He's already had 2 major knee injuries, and will have an engineering degree to fall back on. Declaring this year should maximize his value.

Don't get me wrong, Drue is awesome and one of our top 5 players on defense IMO. But a 6' undersized LB with 2 major knee surgeries who won't test spectacular isn't getting drafted IMO. I think he can sign as an undrafted FA and be a ST player for a while if he wants, but no sense in coming out early to be undrafted IMO.

Get that grad degree. Do your thing or a grad assistant after that. Become a coach in time.

https://www.onefootdown.com/2017/6/...hip-chart-fighting-irish-85-scholarship-limit

With all current commits and potential fifth years, we already have 92 scholarships for next year. Potential fifth years are:

Freddy Canteen
Nic Weishar
Quenton Nelson
Alex Bars
Jimmy Byrne
Sam Mustipher
Jonathan Bonner
Pete Mokwah
Jay Hayes
Drue Tranquil
Nick Watkins
Tyler Newsome

So we're going to have to have a ton of roster attrition if we want to take 25 this year.

Bars mustipher bonner Hayes Tranquill and Watkins back hopefully!

You're assuming that they won't first sign their NLI, and then just go to UCLA, somehow, anyway.

Speaking of, did that guy ever do anything? Lost track of the years so not sure if he tried to go pro or not? If still on UCLA's roster, sucks to be him with their 4-4 season...

Off-topic, but still waiting for a true fullback to be offered. I was thinking about it during the game against NC State.

We line up with 4-TE's sometimes, with one in the backfield as a fullback. And it's not an H-back type of thing... we use the TE as a legit fullback in the I-formation when we run Power-O. HE's getting downhill and lead-blocking, not just swinging around the end looking for a seal like we did with Luatua.

Is fullback a legit need for the offense moving forward? Or does it make sense to just keep TE stocked and make sure one can be a legit lead blocker?

I think it would depend on the player, and if Long keeps the I-formation stuff in the playbook, or if it's just because letting Adams get downhill is the best option for this current season.

Oddly enough, Loy doesn't think he'd be able to commit on the spot should he want to. This was said a week or two ago. Staff is quite confident in their CB board and, at that time, didn't think they'd take Wilkins. If that is bad info, then Wilkins could very well be it. Though ,he too, has stated he would like other visits. He's also publicly disappointed he hasn't received more offers. Not sure that is the sign of a guy you want to commit or is ready to commit. Though that is JMO.

To update this, in an interview with rivals, Wilkins said that committing is on the table if he feels like ND is the right place for him. That doesn’t really change what Loy said as his post was from the staffs perspective, but wanted to update this.

So what are we looking for to finishh?

1-2 OL
2-3 DBs
1-2 WRs
Plus an odd 5*

It definitely appears we want another LB

Only the right guys at LB. That's why Dax, Solomon, and Payton are being targeted.

I'd assume it's only 1 OL unless Mays and NPF both decide they want to come (highly unlikely imo). Save that spot for next year when Hiestand can get a 2013 or 2014 like haul.

DBs numbers look right, but I guess it depends on who commits first.

The only way I see 2 WRs is if ASB wants in the class.

Mike Frank just mentioned the other day that if ND wins out, they'll be turning away guys that they never dreamed they'd turn away.

Who did the staff turn away from 2013 due to lack of room? I wasn't following much at that time

I think he'll be back, but if he does test the waters he'll probably end up at SS in the pros given his size.

My thoughts:

GS's & Senior's

Exhausted Eligibility
McG
Bivin
Cam Smith
Smythe
----------
Martini
Trumbetti
Morgan

Graduating or Medical's

Gone:
Canteen - Medical if they have to count him (2yr eligible GS - unique situation)
Byrne
Mokwuah
Webster - walk on scholarship
MVG
Cage
Nelson

That's 14. Need 4 more below to cover the 18 commits so far and one more for each new commit.
Anyone who wants a 25 man class, scratch off 9 names below.

Maybe:
Weishar
Newsome
Bonner
Tranquill
Adams

Junior's

Tough to get rid of juniors, they don't want to transfer. They want the ND degree and then GS somewhere else to play final year.

NFL?
Tillery
ESB

Medical
Tiassum - Not hurt but if there's one person they wished was a Sr, it's him. Might get creative.

Soph's

There will be attrition here. Last chance to transfer before Grad Transfer

Candidates:
DJ Morgan
Studstill
Elliott
Vaughn
Ogundeji
McKinley

Freshman:

I have a feeling we'll see some movement here

Candidates:
Adams
White
MacColister
Davis
Ewell
Robertson
Wardlow

Hopefully not Ewell. Really want to see what he can do-looked so much like he would play this year based on eye test.

Bonner will not be gone unless he wants to play football elsewhere. And IDK why he would - he's the starting DT.

He'll absolutely be brought back for a 5th year. Not to not pick at a really good list you compiled, but we can stop talking about Bonner not being back.

I can't imagine Tillery or ESB going to the NFL after this yr. I can't see either one being a top 4 round pick at this juncture of the season. The OL and running game has quieted the ESB hype quite a bit. I think another year in college would do both wonders in further development and exposure for the NFL.

Tillery would be a day 2 pick, guaranteed.

ESB is not a NFL receiver based on this year, so I'm with you there.

Terry Jillery may not have the strength or the bulk to hang out in trenches of the NFL

I don't see Tillery leaving early,

DJ Morgan I could see as a transfer, Mckinley won't be going anywhere, highly doubt Ogundeji does either. Is studstill, elliott, or vaughn playing at all this year? I could see Avery Davis transfering depending he has book in front of him along with Wimbush or another year or 2, and Phil behind him?

For the current Juniors, any who enrolled early and aren't playing might be able to complete their degrees and grad transfer if they know thats what they want to do after this season. Having the extra semester and the summer sessions should make it pretty easy for them. I don't know how many of the juniors enrolled early, but I think Micah Dew-Treadway did.

MDT would seem to be the only player that would apply to. The other EE's that year were Tillery, Coney and Hoge. Hoge is gone already and Tillery and Coney wouldn't be interested in a transfer.

What are the chances if Mays and NPF commit, taking away Mabry and Dirksen's offers

I've never heard of ND doing that kind of thing. So it would seem unlikely.

I give us almost no chance in landing Mays. I was kind of surprised that he actually did arrange an official visit.

Something has to give....or someone has to give up an scholly....either way....

IMHO taking a Mabry and Dirksen and have them sit for 4 years ala Byrne isn't the kindest action to take.

let them go play in the MAC, where they can be 3 year starters
