CC Sabathia admits to velocity drop by Jeff Lippman CBSSports.com

CC Sabathia can excel despite decreased velocity by Michael Hurcomb CBSSports.com
While Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia is frustrated with his drop in velocity, pitching coach Larry Rothschild is counseling the veteran left-hander not to panic trying to search for a mid-90s fastball that might no longer be a weapon for him.
"For him to try to create velocity, he’s going to get completely out of sync," Rothschild said, per The Star-Ledger. "It’s not going to work. So he’s better off pitching the way he is right now."
Per FanGraphs.com, Sabathia is averaging 89.9 mph on his fastball, which is a big decline from his first season in New York in 2009 (94.1) and his career average (93.6).Rothschild is preaching patience with Sabathia, and both parties are hoping his velocity will increase as the season progresses. While Yankees understand Sabathia might not throw like he once did, they still feel he can excel at a high level.
"He’s comfortable in what he’s doing," Rothschild said. "He’s confident. And he’s going to compete. That’s a big help, going through this."
