Hey baceprost- excellent post- thanks for the inside info. Being out here in Boise area I have been able to see alot more coverage of the local guys making this same decision- whether to take the mission now, after 1 year of college, or afterwards.
More of the area (read NW schools) have more experience working thru all of the ramifications of athletes coming and going, none more than BYU, Utah, Utah State and ISU. As some of these larger schools compete for the elite players that also happen to be mormon they need to look at how these schools have dealt with the guy going away for 2 years. It does pose certain challenges - like depth chart position-and scholarship numbers and what kind of commitment is made by both student and team/coach.

Hope Te'o is being able to convey his wishes and the ND staff can come up with a plan to work for him, if indeed he wants to go on a mission.

It isn't as if Te'o, already regarded as the top recruit in the state, needed more exposure. He is already ranked 14th in the top 150 prospects in the nation by the Web site. Te'o said he has 29 offers in writing, including Notre Dame, Southern California, Tennessee, Louisiana State, Auburn, to name a few.

Te'o played linebacker and running back for the Buffanblu last season. He said he is being recruited as a linebacker.

"I'll play inside or outside (linebacker)," he said. "As long as I'm on the field playing."

its true, why go play where you already have someone elses trail laid before you. make your own path and it theres stuff in the way either blow it up or cut it down.

I understand he will/would be a great player, but I have never thought we would/will close the deal w him. I see the 2 yr mission break he is planning on taking after his 1st year as kind of problematic. Just reading that last article, you see how easy it is for these guys to come back from being gone for the 2 years and transfer right over to BYU.
Being in the general area of Utah (Idaho), we see alot of recruits sign up at a local school (Boise Sate, Idaho, Idaho State) for that 1st year, go on the 2 yr mission and come back only to transfer to BYU. I don't blame the athlete, that is just the way it often plays out.

if they believe that strong in thier faith and religion then good for them and the carrer path they choose. just hope it works out for us. i mean we had a muslim here. we are open to all religions and i just hope that concern isnt a deciding factor for him

I do not know, but I imagine the main thing might be that they have been away from the athletic hoopla and working out and adulation for 2 years, immersed in their faith w only their missionary partner to spend free time with. They live that faith, and then when they get back, it would probably be hard to leave that great support network of like minded faithful mormons to go to a university that is not about their faith. That would be my thoughts- but then again, I am not of the LDS faith, so who knows.

if your faith is strong it is strong in your heart and what ever extra caricular activities you participate in shouildnt affect your faith related goals. if they do, then you shouldnt participate. my buddy is a mormon and growing up he couldnt do anything on sunday. i respect that. i dont do much either other than watch football. not b/c im mormon but because im lazy and love football. but if the faith is the question what happens if he gets drafted. hopefully alot of mnf games

they made that choice. i wouldnt want to go somewhere and be compared personally. i joined the marines when i have 5 family members in the army including a 3* general. i could have had it on easy street. they made that choice. thier dad told them to go wherever they thought would best suit them. but notre dame is the obvios choice of colleges

As far as being away from his faith, there is a Mormon mission in Indiana, from what I understand. Although it is not the hub of his religon, there is support here for him.

i cant imagine don carlo and the praying manti in the middle. there isnt going to be a runningback in the country who is going to want to run up the gut. if thats true (and im taking everything with a pile of salt) that would be sick./

I can't just let that one go by. Where did you hear that? I sure haven't seen anything from about 4 sites w news and articles that have talked about Te'o turning green.

Throw us a bone, JJ here and give us some specifics before we try to get excited.

I'm not lying about being geeked, but i am also realistic on each recruit. I have never been sold that Te'o will come here, and before i start to change my way of thinking about him specifically, i will need a better reason than just "I've been hearing..."

Tell me where or who from.

I can stay geeked enough on those we got and those we really have a good chance of getting soon.
