 strikeouts in 72 1/3 Triple-A innings last season. MLB.com ranked Swanson as the 22nd best prospect in the Yankees' system prior to this trade.

This looks like a trade that could benefit both sides. The Yankees are obviously in win-now mode and would like to run down the Red Sox. Paxton has big upside, fits the ballpark and fills a current need. He's under team control for two more seasons. The Mariners are likely to start rebuilding and Paxton was one of the pieces that made the most sense in a deal. It looks like a nice return if Sheffield is what many expect him to be, too.

MLB hot stove: Even after James Paxton trade, the Yankees still have a lot of work to do this offseason
The Yankees need another starter and an infielder to replace Didi Gregorius, among other things

Mike Axisa
The first significant trade of the offseason went down Monday night, as the New York Yankees acquired left-hander James Paxton from the Seattle Mariners for three prospects, most notably left-hander Justus Sheffield. MLB.com currently ranks Sheffield as the 31st best prospect in baseball. The Yankees got their starter and the Mariners continued their rebuild.

In a normal offseason, acquiring a pitcher of Paxton's caliber would qualify as "the big move," but this is not a normal offseason for the Yankees. They had a 100-win season in 2018 but it still felt like a disappointment because they were quickly ousted by the rival Boston Red Sox in the ALDS. The Yankees also stayed under the $197 million luxury tax threshold and reset their tax rate.

In theory, the Yankees are motivated to improve their roster after getting shown up by the Red Sox, and, again in theory, they have lots of money to spend after resetting their luxury tax rate. The team denies the former is motivating their offseason moves -- what else are they supposed to say? -- and who really knows whether the latter is true. I do know the Yankees added Paxton though, and that's significant.

"I can't predict what's going to happen as we move forward, other than the fact that we need to fill some needs," said Yankees GM Brian Cashman during a conference call Monday night, following the Paxton trade.

Even after acquiring Paxton and re-signing both Brett Gardner and CC Sabathia, the Yankees still have several roster needs to address, and Cashman made it pretty clear his work is far from done this offseason. Where do the Yankees go from here? Let's break it down.

Add another starter
The Yankees are still pursuing Patrick Corbin even after acquiring James Paxton. USATSI
Yes, the Yankees still want another starting pitcher. Cashman said he wanted to add two high-end starting pitchers after re-signing Sabathia, and Paxton counts as the first. Now he's looking for one more. The team's rotation currently lines up like so:

Luis Severino
James Paxton
Masahiro Tanaka
???
CC Sabathia

The Yankees do still have Sonny Gray on their roster, but he is as good as gone. Gray has struggled in New York and Cashman has made it clear he will be traded at some point. It's not a matter of if he'll be traded, but when.

Anyway, even with Paxton on board, the Yankees remain connected to free agents Patrick Corbin and J.A. Happ, both of whom would slot nicely into that open rotation spot. Cost could be an issue with Corbin -- the Yankees have about $25 million to spend under next year's $206 million luxury tax threshold -- but the interest is real.

Point is, the Yankees want -- and need -- another starting pitcher. Gray didn't work out and Jordan Montgomery is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Others, like Domingo German and Jonathan Loaisiga, fit best as depth arms, not opening day rotation members. And, given their continued interest in Corbin and Happ, the Yankees want a very good starter to fill out their staff, not a back-end innings guy.

Replace Gregorius
The Yankees kicked off their offseason with bad news. Shortstop Didi Gregorius needed Tommy John surgery -- he hurt his elbow at some point during the ALDS, the team acknowledged -- and will miss an undetermined length of time in 2019. He could be back in May, or June, or September. No one is sure yet.

Because of that, the Yankees need to add a middle infielder this offseason. Gleyber Torres can play shortstop or second base, which gives the team more options. They don't have to replace Gregorius with another shortstop. They can get a second baseman and slide Torres over to short. That said, they did ask about Jean Segura during Paxton trade talks:

Jon Morosi

@jonmorosi
Source: #Yankees mentioned #Mariners SS Jean Segura in trade talks before decision was made to focus on Paxton alone. Segura’s inclusion in the deal would have all but eliminated Yankees as possible destination for Manny Machado. @MLB @MLBNetwork

871
5:50 PM - Nov 19, 2018

Segura has become an excellent two-way player and would've been a more than capable fill-in for Gregorius not only in 2019, but beyond given the fact Gregorius will become a free agent next winter. I suppose the Yankees and Mariners could revisit their Segura trade talks later in the offseason.

Of course, the big name free agent shortstop on the market is Manny Machado, whom the Yankees did try to acquire at the trade deadline. Machado would replace Gregorius at shortstop in the interim and then presumably move back to third base once Didi returns, with the defensive deficient Miguel Andujar moving to first base or perhaps the outfield.

The Gregorius injury created an obvious opening for Machado, but Machado is someone you make room for anyway. Gregorius getting hurt didn't increase the likelihood of the Yankees signing Machado. A $300 million decision is never going to be based on another player getting hurt. The Yankees will sign Machado if the price is right. That's all. They won't drop $30 million a year (likely more) on Machado just because Gregorius is hurt.

Aside from Machado, the remaining group of free agent shortstops is highlighted by all glove/no bat types like Jose Iglesias, Adeiny Hechavarria and Freddy Galvis. The crop of free agent second basemen is more appealing. Asdrubal Cabrera, Brian Dozier, Marwin Gonzalez, DJ LeMahieu and Jed Lowrie are all available. The Yankees have some options here. Now they just have to go out and actually get someone.

Bolster the bullpen
The Yankees have to replace free agent reliever David Robertson this offseason. USATSI
The Yankees boast an impressive bullpen even with David Robertson and Zach Britton becoming free agents. Aroldis Chapman is locked into the ninth inning with Dellin Betances, Chad Green and Jonathan Holder setting him up. Not many teams could potentially lose Robertson and Britton and still have a dominant end-game unit like the Yankees.

That said, Cashman & Co. clearly value a deep bullpen. That's why they went out to get Britton despite having Chapman and Betances and Green and Robertson. There is no such thing as too many good relievers and it stands to reason they'll look to replace Robertson and Britton this offseason, or at least one of them.

At the moment, New York's eight-man bullpen looks like this:

Closer: LHP Aroldis Chapman
Setup: RHP Dellin Betances
Middle: RHP Chad Green, RHP Jonathan Holder, RHP Tommy Kahnle, LHP Stephen Tarpley
Long: LHP Luis Cessa, RHP Domingo German
Kahnle struggled last year and Tarpley has nine September call-up innings to his credit. There's room for another high-quality reliever in there, for sure. The Yankees could simply re-sign Robertson or Britton, or pursue one of the many other relievers on the free agent market, like Jeurys Familia, Kelvin Herrera, Andrew Miller and Adam Ottavino.

It's clear the Yankees need another starter and a Gregorius replacement. The bullpen is a sneaky high priority too. Don't be surprised if New York finds a way to bring in two relievers this offseason -- sign one and trade Gray for another? -- to maintain that bullpen depth. Paxton, Tanaka and Sabathia aren't known for pitching deep into games. The bullpen will be a priority.

What about Harper?
Similar to Machado, signing Bryce Harper is a decision that will be made independent of everything else. If the numbers make sense, the Yankees will sign him and figure out the rest later, even if it means playing Harper at first base.

Jon Morosi

@jonmorosi
#Yankees have had internal discussions this offseason about possibility of signing Bryce Harper to play first base, but one source described that scenario as "unrealistic" -- at least, for now. James Paxton just start of Yankees' upgrades
The Yankees traded for James Paxton on Monday. They aren't done upgrading their rotation yet.

The Yankees do have a recent history of late offseason big ticket signings that take them over the luxury tax threshold. Cashman talked owner Hal Steinbrenner into signing Mark Teixeira in December 2008, after the team committed nearly $250 million to Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. He also convinced him to sign Tanaka in January 2014 after committing nearly $300 million to Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann.

I get the sense that, if the Yankees do sign Harper, it'll go down similarly to Teixeira and Tanaka. The Yankees will handle their offseason business (sign another starter, replace Gregorius, add a reliever or two) then make that last-minute decision to swoop in and sign Harper, assuming he's still out there. And he probably will be. Scott Boras historically waits out the market with his top clients. Prince Fielder, Max Scherzer and J.D. Martinez didn't sign until later in the offseason, remember.

Machado seems to be the priority over Harper because he fits the roster better as a Gregorius replacement and someone who could push Andujar to less defensively demanding position. The Yankees already have a full outfield and would have to push someone, possibly Harper, to first base to make Harper work with the roster. That's a minor detail though. Harper and Machado are elite talents and if the numbers work for the Yankees, they'll pounce ... eventually.

The Yankees have been one of the most active teams early this offseason. They re-signed Gardner and Sabathia in recent weeks and hauled in Paxton this week. There's still plenty more to do though. The Yankees still need one more starting pitcher, they have to address their middle infield in the wake of the Gregorius injury and they're going to do something to bolster the bullpen. Maybe multiple somethings. The Yankees have been busy already and there's no reason to think they're going to slow down.

Yankees pay CC Sabathia $500K bonus he missed after getting ejected in final start of 2018
Sabathia was just two innings short of a performance bonus

Kevin Skiver 12h ago

CC Sabathia was ejected from his final start of the regular season needing just two innings to reach 155, a benchmark that would have triggered a $500,000 bonus. As the Yankees were blowing out the Rays, Sabathia took some issue with retaliation against him hitting Jake Bauers in the fifth inning. Rays pitcher Andrew Kittredge responded to the (likely unintentional) hit by throwing at the head of Austin Romine. In the sixth, Sabathia plunked Jesus Sucre and got tossed.

The Yankees recognized Sabathia's sacrifice and, perhaps unsurprisingly, paid out his bonus anyway this week. Real recognize real.

"We thought it was a very nice gesture by the Yankees," Kyle Thousand, Sabathia's agent, said to the Associated Press. "CC was very appreciative and is really excited to come back next year and, hopefully, win a championship."

The Yankees, however, didn't want a lot of attention on the gesture -- perhaps especially since Sabathia's sacrifice was retaliatory, something that MLB is trying to stamp out.

"It was something that we did very private and weren't looking to publicize, and I'll just leave it at that," Brian Cashman, the Yankees GM, said.

Sabathia, who re-signed with New York this offseason, has been with the Yankees since 2009, and no one has ever had any gripes about him as a teammate. After the game, Sabathia simply said, via ESPN: "I don't really make decisions based on money, I guess, I just felt like it was the right thing to do."

You've got to respect the gesture from a veteran. Even for a player with his earnings, $500,000 isn't chump change.

CC Sabathia heeded warning signs, recovering after heart procedure
By George A. King III December 21, 2018

CC Sabathia may have saved his life by reacting quickly to experiencing acid reflux, heartburn and an increased amount of perspiration when riding an exercise bike earlier this month.

Sabathia informed the Yankees’ medical staff of the issues and was examined at New York-Presbyterian Hospital where, following a stress test, it was discovered the 38-year-old pitcher had a blocked artery leading to his heart. On Dec. 11 doctors inserted a stent to open the artery via an angioplasty procedure. Sabathia met with doctors on Friday and was told his prognosis is excellent.

“We are thankful that CC was smart enough to convey his symptoms to our medical staff, and in turn they immediately engaged New York-Presbyterian Hospital, who quickly determined the root cause of what ailed him,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in a statement. “We are also encouraged that the procedure CC underwent was performed as planned. He is such a dynamic person beyond his excellence on the field, and we will proceed with his health at the forefront of our priorities. We will continue to follow the guidance and expertise of the doctors — who have conveyed that CC will report as scheduled to Tampa in February to prepare for the 2019 season.’’

Yankees bring in Troy Tulowitzki with focus still on Machado
By Dan Martin January 2, 2019

The Yankees should know more about where they stand in the Manny Machado sweepstakes within the next week, but in the meantime, they added another free-agent infielder, agreeing to a deal with Troy Tulowitzki, a source confirmed late Tuesday.

The signing of Tulowitzki, who was released by the Blue Jays last month, will not impact the Yankees’ pursuit of Machado. Instead, it’s a no-risk flier on a veteran infielder to whom they will owe just the major league minimum, since Toronto is picking up the rest of his $20 million salary this season.

Tulowitzki could fill in at shortstop in the absence of Didi Gregorius, who is out for much of 2019 following offseason Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. That would allow Gleyber Torres to stay at second base, with Miguel Andujar at third.

If the Yankees do end up landing Machado, Tulowitzki might serve as depth, perhaps in a role similar to the one Neil Walker served last season.

A five-time All-Star who turned 34 in October, Tulowitzki’s career has been sidetracked in recent years by injuries and he was a huge disappointment with the Blue Jays.

He didn’t play at all last season due to bone spurs in his heels. In 2017, he was limited to just 66 games because of a sprained ankle and a hamstring injury.

The health woes led Toronto, somewhat stunningly, to jettison Tulowitzki last month, despite still owing him $38 million over the next two seasons.
The Yankees were among nearly a dozen teams that scouted Tulowitzki at a workout last month at Long Beach State and their affinity for one another has long been known.

Among the reasons Tulowitzki wore No. 2 is because he was a fan of Derek Jeter. And general manager Brian Cashman has also liked Tulowitzki.

According to a Sports Illustrated story, Cashman had this exchange with Jeter during contentious contract negotiations in 2010:

“Who would you rather have playing shortstop this year than me?” Jeter asked Cashman.

“Do you really want me to answer that?” Cashman said.

When Jeter told him to respond, Cashman mentioned Tulowitzki, who was with the Rockies.

“We’re not paying extra money for popularity,” Cashman said. “We’re paying for performance.”

That version of Tulowitzki is long gone. His last productive year was 2016, when he hit 24 homers and had a .761 OPS with the Blue Jays in 131 games.

“I think he can still play defense,” Tulowitzki’s former manager in Toronto, John Gibbons, told The Post’s George A. King III last month. “Offensively it has gone downhill.’’

If Tulowitzki proves unable to play, though, it will hardly cost the Yankees, given the price tag.

Of far greater importance is the decision Machado figures to make after he visited the Yankees, Phillies and White Sox over the course of four days last month.

The Yankees, according to sources, are unwilling to give the 26-year-old Machado a 10-year, $300 million deal, but there’s no guarantee the shortstop will get an offer that hefty from any team.

Machado and Bryce Harper entered the offseason as the two headliners of what was considered a historic free-agent class, but for a second straight year, the market has moved at a glacial pace, with both players still available, along with other big names such as starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel and relievers Craig Kimbrel, David Robertson and Zach Britton.[/URL]

Yankees' Miguel Andujar reportedly has torn labrum and may undergo season-ending surgery
Andujar sustained the injury to his shoulder while diving into a bag

Third baseman Miguel Andujar became the ninth Yankees player to hit the injured list Monday, and his injured shoulder is reportedly worse than initially feared. Here are the details from Bryan Hoch:

Miguel Andujar has a small labrum tear in his right shoulder. He will be treated conservatively for two weeks, but season-ending surgery is on the table.

Andujar sustained the injury while diving into a bag. As Hoch notes, the club isn't making any snap decisions with regard to surgery, but it's possible Andujar will be lost for the remainder of the season.

That would be a huge loss. The 24-year-old Andujar is coming off a 2018 season in which he racked up 27 home runs and 47 doubles and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting. Given the Yankees' hopes that Andujar could improve defensively, he might have been even better in 2019.

For instance, the SportsLine Projection Model (@SportsLine on Twitter) forecasts Andujar to bat .297/.339/.522 with 22 home runs and 38 doubles over the remainder of the season. Those outputs, if lost, won't be easy to replace.

Yes, the Yankees have infield depth. For the time being, Gleyber Torres will man second, Troy Tulowitzki will pin down short, and DJ LeMahieu will fill in for Andujar at third. LeMahieu makes quality contact with the bat and will presumably be an upgrade defensively over Andujar. This reshuffling, however, thins out the depth elsewhere and raises the onus on Tulowitzki to stay healthy. Didi Gregorius is slated to return from Tommy John surgery at some point in June, but setbacks are possible.

Now consider the Yankees' current pile-up of injuries:

  • Dellin Betances (shoulder inflammation)
  • Jacoby Ellsbury (hip surgery)
  • Didi Gregorius (Tommy John surgery)
  • Ben Heller (Tommy John surgery)
  • Aaron Hicks (back)
  • Jordan Montgomery (Tommy John surgery)
  • Luis Severino (shoulder inflammation)
  • Giancarlo Stanton (biceps)
  • Andujar (shoulder)

That's a great deal of attrition this early in the season, and it's a lot of 2018 value that's absent from the present mix. As for Andujar, the potential loss of such a powerful lineup presence for the rest of the season could be keenly felt in a division like the AL East, in which the reigning-champion Red Sox and upstart Rays have legitimate designs on the flag.

The 2019 season is extremely young at this writing, but already the Yankees are facing serious problems.
