Perhaps, but if Golson gets hurt, we'll have two QBs with zero experience.

He has had 3 years to prepare for his playing time. He is a run threat only he WON'T beat anyone with his arm. Tell him to go worry about being a doctor and good luck.

problem is he never even makes the right reads on such running plays. its simply awful to watch as a fan :(

So when Golson gets hurt we should just bank on two guys who haven't taken a snap in college. Good plan coach. Kizer needs to redshirt next year. I don't think anyone would argue that he'll be ready to play next year. That leaves Golson and Malik. While you probably don't ever expect your starter and backup to get hurt, it happens.

There is almost a 0% chance Hendrix isn't asked back. You want 4 QBs. Going into a season with just 3 and 1 being true frosh with zero experience is a recipe for disaster if you get unlucky with injuries/violations/etc.

Yup, plus the defense would greatly benefit from having a scholarship QB on the scout team versus say a cornerback who played QB a couple seasons in high school.

Are you referring to the "read-option" plays? I'm pretty sure ND doesn't actual run the read-option. I think the QB gets the call from the coaches to keep it or give, so I don't think he is making the wrong read on what looks like the read-option.

i know this was the case with EG but I believe Hendrix was given true Read Option plays as part of the package of plays he was trained up to be able to utilize?

the ****** thing is that he looks like he is giving 100% effort, but he is getting abused..i re-watch games throughout the week, my kids love it...and so i get opportunities to focus on players vs the game....and he is there in all of the plays but diving in missing the tackle, being taking out of play by a block and not shedding downfield or just getting turned every which way in passing...i feel bad and pissed at the same time......really hope that 5 year kicks in like harrison did

Agree completely. He's always flying around, he seems to be just barely missing making plays though. Not to pull the compare-a-white-guy-to-a-white-guy thing, but he reminds me of Motta's first year or two getting PT where he'd be busting his *** but seemingly a step too slow or a step out of position.

Both Farley and Collinsworth seem always to be a step slow to me. At least Farley has good ball skills and made some sure catches on easy interceptions. Both are great kids, teammates, leaders, etc. but it's another case of limited athleticism mitigating great intangibles.

Whoa, no way. Lombard is at the very top of the list. Everyone else is expendable.

I respectively disagree. And I didn't mean for that to come off as Lombard shouldn't come back. I personally think he does come back. I just think Moore and Hendrix coming back are more important. We need the depth at ILB and as others have pointed out, Hendrix needs to be there to backup Golson. I don't think the staff will trust a red-shirt freshman and a true freshman w/ a combined zero snaps to be the backup. After those two, Lombard (with his experience) comes back. After that, I think it's a crapshoot and depends on how the recruiting class fills out.

Lombard is an entrenched starter ... no way he doesn't get offered a 5th year, regardless of who else we can get or need.

I do think that Moore and Hendrix will come back, but I don't see how pure depth guys who haven't showed that they can be effective playing significant game reps can be more important than a starter.

Quality depth is important, but our depth chart is not desperately thin at either ILB or QB, if you believe CBK. Kelly said at a recent presser that he's not worried about ILB ... we have plenty of guys who can play ILB, just looking at body types. He mentioned Romeo Okwara as an example of a guy who can play a lot of different positions, including ILB. No reason that Moore, likely just a depth guy, would be more important than a starting-caliber player. Same with Hendrix ... depth at QB is important, and Hendrix's experience woudl be useful, but I don't see how a pure depth guy can be more important than a starter when we already have talented guys to provide depth.

Point taken. But to clarify, I haven't been advocating that Lombard not be asked to return for next year.

I won't debate 5Ys any further. Every year a lot of us (myself included) freak out about the possibility of not having enough room to take all of these elite recruits and it never works out how we think. We debate which 5Ys come back and which ones don't and so far more than we've predicted have returned. Alot can change between now and Feb, so I'll just sit back in enjoy the ride.

will hendrix have the option to transfer out to another school to play even if he gets offered a 5th?

Sure, but he has said that he will come back if offered.

You never know, but I expect Hendrix to be on the ND sideline next year.

Just my opinion, but I think Hendrix is ready to move on from football if ND doesn't offer him a 5th year. Don't think he'll be interested in going to another school. He is going to do great things in the medical profession.

Absolutely. I have a feeling all of Hendrix, Moore and Lombard come back.

EG was a redshirt freshman who had never taken a snap...and was named the starting QB. MZ will be in the same boat (and likewise, an EE to boot), but asked to only be a backup.

If Hendrix doesn't come back (whether it is his or BK's decision), the QB depth won't be ideal, but it's not disastrous. And what would Hendrix probably be? 3rd string QB?

I understand people wanting to bring back Hendrix, but honestly, all he really offers is experience. I'll take ability over experience. Especially when trying to navigate the dicey waters of limited scholarships at ND.

Exactly. I'll also take talent over experience every time. Keep him only if there is a spot at the very end.

Anyone else think the lack of urgency in recruiting at RB this year (minus Hood) could help the confidence of Folston and Bryant next year? I'm sure it would be good for them to have the feeling that the coaching staff is confident with what they have now.
