Who's next to commit? How many slots?

I got pummeled for saying with attrition about 22 a few months ago. I read an article a few days ago (ISD??) that noted 21-22. And consider that with there's over 5 months to go to NSD. Attrition (injury, academics, ResLife, PT transfer) could add to it but Boyd and Badger opened slots already so there could be more (normal) attrition or it may stay static.

As of Saturday afternoon I'm thinking there's 6 slots left:

RB 1
WR 2
OL 1
DB 1
?

The slots shouldn't be considered fixed, I've changed them 4 times so far since I first typed them here. Kelly likes flexiible players. Is Daniel Smith a WR or S? There are others that start practice this week that may find position switches that modify the '11 needs.

Prestwood could be a Top OT 5 come Signing Day but he's got a steep learning curve this season. I still think ND wants another OT to replace the one that won't be coming in next week. But consider that Carrico and Springman could line up on either side of the ball. ND could pass on the OL for the better athlete at some other position.

Is Huggins a RB or a Slot Back (or is Hayes)? Huggins could play either but on paper I thnk he fills a WR slot, if he wants it ala Golden. Shuler is another flexible recruit.

The CBs are gonna be 6-0 tall and could play S with added muscle.

5+ months to sort it out.

Thanks BGIF, knew I could count on you for answers

This thread actually has a difficult question now: Who will be the next commit? Total guess, but I say Christian French.

With a little less than 1/3 of the class to complete I think we will see a very high quality of player compete for these last 7 spots. I think Lyons will be next. I think Davaris will be excepted but that will be in a month or so. Maybe Huggins, French

Well I'd say it's a response more than an answer. I wouldn't hang my hat on it particularly the positions and respective slots.

I thought we'd take 4 DBs in this class, 2 CBs and 2 Ss. Right now we have 3 DBs but what's the breakdown? I think were in agreement that we're looking for a S in the 4th slot but do we have a Safety now or 3 CBs? All are 6-0 to 6-1 and range from 170 to 185. Granted they're entering their senior HS season so they have time to add some muscle - if one or more were to play S in college. But SAY, Lyons and Chris Jones both want to jump on board now. Do you turn one away with diminishing slots left or do you go on the Take The Best Athlete Available Theory?

I'd like to see another OT but not just a warm body. A guy that's going to contend for a starter's spot in time. IF a recruit the caliber of Richardson or Kouandjio wants to come do you close the door?

As I said in the previous post Hayes fills the needs at RB but if Huggins wants to come, they'll find a spot to play him ala Riddick and Wood.

What happens if Kelly and Company come out of the gate like Willingham did in '02 (but will a real offense not the smoke and mirrors supported by an opportunistic defense that was supplying short fields for the Offense to score on) and one of those blue chip QBs Kelly offered says, "Coach, I'm a believer. I want to be a part of this". Do you take a Top 5 QB you were chasing eagerly a few months ago or do you take the #37 S (figuratively, I have no idea who the #37 S is)?

At this point, ND needs 1 Safety anyway and 2 Receivers, regardless of where you line them up. The remaining available slots I'd use for the Best Athlete Available.

If the next "I'd like to accept your offer" comes from one of those OTs above, I'd take it and close out OLs. If it's Williams, Daniels, and Huggins or Shuler (I'd take 3 of them for Offense) I'd take them or SOMEONE of their caliber that becomes a believer or emerges during their senior season.

I suspect half of the remaining slots to come from ATHLETE types rather than a specific HS position player, guys LIKE Atkinson, French, or Shuler.

This response should be sufficiently wishy washy enough to put me in contention for the next opening as White House Press Secretary (either party).

BGIF or anyone else, do you agree at this point you have to take the approach of, I can only accept a guys commitment if he is better than one of the 15 I have commited right now? Do you think BK and the coaching staff do some sort of ranking of players they have offered, one can only assume.

Yep, we need to be pretty picky now. Only blue-chippers or players that fill needs (like safety). BTW, we have 16 commits.

W Lyons is going to UF...let's just be realistic. He isn't coming to ND as much as we want/need him.

How would you complete the rest of the 2011 class?

How would you complete the rest of the 2011 class?

With possibly six slots remaining, I would be very happy with:

Kasen Williams, DaVaris Daniels, Antonio Richardson, Savon Huggins, Wayne Lyons, and Miles Shuler.

2 WR, 1 OT, 1 RB, 1 S, and 1 Athlete

IDK if im more excited about 9/4/10 or 9/3/11!

Ummm. I hope your not serious. This year will help set up future classes. If recruits see that we are gonna be consistent and have at least 10 wins a year and play in bcs bowl games and compete for national championships more will jump on board, cause right now Kelly and staff are recruiting for a 6-6 team last year and 15-21 program over our last 3 years. Compare that recently to Florida and Alabama almost matched our win total in 1 year. IF we struggle and a departure for one of those schools happens and a recruit has a shot at early playing time there then you bet your ass they are gonna seriously listen, with a good chance they'll choose one of them.

Yes i'm excited about this class, but Kelly and staff need to prove to future recruits that they can develope talent. And most importantly WIN. If that happens more blue chip prospects will come our way. Just my 2 cents.

As far as being picky... ND has not had a class hold together for some time... you need to take the kids who are of a position of need that want to come here... being picky has burned us time and time again...

just my two cents

I agree with you except I would take Lateek Townsend instead of Miles Shular. There is just something about Lateek that I love. If I were able to take a seventh player it would be French and give him a shot at offense first lol

I think we have room to be picky tho. Unlike coaches like Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer, we are selling what the school has to offer as far as academics and tradition. Kids arent just falling in love with BK, theyre falling in love with the university. I think the class itself is stable for the most part and we have a few months to take a run at a couple top notch guys. I dont think we will pass up on a guy like Richardson. You can never be to deep on the interior, not to mention his upside is amazing. I think we have a slot open for at least 1 reciever. Daniels should fill that out in months to come. I think we have the time and ability to chase some highly touted guys and round out a top 10 class.

If there is that few a slots left open then I dont see how we can hold a spot open for anyone.
I do have a question though. If we have offered a player and he decides he wants to commit, can we tell him no? For example, say we are chasing Kasen Williams and Daniels and Daniels commits first. Can we then tell Willams nevermind. I always thought we could but a different thread brought up the topic and had me confused.

1. How many Early Enrollments in this group. Counts against last years number.

2. Fifth year seniors - How many are asked back. These guys are all Charlie's recruits.

I would think there are a few very anxious guys out there right now. If Daniels does get ousted with the numbers, he is going to hate it. Had he had the academic numbers he would already be part of this class.

Ok so this weekend knocked three studs off my board of players remaining. If II says we only have three maybe four slots left, then where do we go from here? I would say the DE and OLB position are pretty much taken care of. So my remaining board looks like this-

Antonio Richardson
Davarius Daniels or Kasen Williams
Wayne Lyons
Christian French

I understand this is more of a dream close-out but with what happened this weekend, we should expect the best.

1. We have issues with the 85 scholly limit, not the yearly 25 limit. So early entry guys have almost no effect.

2. I think this is going to depend on how certain guys perform and who we would be losing out on. Can you pass up Wayne Lyons because Harrison Smith finally performed to his abilities at safety? Going to be some tough decisions come February...

Hopefully Lyons...

And Kasen and DaVaris.

By the way, does anybody know when DaVaris will be retesting and or receiving new test scores?
