Not a bad list! I'd like to see us round it out like this (and I think we have a very good shot with most of these guys):

RB: B. Marshall, W. Mahone
DL: J. Jones, K. Kirven
OL: A. Peat
WR: C. Brown
ATH: K. Russel, A. Reeves
S: Jarrod Wilson (bit of a reach at this point... you have to think the staff offered Turner in part because they did not envision adding Wilson)
CB: TJ Davis
OLB: Spence (not quite as bullish as I once was on Spence... but I'm not sure who else besides Odenigbo we really have a fighting chance at right now)

QB: none
TE: none
ILB: none

Lax's D-line wishlist reminded me of this:

Kelly doesn't appear overly concerned with landing a "true" NT in this class. Most of our D-line targets seem to be SDEs like Tuitt that can switch between a 3- and a 5- technique easily.

Is it just because there aren't any standout NTs in this class? Have we overestimated the importance of a player like Nix compared to the flexibility of players like Tuitt? Hafis and Cwynar performed admirably for us during the last four games of 2010, and neither of those guys are true NTs. /shrug

I am digging that you have 3 RBs (including Russel) and I would love if this is how our class finished!

My gut tells me no on Wilson and Spence, and only one of Kirven or Jones and maybe add an OL like Garrett. I like the Chris Brown pick, I think he is a sleeper.

I am also feeling at least 2 decommits.

Anyone know if were recruiting Chris Brown for the outside? Or is he a possible slot candidate?. I would have to imagine the staff wants the last wr spot to go to a slot guy like thomas.

Getting big recruits to visit on USC weekend would be HUGE. the atmosphere for that game would make anyone give ND a second thought.

DT is loaded with players.

Nix 4 years
Cwyner 2 years
Newman 2 Years
Stockton 3 years
Williams 2 years

and that is for a position where only 1 guy is on the field at a time.
Kelly is recruiting flexible guys up front. Schutt is a true NT, Jones can play anywhere on the dline, Kirven and Day are smaller but can handle NT occasionally. e will take Schutt if he commits but will be more than happy taking Jones to fill that spot. Next year expect a true NT to be a big target.

Hmmmm.... I'll give that "some" credence as a hypothesis, but I don't see things the same way. Newman and Stockton have as yet shown no evidence that they can play at this level. Both Cwynar and HWilliams will be gone when the 2013 season arrives.[Newman too for that matter].

One recruits for two years ahead and more. 2013 could arrive with Nix, no members of Lynch's class for NT, no members of [shall-I-call it?] Shepherd's class for NT, and us dependent upon a single man [all fingers crossed against injuries, let alone what Kelly calls "work volume concerns" with Nix] plus some incoming freshman. I REALLY don't like that scenario.

I don't think that Diaco does either. We're offering and pursuing several candidates still, to avoid it. But I don't want to argue about it, so take it as just a thought.

OLB: Courntye Wynn
MLB: none
CB: TJ Davis
S: none

Which brings us back to my hypothesis that perhaps the focus on a "true" NT is misplaced, since Kelly seems to be angling more for SDEs like Tuitt who can switch between a 5- and a 3- tech easily.

Jason's Recruiting List currently lists the following D-linemen: Schutt, Jones, Day, Kirven, J. Watkins, C. Watkins, and Wynne. Of those, Schutt seems to be the only one that could be described as a "true" NT, and we're very unlikely to land him.

Jones and J. Watkins strike me as a prototypical 3-4 DEs; Wynne is difficult to project at the moment, but I'm inclined to lump him with Jones and J. Watkins. Day is similar to Ian Williams in that he's more suited to playing a 3-tech. Kirven and C. Watkins could potentially grow into promising NTs, but they seem more like 3-4 inside/ outside guys.

To put it another way, if bringing in a "true" NT in 2012 is as critical as many of us believe, shouldn't our offer list look a little different? I suspect Kelly doesn't share our concern in this regard.

Don't give up on Schutt just yet. Long season, and I think Nix & co will perform well this season. Schutt could be a late pick up

To toss in one last bit of pure speculation: Premise---Diaco's view of a shifting/transforming 3-4 is subtler and different from our own. If so, it would be "nice" to continuously have a mammoth run-stuffer/ space-occupier to always man the middle [even offset when it presents a 4-down look,] but, if not manned that way, then power players like Tuitt, Springmann, Schwenke [and certain current recruits] can fluidly move in and out of "3-4" arrangements which at the snap begin to look much more like 4-3's. In such situations, mobile players with athleticism and an appropriate mean-streak [Niklaus? Hounsell?] might find themselves wreaking havoc from "the inside". Given loaded Waves of such guys to keep sending at the enemy, they wouldn't have to be massive monsters, just monsters.

Take that for what it is: ignorant BS by an old guy trying to see through the fog.

p.s. it will be interesting this season to see how often an Ethan Johnson or a Kona Schwenke, or a Stephon Tuitt, seems to be lined up as a defensive tackle "4-3 style" with a Nix/Cwynar/HWilliams still on the nose. Just outside them being Ishaq or Fleming, hand down. I know that Diaco will do this, but how often is the interest. It will say something to the point of this thread.

Forgot that his top 3 was ND PSU OSU. I think after seeing all the decommits from OSU and Tressel not being there I don't seer why he would want to put himself in that situation. PSU has shown that they aren't on our level of recruiting and I don't expect them to have that good a year. Has anyone else here been to State College for a game. I was there for the 07 game and besides our offense not being able to score I distinctly remember the whole city smelling like **** because of the smell of manure being blown in from all around state college.

If I recall correctly, we lined up in a 4-man front roughly 40% of the time in 2010. If our pass rush makes the kind of progress most of us are expecting in 2011, I'd expect that % to increase.

There is going to be a hybrid defense possibly at the end of this year at the soonest....but more likely 1-2 years away. Going to be very very fun.

Wasn't sure where to put this since there are a couple recruits that are still considering Michigan.

ESPN Insider

College Football Rumors - Rumor Central - NCAA - ESPN

"U-M is expected to use their remaining scholarships on two wide receivers, one fullback, one tailback, perhaps two more offensive linemen and another tight end, if the scholarships are available."

Just to give us a sense on who Michigan is looking at and if some players are no longer on Michigans radar.

Tailbacks on scholarship:

Vincent Smith -JR
Teric Jones- JR
Michael Cox- RS JR
Jihad Rasheed- RS FR
Michael Shaw- SR
Fitz Toussaint- RS SO
O'Neal Swanson- RS SO
Stephen Hopkins- SO
Thomas Rawls- FR
Justice Hayes- FR

And they want another?!

Also, does this mean they are done on defense? Definitely is not the #1 defensive class in the country if they are done.

Out of the rumblings that Mahone, Day or Davis could be next, anyone have a particular favorite? I know we need a RB. I'd be happy with all three. Getting commits is a giddy feeling.

Davis > Mahone > Day, for likelihood to verbal.

My question is say we get Mahone and Russell, but Byron Marshall wants aboard later on...do we take him?

Or say we get Mahone and Marshall (Byron, let's not get carried away), and Russell wants aboard too...do we take him?

Yes, on both fronts, mainly because of Russell's ability (and desire) to mainly play slot WR with some carries out of the backfield, rather than be a feature back. Thus, in both scenarios, we are recruiting Marshall as a feature back, Mahone as a power back, and Russell as a Riddick type swing player that would excel in the slot. You also always find room for a player of Marshall's ability regardless.

Perfect. Because I want all three of them.

FYI, this is what Russell said today regarding his desired position and use on offense:

"Washington wants me as more of a slot guy and a return specialist; Cal wants me to be a running back," Russell said. "I think I'm going to play the slot because that's the position these days. The Percy Harvin type of guy that can just make plays."

Regarding academics:

"It's all about academics for me," Russell said. "If you get a degree from Cal or Notre Dame, you are set for life, and Washington's academics are getting stronger each year.

"They are on the rise on the field as well. Notre Dame never really fell down, at least not as much as people think."
