CC Sabathia admits to velocity drop by Jeff Lippman CBSSports.com
Yankees starter CC Sabathia, who improved to 3-1 on the year Wednesday with a win over Arizona, has finally come to the reality that he may not be able to throw with the same velocity that he used to, the New York Daily News reported following his outing.

CC Sabathia can excel despite decreased velocity by Michael Hurcomb CBSSports.com
While Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia is frustrated with his drop in velocity, pitching coach Larry Rothschild is counseling the veteran left-hander not to panic trying to search for a mid-90s fastball that might no longer be a weapon for him.
"For him to try to create velocity, he’s going to get completely out of sync," Rothschild said, per The Star-Ledger. "It’s not going to work. So he’s better off pitching the way he is right now."
Per FanGraphs.com, Sabathia is averaging 89.9 mph on his fastball, which is a big decline from his first season in New York in 2009 (94.1) and his career average (93.6).Rothschild is preaching patience with Sabathia, and both parties are hoping his velocity will increase as the season progresses. While Yankees understand Sabathia might not throw like he once did, they still feel he can excel at a high level.
"He’s comfortable in what he’s doing," Rothschild said. "He’s confident. And he’s going to compete. That’s a big help, going through this."

When he took the mound tonight CC was 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA giving up 1 HR in 28 innings.

In the 1st inning he gave up a HR, Single, Triple, and HR.

In the 3rd he gave up another HR.

He's given up 3 HRs,Triple, and a Single against 9 batters. Who needs a fastball?

The Replacements won again tonight and are playing close to .600 ball. Now the Yankees have to get two more replacements.

Cervelli was having a career year until a foul tip broke his wrist during the first inning. He'll be out six weeks or so.

Two innings later Nova walked of the mound complaining of elbow pain. He'll have an MRI.

Nova and Cervelli on DL.

Nova has inflammation in his pitching elbow and is expected to pitch as soon as he returns in 2weeks.

Cervelli had surgery and expected back in 6 weeks.

Phelps will take Nova's spot in the rotation. NY brought up Lefty Vidal Nuno fron Scranton to take Phelps slot as long reliever.

Austin Romine C, was also called up from Scranton.

I love to see the young guys. It is fun to follow them through the organization to MLB. I have been reading about Romine's Defense for years and Phelps has shown glimpses of being a good pitcher.

Phelps gets HS first start of the season Wednesday.

Meanwhile ARod's replacement at 3rd base has joined him on the DL. Youkilis on 15 day DL. NY is getting replacements for the replacements.

Kuroda had another solid game pitching 7 scoreless innings.

The Yanks need to get younger quick or this will be a team of the past.

Yankees hitting .214 as a team against lefties.

They brought up Corban Joseph from Scranton to be a utility infielder as Nix has become the regular 3rd basemen now by default.

Joseph was a 4th rounder in the '08 draft. He was promoted to AAA in mid-season last year hitting .266, 13 HRs in 357 ABs. He was hitting .273 through 22 games this season.

Beat the Rocks while Sox and Birds lost.

Only St Louis has lost fewer games than The Replacements.

Amazing how well the Yanks are doing this year with an old flawed team. I think Cashman is a terrible GM just has a ton of resources to overcome his shortcomings, but somehow keep fielding a solid team, even absent The Boss. Going into this year I thought Boston and New York would be worst teams in AL East, thus far I stand corrected.

The seasons at the 20% mark but I never expected NY or Bos to be doing anywhere near this well. I actually expected with the problems for both their current records to be reversed more like 13-21.

NY has had good pitching so far and just enough hitting. Still a long way to go on thin talent.

Yeah, I agree long way to go, but with a flawed roster even without injuries Ive been pleasantly surprised with the Yanks so far.

Kinda surprised to see the Yanks where they are. If they can hang in there til some of the big guns get health they might be ok.

The Old Men and The Replacements have 2nd best record in MLB. Nobody has lost fewer games.

Pitching has been the strength but that gets tested in the doublerheader with Cleveland, Phelps and Nuno for NY.

Granderson may be the only coming back soon. Current DL updates: Nunez on 15 days and Teixeira on 60.

Granderson's Back!

Granderson's Back!

He went 0-3 but figured in the winning run. NY trailed 3-1 in the 7th. Cano doubled in a pair to tie. Wells was intentionally walked. Then Granderson worked a walk to load the bases. Overbay drove in the lead run. Robertson pitched a scoreless 8th and Rivera did the same in the 9th for Save 16.

Balt & Bos both lost.

NY leads by 2.

Get one off DL and another goes on.

Get one off DL and another goes on.

Dan Knobler CBSsports.com

Friday, the Yankees put Pettitte on the disabled list, with a strained left trapezius muscle that forced him out of his Thursday night start against the Mariners. Vidal Nuno, who was sent to the minor leagues after making a spot start Monday in Cleveland, will return to take Pettitte's spot in the rotation.

The Yankees have overcome an incredible run of injuries and have managed to stay in first place in the American League East. But the Pettitte injury gives them another challenge, because they have had to rely on their starting rotation to help them win, despite a makeshift lineup.

...

While the Yankees have a payroll of more than $200 million, they now have about $97 million of it on the DL. Curtis Granderson returned to the active roster this week, but none of their other DL players are expected back very soon.

Matt Snyder CBSSports.com

The New York Yankees have acquired Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has learned. The Rockies designated Brignac for assignment Thursday, so the return was bound to be minimal. And minimal it is, as Heyman reports the Yankees have sent $75,000 to the Rockies as part of the deal.

Brignac, 27, provides the injury-plagued Yankees with infield depth, as he can play second, third or shortstop. He hit .250/.294/.375 with a homer and six RBI in 53 plate appearances for the Rockies this season.

Brignac is familiar with the AL East, as his previous five big-league seasons all came as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

To make room for Brignac, the Yankees have designated Alberto Gonzalez for assignment.

Nova's got be feeling uneasy on the DL. Phelps had another solid outing beating Toronto allowing one run over 7 innings while striking out 8. He's got 15 Ks while yielding 2 runs over the last 14 innings.

Nova doesn't need to worry about Phelps; he needs to worry about himself. He has been awful since last July.

Granderson got off his broken arm DL stint, got to play a little, and now is on 15 day DL with a broken pinky knuckle. He's expected to be out for a month.

Yankees activate Ivan Nova
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com

The Yankees have activated starter Ivan Nova from the 15-day disabled list, the New York Daily News*reports.
Nova hasn't pitched since April 26 due to a triceps injury. Although the club has not announced anything regarding his role, it's likely he replaces Vidal Nuno as the fifth starter in the rotation. Nova had a 6.48 ERA in four starts prior to the injury.

Meanwhile Nuno had a good game today allowing 2 runs in 6 innings.
