Pettitte and Sabathia To DL

Yanks sweep the Tribe with 5-4 win today but lost Pettitte when he was hit in the left ankle breaking his fibula. He'll be out for 2 months. Earlier in the day Sabathia went on the 15 day DL for a strained groin muscle in his left leg injured on Sunday.

Nova pitches Thursday against the ChiSox.

Garcia expected to move back into the rotation.

Tampa lost and Baltimore is losing 11-1 to the Dodgers in the 6th.

Nova gave up his requisite HR but it was a solo, then he shut the door. 7.1 innings, 1 run on 6 hits. Bullpen gives off a leadoff single in the 9th, fields a sac bunt and throws it away then gives up a 3 run HR for the loss. Good news Balt and TB both lost and nobody else went on the DL.

Jeter almost won it in the bottom of the 9th. Close but no cigar.

Jeter did tie Cal Ripken on the All-Time Hit List at 3,184. Next up Napoleon Lajoie, 58 hits away. Jeter's hitting .304 for the season but only .238 for June. At that pace (25 hits for the month) he won't catch Lajoie until Labor Day. He can still catch Eddie Murray, 13 hits ahead of Lajoie, but it's not looking good to catch Wille Mays for 10th Place on the List. Mays is 100 hits away tonight. At a .238 clip Jeter would need 357 At Bats to make it happen.

Adam Warren up from AAA got the start and struck out the first batter. Walked two in the first but retired the sides with no damage.

In the home first, Jeter doubled (and moved ahead of Ripken on the All-Time Hit List) and Granderson homered. ARod walked, Swishere singled and Jones made it 4-0 with a double.

Warren takes the mound in the 2n and gives up a leadoff HR, back to back singles, followed by a 2 run double. The double turned into a run via two ground outs.

NYC goes down 1-2-3 in the bottom 2nd.

ChiSox 3rd leadoff HR, a single, steal and error advancing to third and scoring on a infield single. After another singel Warren got to take an early shower. 2.1 innings 6 ER on 8 hits, 2 BBs, 1 K on 77 pitches.

Yanks trail in the 4th, 6-4. Phelps pitching for NY.

CC looked strong in his return from the DL last night. Struck out six and scattered 4 hits and a walk over 6 shutout innings.

Andrew Jones 2nd inning 3 run homer proved to be all the runs the Yanks would need last night, and Cano extended his hitting streak to 20 games.


In other good news Joba threw a perfect in a rehab appearance:

Sabathia has won at least 10 games in each of his 12 seasons. Only for players have done that since 1900, Plank, Seaver, Sutton, and ?(I forget the other name I read on the crawler).

Cano hit streak to 20.

Jeter had another multi-hit game.

CC's 186 - 99 with a 3.50 ERA. He's projected to have an 18-5 season with 3.27 ERA.

He'll get to 19...he has reached at least that number every year in pinstipes.

Cano over his 20 game hit streak: .389 BA, .722 SLG, 1.115 OPS, 8 HR, 23 RBI.

How are you guys liking the Yanks WS chances this year? What team do you think poses the biggest threat?

NY had lost of 8 of the last 11 but they were close games not cause for alarm considering the 10 game lead they had.

NY hasn't been up by 5 after an inning and lost since 1918. Until Tuesday night when NY got outyankeed by the O's. Yanks pounded Tillman for 5 runs in the bottom of the first and lead 5-0. O's rocked Nova for 7 in the top of the second and in all scored 11 unanswered runs for the 11-5 win. NY has now lost 9 of 12, 3 in a row to AL East foes. O's cut the lead to 5-1/2.


Jeter had 3 hits, .312, and trails Nap Lajoie by 20 hits. He's had 10 hits in the last week, .345, and hit over .330 for the month of July. Jeter need 62 hits to take over the #10 spot on the All-Time Hit List from Willie Mays. He's got a good shot to do so.

In NY's first 103 games, he's played in 100 getting 131 hits or 1.07 hits per game. He averaged 4.25 At Bats/game so giving up a couple of day off, he's got about 238 At Bats left this season. At a .312 clip he'd get another 74 hits. He's only walked 27 times so allowing for some walks he should get the 62 hits providing he stays healthy . Considering NY's injuries this year, recently ARod to the DL and Texiera out with an injured wrist, he better stay healthy.

NY traded RP Chad Qualls to the Pirates for 3B Casey McGehee to replace ARod at 3B. McGehee is hitting .230/.297/.377 with eight homers, 35 RBI and 13 doubles in 293 plate appearances this season. Less pop than ARod (who has less pop) and about 40 BA points less but he's a body and NY's running short of bodies. NY also brough back Joba Chamberlain Tuesday from his season long ankle injury. Joba fills Qualls slot while McGehee takes ARod's.

Jeter had 2 more hits to close to 14 hits behind Lajoie on the All-Time Hit List as Yanks won 6-2.

Suzuki has 12 game hitting streak as Yankee. 12 games, 12 hits.

NY has only won 6 of last 16 but it seems like Baltimore and Tampa take turns beating each other to keep NY in first.

Nova 10-5 vs Verlander 11-7 tonight, 7:05 Eastern on ESPN.

Jeter had 2 hits and Suzuki a career high 5 RBIs Friday in NY's 10-4 win over Toronto.

Saturday Jeter had 2 more hits in Nova's (11-6) win over the Jays. Nova gave up 5 hits, a walk and struck out 10.

Jeter is hitting .315 for the season, .342 for the past week, and trails Lajoie by 4 hits.

NY increased their AL East lead to 6.
