About a third of the way through New York. Think my next two books will the The Godfather and The Witches... both already sitting on my bedside table. Since my father's passing I have quite a collection of unread books and I still like to buy here and there, both GF and tW were recent purchases.

Ha, and playing off my last post I got a handful of these when my dad passed... haven't read any yet...

I struggled with 'Patton', but 'Jesus', 'Kennedy', and 'Lincoln' were great. Your dad is still giving you gifts even after his passing. sorry to hear about that.

Just finished 11/22/63 on my lunch break.

Really good and a bit different than most Stephen King, though he lets his true self shine through in parts of the conclusion.

And honestly, the end was kind of a let down after so much good buildup, and after so much potential for colossal ramifications was established.

Not disappointed I read the book at all, and I'll probably give it 4 out of 5 stars on GoodReads because of how well King mixed his own style with historical fiction, but I'd like to know what his original ending was, because the published version has an ending that was essentially written by his son, and wasn't at all what I thought it would be.

"To Have and Have Not" by Hemingway. You can see the influence on crime writers like Elmore Leonard and Richard Stark (Donald Westlake). You get pulled into a story that's all about the grubby little details of people's grubby little lives. Not much happens but you can't put it down, and the next thing you know, you're at the end. Now I want to go to the library and pick up more by Hemingway.

Finished New York last week... good stuff. It wasn’t Pillars of the Earth level historical fiction but it was still quite good.

Wanted some horror for October and picked up a collection of Ray Russell, never read his works before. Reading Sardonicus first, very good thus far.

I think I'll get through Russell fairly quickly... any suggestions on a good Fall/Halloween read that isn't so obvious (King, Rice, Poe etc...)??

My wife and Sister in law LOVE the 80s film... which I rate as one of the single worst movies I've ever been forced to sit through. It would be hard to pick that book up after that experience... freaking Lynch.

Anyway, I'm stopping by Barnes and Noble for lunch. Thinking of picking up "The Witch's Daughter" and/or "A Discovery of Witches". I always get in a scary/supernatural mode this time of year and kind of exhausted most all of the more well known options over the years.

Have you read The Haunting of Hill House? It's my favorite spooky read for Halloween.

I actually haven't... I think the film adaptations kind of impacted my reluctance just like with Dune. I'll look for it today, maybe pick one of the two witch books and that. Thanks.

This is bizarre.

I never post in this thread (but read books often). Came in here to say, finally finished my first sci-fi book, Dune...

Absolutely great story!

haha, my wife forcing my sister and I to watch that with her was pretty much like a real life version of the Clockwork Orange indoctrination scene.... just a mention of Dune, makes me cringe today.

I'm a huge David Lynch fan. Dune is the last thing I haven't touched. I recentely decided to "try out" a sci-fi novel. Remember I have put the movie off until I read the book first.

Excited to check it out! (also, I love Kyle MacLachlan)

Love KM and Lynch too. A little disappointed in the Twin Peaks reboot, but loved his earlier stuff. Lots of good performances in Dune. Even enjoyed Sting lol.

I think you have to like Lynch, and be an old school science fiction fan to like it. Ebert, IIRC, tore it up something fierce. Had a lot of good actors in it too.

Cheers to the late Dune readers.

You may like 'Stranger in a Strange Land' as well. Both are very approachable, enjoyable reads that permeate culture in various ways.
