14-1!

1/2 game behind

Gray beats Cleveland 5-2 with a little help from the Native Americans.

Gray has a 3.72 ERA in five starts with Romine this year; his ERA is 15.63 ERA in two games with Sanchez.

The red hot Yankees have won 14 times in 15 games for the first time since 1998

The Yankees are 17-3 since starting the season 6-7

Mike Axisa 4h ago

There is no team in baseball hotter than the New York Yankees right now. It's not close either.

Saturday afternoon, the Yankees rallied in the middle innings to beat the Cleveland Indians (NYY 5, CLE 2) for their 14th win in their last 15 games. No other team has more than nine wins during that span. This is the first 14-1 stretch for the Yankees since their 114-win season in 1998.

James Smyth
@JamesSmyth621

This is the Yankees first 14-1 stretch since June 24-July 12, 1998 and their first with a run differential of at least +58 since July 4-20, 1954 (14-1, +63)

The Yankees won Saturday by taking advantage of mistakes. They scored four runs in the fifth inning after Trevor Bauer opened the door with back-to-back one-out walks to Neil Walker and Miguel Andujar. After Gleyber Torres slapped a single to center -- it was the Yankees' first hit of the game -- Bauer walked No. 8 hitter and backup catcher Austin Romine with the bases loaded to force in a run.

The bases loaded walk to the light-hitting Romine was only Cleveland's third biggest mistake of the inning. After the walk, Francisco Lindor botched a potential inning-ending 6-4-3 double play ball and instead made two errors on the play, allowing two runs to score.

Yikes. Lindor is a legitimate Gold Glove defender and one of the best shortstops in baseball, but that's back-to-back days with a crucial error. Friday night he booted another potential inning-ending 6-4-3 double play ball, setting up Torres for his first career home run, a go-ahead three-run shot. Then Saturday he committed two errors on one play, allowing two runs to score.

Francisco Lindor, with no excuses after three damaging errors in the past two losses: "I'm not helping my team. I cost my team two games. That's unacceptable."
3:32 PM - May 5, 2018

After the Lindor errors, the Yankees scored another run on a sac fly. Ronald Torreyes, who tagged up at second and went to third on the play, slide in safely. Or at least that was the call on the field. Replays showed Torreyes was tagged out before the runner crossed the plate. The tag out should've ended the inning and kept a run off the board. Here's video of the play.

In the dugout, manager Terry Francona and his coaching staff had some communication issues, and they never challenged the safe call. Replays seemed pretty conclusive. Torreyes was tagged out before the run scored. You can never be too sure with instant replay, but it did appear the call would've been overturned had the Indians challenged.

Jordan Bastian
@MLBastian
In 5th, Torreyes advanced from 2B to 3B on a sac fly to Brantley in left. It was a bang-bang play at 3B, and an out might’ve eliminated the Yankees’ fourth run.
Why no challenge from Francona?
3:42 PM - May 5, 2018

The Yankees scored their four runs in the fifth inning with just a single base hit, and that base hit didn't even score a run. Bauer issued three walks in the span of four batters -- none of those three walks went to one of New York's big scary monsters either -- Lindor committed two errors on one play, and the Indians didn't challenge a play that should've been challenged. When you're going good like the Yankees, you get (and capitalize) on gifts like that.

Combine the Indians' mistakes with a solid start from Sonny Gray and dominant bullpen work from Chad Green and David Robertson, and you get yet another Yankees win.

There are three impressive things about New York's 14-1 stretch. First, they've done it in 15 days. The Yankees are in the middle of an 18 games in 18 stretch that ends Monday. It's their longest stretch of consecutive days with a game this season. They've gone 14-1 in their last 15 games with the benefit of an off-day to rest.

Secondly, the Yankees are finding ways to win even when their best players don't play all that well. Giancarlo Stanton has been better of late but has still yet to have that true MVP caliber impact. Consider Saturday's lineup:

  • Aaron Judge and Stanton went a combined 0 for 8 with five strikeouts.
  • Didi Gregorius did not play after getting inadvertently kicked in the head on a play at second base Friday.
  • Gary Sanchez did not play because he's a catcher and it was a day game after a night game.
  • Aroldis Chapman was not available to close because of his recent workload.
All that was going against them Saturday, and the Yankees still managed to beat a very good Indians team.

And third, the Yankees are beating good teams. This 14-1 stretch includes a four-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins, a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels, three wins in four games against the Houston Astros in Minute Maid Park, and now wins in the first two games against the Indians. They're not beating up on a bunch of rebuilding clubs.

The Yankees sat 7 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East at the start of this 14-1 stretch and they are now just 1/2 game back heading into Boston's game Saturday night. The Red Sox started the season 17-2, remember. Literally the best start in franchise history! Their lead is already down to a 1/2 game.

Oh, and by the way, the Yankees and Red Sox open a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. It's early in the season, but that sure feels like an important series for the Red Sox, who have to find a way to stem the tide.

Gardy Party! Yankees rally past Red Sox 9-6 for 17-1 surge
STATS AP 3h ago •

NEW YORK (AP) When it comes to Brett Gardner, first-year Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes in metrics and makeup.

Even as Gardner's batting average dipped under .200, Boone was optimistic. For starters, Gardner's exit velocities and other advanced stats indicated a breakout was coming. Plus, the speedy leadoff man was still getting on base.

It wasn't just the numbers, though.

''He's just a broad-shouldered, tough player,'' Boone said. ''He just has a way of competing in the biggest spots.''

Gardner capped a slump-busting performance with a go-ahead, two-run triple off Craig Kimbrel in the eighth inning, Aaron Judge followed with a homer and New York rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-6 Wednesday night for its 17th victory in 18 games.

Kimbrel entered with two on and one out to face Gardner seeking the first five-out save of his career. Gardner drilled a full-count pitch into left-center, well over the head of center fielder Mookie Betts, who was playing shallow. Neil Walker scored easily from third and rookie Gleyber Torres raced from first and slid past a lunging tag attempted by catcher Christian Vazquez.

''There's just a toughness that he plays the game with,'' Boone said of Gardner. ''Tonight, I was happy to see him break through.''

Judge followed with a line drive to center measured at 117 mph off the bat, his ninth homer of the season. He had three hits, three RBIs and a diving catch in right field as New York won its eighth straight overall and 11th in a row at home.

New York (26-10) broke a tie with Boston for first place in the AL East and has sole possession of the best record in the majors for the first time since July 27, 2012. The Yankees are on a 35-8 tear in the Bronx since Sept. 2, including the postseason, and at 16-5 have the best home record in the majors this year.

Fans at a sold-out Yankee Stadium went wild in the eighth. Judge compared it to the postseason atmosphere last October, and the party spilled over onto River Avenue so loudly it could still be heard back inside the stadium 15 minutes after the game.

''It's May, and it was bedlam,'' Boone said. ''It was fun to be a part of that.''

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his ninth save. J.D. Martinez got a hit off Chapman and ran into the closer trying to round first base. Martinez argued for interference, but the umpires held him at first on a grounder hit inside the bag. Chapman struck out Mitch Moreland to end it.

The 34-year-old Gardner doubled and scored twice earlier in the game after hitting .147 without an extra-base hit over his previous 19 games. Boone predicted before the game that a breakout was imminent, citing internal metrics and an appreciation for Gardner's steady approach.

''The longer you're around and the older you get, the more you realize that you can't get too excited about maybe one or two good games and you can't get too down about one or two bad weeks,'' Gardner said. ''You just have to keep working.''

The Yankees had walk-off wins in three of their previous five home games. This rally came an inning earlier.

Kimbrel replaced Matt Barnes (0-1) after a double by Walker and a one-out walk to Torres. It was the second blown save in four appearances for Kimbrel, who recently became the fastest reliever to 300 career saves.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the team had planned to be aggressive with Kimbrel because he hadn't pitched since Saturday.

''Today was the day we were like, `You know what? He's rested enough and we know they've been coming back against a lot of teams,''' Cora said.

Hanley Ramirez put Boston ahead 6-5 with a two-run homer in the seventh. Ramirez turned on a hanging slider from reliever Chad Green and crushed it deep into the second deck in left field for his fourth homer.

Giancarlo Stanton drove in two with a go-ahead double off Rick Porcello in the third inning a day after hitting a pair of solo homers in a 3-2 Yankees victory. It was the first time Stanton had RBIs in consecutive games this season, and he improved to 10 for 19 with seven RBIs against Boston during his first season in pinstripes.

Moreland and Andrew Benintendi homered as Boston chased Masahiro Tanaka after 5 1/3 innings. Tanaka allowed four runs.

Yankees reliever Jonathan Holder (1-1) cleaned up a mess left by Chasen Shreve in the eighth, getting Benintendi to ground out with the bases loaded.

Porcello allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings - his first time giving up three or more runs this season.

TUNED IN

Tuesday's 3-2 win by the Yankees in the series opener was the highest-rated game on the YES Network since Derek Jeter's home finale in 2014, drawing more than 600,000 total viewers. It was the first time Boston and New York met with the majors' two best records since 2002, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Red Sox: LHP David Price was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome after twice experiencing numbness in his pitching hand this season. Cora called it ''good news compared to anything else.'' Price will throw at Yankee Stadium on Thursday before being re-evaluated.

Yankees: 1B Greg Bird is set to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Class A Tampa as he works back from ankle surgery on March 27. He had been playing in extended spring training.

UP NEXT

Left-handers CC Sabathia and Eduardo Rodriguez face each other in the series finale. The 37-year-old Sabathia has allowed just one earned run in four starts since returning to the Yankees from a brief DL stint. Rodriguez struck out 10 last time out against Texas, but he's also allowed five earned runs in each of his past two outings.

Red Sox broke the Yankees comeback streak yesterday climbing back into a First Place tie.

Tonight the A's clobbered the Bombers 10-5. The Sox apparently like company at the top as they lost to the Jays in 12.

Two nights in a row opposing starting pitchers looked largely untouchable particularly Rodriguiz whiffing 8 and catching 6 of them looking.

Yanks Win In 11!

Yanks Win In 11!

Move 1/2 game up on Boston who lead the Jays 3-0 in the 4th.

Once again NY spotted the opposition to a 4 run lead. Once again they tied it up with a big inning. This time the bullpen held cutting down the potential lead run at the plate in the ninth.

In the 11th a pair of walks sandwiched around a pair of outs set the stage for Walker's game winning single to center. Cole wins in relief.

Prior to tonight’s game, RF Mookie Betts was placed on the 10-day DL (retro to 5/29) with a left abdominal strain. A corresponding move to replace Betts on the roster will be made prior to tomorrow’s game (6/2) in HOU. #RedSox

Another rainout. Lol

NY has played 6 games less than Boston. A healthy Montgomery would be nice to have back for the doubleheaders these rainouts will foster. He's expected back mid to late June.

The Yankees reportedly may boycott ESPN over Sunday Night Baseball scheduling squabble
The Yankees want off "Sunday Night Baseball" for good reason
R.J. Anderson 2h ago

A common criticism of ESPN's baseball coverage holds that the network focuses too much and too often on the New York Yankees. In at least one case, the Yankees seem to agree -- and they might take action to change ESPN's plans.

As it stands, ESPN wants to broadcast the Yankees game against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 8 as part of the network's "Sunday Night Baseball" flagship -- in part to boost ratings for their lead-in programming, the All-Star Game selection show.

The Yankees, however, want no part of that arrangement, as they must fly to Baltimore and play a doubleheader the next day. The two sides, as well as the league and the union are negotiating to reach a compromise. But, if one isn't found, the Yankees could well boycott ESPN's personnel, per Andrew Marchand of the New York Post:

ESPN often asks for TV interviews with players prior to the game and special access. The Yankees would just say no to all requests, a source said, if the July 8 game remains on the "Sunday Night" schedule.

As Marchand notes, boycotting ESPN would require manager Aaron Boone to give the cold shoulder to his old coworkers. It would also mean shunning Alex Rodriguez, who, in addition to serving as an analyst on "Sunday Night Baseball" is an adviser for the Yankees.

It makes sense for all parties involved to reach an agreement, leading ESPN to finding a new game. But if that doesn't happen, there's a real chance the broadcast will have to go on without the Yankees' cooperation.
