I'm not really into whiskey but as I have aged (only 32 now) my taste has changed. You'd me would of never thought about buying an IPA but now that is all I drink. I want to try to get into whiskeys or something a little finer but honestly don't want to waste the money if I don't like it. Any suggestions from you guys on something smooth that won't break the bank and how to enjoy it?

My personal favorite is Willet bourbon. It will run you about $40. Its mostly personal preference to me, but I have always found bourbon to be more enjoyable than most whiskeys(Tennesse, Irish, Rye, Scotch). I either have it with a few drops of water to open up the flavor or just a handful of whiskey rocks.

Granger is right that bourbon is probably the way to go if you are dipping your toe into whiskey drinking. If you want to get to the point where you are drinking whiskey neat, I wouldn't just start drinking whiskey neat. That might work out if you really enjoy it, but it's probably going to be too much. I'd recommend making some simple syrup, buying some cheaper bourbon like Bulliet, buying bitters, and making yourself some old fashions. Then after a couple of months, try pouring some on the rocks without the syrup, or just lessen the amount of sugar. This is good for several reasons:

1) This will likely be more palatable to you if your not experienced drinking liquors straight;
2) This will allow you to drink cheaper stuff until you find that drinking straight is something you can do easily;
3) Doing it this way allows you to learn how to make cocktails, which to me is as important on the man scale changing oil. Every guy should know how to make an old fashioned, a martini, a vesper, and a Manhattan.

I would recommend Glenlivet 12yo. You can probably pick it up for $25-30. It is relatively soft with notes of apples, pear and slight vanilla and coconut. It isn't anything special but it is very reasonably priced and approachable.

For bourbon I would say Evan Williams Single Barrel. It should also be in the $25-30 range and trends towards the sweeter side with some fruit notes, caramel, light oak and cinnamon. Though it will vary bottle to bottle.

I suggest that you drink them neat (meaning without anything added). It might take you a little bit to adjust to the bump in abv but it is worth it. Take small sips at first and take the time to smell it. I also would recommend buying one of these glasses

This is good advice. One quick way to not get a taste for whiskey is to start off drinking it on the rocks. You still sip it, but halfway through the ice melts, and you end up drinking warm whiskey water.

I would add that Makers is a simple to find, smooth entry into bourbon. It's cheep, but easy to drink.

I Agree with all the posts above. I almost exclusively drink bourbon. If you care to search....almost all my posts in this thread involve some sort of bourbon for reference. For a nice priced bottle the Evan Williams Small batch is spectacular neat. Larceny is a good wheat bourbon that is easy to drink in mixes or neat. Many bourbons are currently overpriced because of allocation to certain regions so beware. You should be aboe to find decent bottles in $25-35 range.

I got this book for christmas. Its a very good book on cocktails. I agree with greyhammer as well about how to start. I wouldnt jump right into drinking newt bourbon especially wheaters. Once you start going in the newt direction, enjoy the aroma, and flavors. Experiment with adding a few drops of water, or chilled. Have fun. There are some wonderful drinks to be had.
