I have a question: What made people think Kelly was only going to try to get 2 and 3* players?

For me I really had no good reason, it was just a "what if?" thing. I think it's not something specifically about Kelly but in general a new coach coming in and wondering how it would go. I think the bigger recruiting thing for me was if the staff who could handle Notre Dame's true nationwide recruiting and not doing an overkill in the midwest.

while i think it is a valid concern to some degree because his track record was as a regional recruiter alot of people have blown it out of proportion. plus its probably because alot of people (including myself) are a little gun shy from the previous HC hiring debacles.

Nice article on ESPN about Kelly focusing on recruiting the offensive line this year, and the possibility of adding Hegarty and Austin to the fold:

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are building their 2011 class on the offensive line - ESPN

"Those who follow recruiting can also see the possibilities of completing the class on an extremely high note. ESPNU 150 Watch List offensive lineman Matthew Hegarty (Aztec, N.M./Aztec) is a national-level recruit who has been bullish on Notre Dame for some time. The Irish are in great shape there. Offensive tackle Brendon Austin (Parker, Colo./Chaparral) is another prospect with the Irish under heavy consideration. Notre Dame would gladly take those two and call it a day on the offensive line.

It would also leave the Irish with one of the best classes at that position in the country."

-If we perform on the field this year, this class could be really special.

bringing in bruce heggie brought out a lot of concerns (not from me, but from others)

fwiw, i seen a recent picture of heggie (without a shirt) and looks pretty damn massive, so while he was only a 2star he looks to have some potential on that frame of his.

Texas with the #2 and #4 OT from Scout standards at OT and the #1 OG, I would say they probably have the best line. Not contradicting the article or you Ironman8 just pointing out that Texas probably has the best. I wouldn't mind being 2nd for sure.

Hopefully it's Lynch and Daniels....

Kelly is really shut up the folks who worried about his recruiting abilities... which I admit I was one of them initially

How many Cincy players were drafted this year? How many BK players have been drafted ever? any impact players?

I have a question: What made people think Kelly was only going to try to get 2 and 3* players?

probably because that is all (mostly) he has got in the past.....?

I think just the fact that is all he has had experience with

my thoughts exactly

The important thing here is that Kelly always recruited as well as you can in different recruiting pools. Now that his pool is much greater, it only allows him to go places he couldn't go before. His charisma made him successful everywhere he has been, and Notre Dame will be no different.
Besides charisma, the key to good recruiting is hard work and to win football games. Things that I am not concern with Brian Kelly.

Think of recruiting as a Sales a job. Has he ever had as much to sell kids as he does now? I think it is logical to think he will have much more success with a better product.

Joe Staley played for Kelly in CMU right? He was a starting tackle, I don't follow the 49ers, so I don't know if he still is.

I was simply quoting the article, although they did say one of the best classes, not THE best class, which I would have to agree with if we pull one of or both those big boys.

In the past 3 years, here's what we've seen:

*Cincy has had 11 players drafted.

*Notre Dame has had 9 players drafted.

We're in good hands boys...

that really is insane to think cinci had more draft-able talent than ND! WOW!

he puts hard working, athletic, football players on the field and lets them compete. If they dont compete they are rammed in the A**! (IMO) Kelly takes an approach that actually sticks to the point of, the best player will play, in ALL aspects of the game. I LOVE IT...

P.S. -- seems in most posts positive about BK, were stoked for the season to come because of BK. I want it to be known as well, like mot, im to excited and over-predicting-ish as one may say, of the season to come.

Oh I know you were just quoting that's why i said not to contradict you. Just saying Texas line in the 2011 class is awesome. Like I said not trying to start any fight just pointing out the obvious I guess.

especially if we can land jordan walsh

Repeating the question from this morning when you wanted Walsh:

So you don't want Hegarty and/or Austin?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Rephrasing for Hegarty's commitment:

Do you want to give Hegarty back or just take Walsh over Austin?

What do you see in Walsh that Kelly and Warinner see in Austin as they've offered Austin and not Walsh?

Is there anything other than a single recruiting service's ranking number?

Your tone seems very aggressive and you clearly don't know me if you ask a question like do I want to give a recruit back. Never.

How do you know what Kelly and Warinner see in Walsh vs. Austin, just because they have offered a scholarship to one doesn't mean that Walsh won't receive an offer.

I like Walsh, he is a chicago guy, he is a former teammate of Watt, being recruited by Big 10 schools. I have a buddy that went to Iowa and anyone we can take from their backyard brings me glee. And yes, Walsh is ranked by ESPN and Scout.

Loving the positive press right now. I think this momentum is going to continue.

"Those who follow recruiting can also see the possibilities of completing the class on an extremely high note. Even Prestwood is doing some recruiting:

"Coach Kelly and the whole staff are great," Prestwood said. "They are doing a heck of a job with the offensive line for this class and are making great offensive linemen want to be a part of that great program. People can see that with the three early offensive line commits."

They didn't get the memo on Hegarty yet apparently. Faith in Kelly, gentlemen

That article was posted two days ago, before Hegarty committed. I posted the link to the article and some quotes as well earlier on this thread.
