Windows 10 Upgrade

Just finished my Windows 10 upgrade. There were a couple of problems, but they were easily fixed. The first was the drivers for my graphics card. Windows 10 deleted the drivers and I had to download and re-install them. Not really a big deal, but IMO, I shouldn't have had to do it. Second, is the security and privacy issues. Apparently, Microsoft wants to know everything about you. I did some research and changed a lot of the settings. Make sure you do a custom install instead of an express. The upgrade only took a few minutes, but depending on your system, it could possibly take longer.

Being a major computer company it would seem like they would have their shit together especially with the amount of time they had to get things right since they released they were doing this.

I downloaded it on my newest computer last week and it was terribly slow. It was literally taking 5 minutes to even open anything. After a few updates from my virus protection I was able to get it moving a little faster. Chrome didn't work right away so I had to reinstall it and it worked fine. After a day or two and a few restarts my computer is actually running faster than it previously was with Windows 7.

FWIW, theres always going to be security issues with new things. People like going in and finding things to make people worry. But as all new upgrades go there are always bugs.

As for the operational aspect I can say that my wifes laptop is running faster than with Windows 8 and no issues of which to speak of yet. I was signed up for the update but since I live in Canuckia I had to change my Language and Keyboad settings English (US) just to get the download started.
After that smooth sailing.

In regards to the privacy issues, its a frightening deal for sure. But I am willing to wager you are selling your soul with just about any device or OS right now anyways.

I don't think I wanna do it. I'm still using Windows 7 and I'm happy with it. Are the new features in 10 really worth it? I saw a message on my desktop saying I could download it, but I've been putting it off.

People are gonna laugh about this, but I had Windows Vista before Windows 7. It definitely had a few issues at launch, but after a couple updates it was basically a Windows 7 clone and had the same look/feel. Windows 7 comes out, everyone loves it To me Windows 7 felt like Vista repackaged with better marketing.

Being an IT guy, let me try to help just a little.

1. If you use Google, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, etc., you aren't giving MS anything you haven't already given to the others.
2. One of my staff has loaded 10 and loves it. Of course he's an IT techy, so what you and he consider issues may be totally different.
3. The upgrade times and difficulty will differ with everyone. This is due to your current system and the changes you have made or the behind the scenes changes that have been made by websites, software you loaded, etc. your anti-virus also plays a big part in this as it will be scanning the update as you download it and install it. I haven't updated yet, but if MS doesn't ask you to disable your AV app before download and install, you may want to in order to speed things up. The speed of your internet access will also play a role. If you have cable modem service, try to download it during the day when there are a lot fewer users in your area online.
4. MS has made vast improvements in their security components functions starting with W8 and since released updates, but no AV software will catch everything. They can't write code for something if they don't know what it does or how it's written. It would be like you writing a biography on me without talking to me.
5. As far as driver updates, etc., MS doesn't fix others problems. MS informs certified vendors of their upgrades and updates well in advance. Those companies have agreed to maintain and develop their software and hardware to be compatible. They are supposed to provide MS with the changes before the release comes out so MS can include it. Doesn't always happen.

I read a while ago they are banking on new customers and software buys for new revenue to make up for the huge loss. Ever since Windows 8 was introduced, I have bought nothing buy Mac and installed VMWare Fuzion for Windows based software. So far I am liking this set up.

If you go way back, you will find much of the core of the OS is the same regardless of the release. Vista and W7 are pretty much the same, but 7 was improved to use less memory which made everything run a little faster.

I'm really liking the update. Can't speak to it from a tech guy standpoint, but my download was easy, the look is sleek, and all of the things I liked from Windows 7 are still there. Windows 8 was clunky and was pretty much built for a tablet. The upgrade to 8.1 was nice, but I'm told that 10 makes for a really nice interface between your tablet, phone, and desktop. I haven't tried to do that yet.

Its free because Windows 8 was an unmitigated disaster, especially for their coporate set.

Overall I'm liking it. It made me have to reactivate some of my programs and reset a few personal preferences and it was slow at first until it had done a couple of updates. The new browser, Edge, is much better than IE. My only issue so far has just been having to learn a few new things, some stuff not where I'm used to it being, a few minor features no longer available, etc. I like it so far.

(1) Very few people actually paid for an upgrade to devices that they already own, which is why there's huge fragmentation for windows which hurts the user experience, prevents them from encouraging the use of other microsoft software. Most people just stay with the same OS that they bought the computer with, so they're really not sacrificing much revenue.

(2) It is incredibly expensive to support old builds. They're just cutting support for XP which came out over a decade ago.

(3) They're trying to put out their own app store like Google and Apple, plus Cortana is an attempt to get a better hold of the search market.

This is the direction the whole consumer software industry is going. It's the best evidence that Microsoft "gets it", and overall it's a pretty good OS as far as I can tell. Get the upgrade, it couldn't be much easier.

Just upgraded my work laptop yesterday. Got tired of waiting, so I added a line in the registry to force the update. Went home last night to do the same thing and the home PC was finally selected for the upgrade.

Has to be the easiest upgrade MS has done. It was quick and painless. Pretty much all of my settings didn't change which was always a problem with past upgrades. So far I like it. The jewels are gone and those functions were moved back to the start button.

GTTG............Support for XP was discontinued in 2014. If you are running Embedded XP support is still valid until April, 2016. If you like XP and don't want to change, you can extend support for XP through 2020 at no cost. It's a quick registry change. You can find it if you google it.
