i've been having MAJOR problems with my computer lately. problems involving trojans, freezing at start up, etc. i'm posting this on safe mode right now and want to know if anyone on here really knows their computer stuff. i've posted my problem on a computer help forum, but i figured i'd try my luck somewhere else too. so if anyone really knows what they're talking about, let me know and i'll post my problems on here or through PM or something.

I'm A+ and Network+ certified. I'm not Bill Gates, but pretty experienced with viruses, trojans, spyware etc. PM me with specifics or even in here and I'll see what I can come up with.

Switch to Ubuntu. I did it about 6 months ago and haven't had any problems (viruses, freezing, etc.).

I was thinking about purchasing a desktop PC preloaded with Linux (Ubuntu). Does anyone have a good review for this. I know very little about linux. Can I download windows-based programs onto linux? Will linux limit my ability to do things I can do with Windows XP??

IMO, Ubuntu is fantastic. I haven't had any problems with it. The other day, I was bored and reinstalled XP. I had nothing but problems. I couldn't get my sound card to work even after downloading new drivers for it. That lasted for about 2 hours before I switched back to Ubuntu. For Windows programs to work, you have a few options. You can either have a dual boot system, have either XP or Ubuntu in a virtual machine, or you can use a program called Wine which is a Windows emulator. Wine is updated constantly and would probably be your best bet. I have a few programs (Cinema 4D, Photoshop, and other graphics programs) that don't work correctly in Ubuntu, so I'm using the virtual machine method with XP as a guest.

I'll dig up some links for you to take a look at when you have time.

First of all Linux/Ubuntu ROCKS! And yes it will inhibit your ability to do some things. If you are wanting to use Windows applications you need to install Wine on your Linux/UBuntu system Wine HQ Also, you can get drivers for most peripherals now for Linux/Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a fast O.S. compared to any Windows O.S. One thing I would recommend if you are going to use Linux/Ubuntu is to get familiar with Command Lines.

Also for anyone having problems antivirus xp 2008 or 2009 download Malwarebytes. This will fix any and all problems with antivirus xp 2008. Antivirus XP 2008 is what is considered a rogue application. Basically it takes over your machine and causes severe system slow downs I have seen it on a machine that is running McAfee to cause it to blue screen. You will need network capabilities to run Malwarebytes as it downloads the virus definitions after you install it. Note Malwarebytes is a free application. any questions just post here.

Also, it is believed that one of the places this virus/rogue application is generating from is an email from admin@microsoft.com about upgrading to I.E. 7. Microsoft pushed out the upgrade to I.E. 7 through Windows XP Service Pack 3 so it does not make sense that the admin@microsoft.com email is valid.

so i ran malwarebytes and it found and got rid of a bunch of trojan applications. so i'm pretty sure i'm cool with that now.

another problem i'm having is that my computer will freeze up after i turn it on. i'll log on under my account and it'll freeze up shortly after before everything loads. i'm fine when i log on under safe mode so i created another account to see if i could log on under that one. it worked and i'm logged on using normal mode. this might just be a lucky thing so i'm gonna try to log on under my account again and under this one to see if the same thing occurs.

I would recommend just reformatting and starting over if it isn't too much trouble. Do you have lots of stuff you can't lose? When was the last time it was reformatted?

I agree with Junkhead everyone should reformat every now and again.

Just get all your important data off and blow the thing away.

Go to your manufactures website and see what it will take to get another one.
