How does Bulleit Rye compare to the regular Bulleit? Better? Way different?

Very different. Regular Bulleit is a "high rye" bourbon-- roughly 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% barley--like Four Roses (in fact, IIRC, Bulleit is made directly from Four Roses stock, so the mash bills are identical). Bulleit Rye isn't bourbon at all, but a rye whiskey, with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% barley.

In my opinion, regular Bulleit is a good (not great) example of its style, while Bulleit Rye boasts the best QPR in rye whiskey. I always have it on hand for mixed drinks, and for guests who prefer a straight rye to bourbon.

Is Bulleit Rye that much of a sure thing. Since it seems to be getting some love I looked at local prices a 750 for $20 from Total Wine or a 1.75 for $30 from Costco. Thoughts?

Best bang for your buck, as far as rye whiskey goes. Cheap enough to use freely in mixed drinks, but good enough to enjoy straight as well. There are obviously better rye whiskeys out there, but they tend to be significantly more expensive than Bulleit.

On a related note, most straight rye whiskeys available today come from the same white dog produced by MGP of Indiana. So Bulleit Rye has an identical mash bill to High West, Redemption, Templeton, etc. But it's much cheaper than all of them.

Robert the Bruce Scottish ale by Three Floyds. On point. Not on the same level as alpha king or zombie dust, but a solid beer none the less.

I love the High West Rendezvous (but a portion of it is 16yo).

Thanks for the info Whiskey.
So do I go conservative and just get the 750ml for $20 or go balls to the wall and get a 1.75L for $30.

Today at Costco I grabbed a bottle of Lagavulin 16yo for $55, quite the steal.

I would normally suggest going conservative, but if you ever mix drinks that utilize rye whiskey, the 1.75 L won't go to waste, even if you don't love it as a sipper.

Wow, that's way cheaper than I've ever seen Lagavulin.

I don't really make mixed drinks but I generally don't let any whisky go to waste. I once bought a bottle of littlemill 8yo as it was a closed distillery and I wanted to try it before it was all gone. Tasted like envelope glue and lemon pledge. I drank the whole bottle anyways. Damn if I was going to waste my money and now I don't need to wonder why the distillery closed (though to be fair about 2 years after I opened it the lemon pledge turned to a more natural lemon flavor but it still had the envelope glue flavor).

Get the 750ml then. Your palette is much more refined than mine. And keep in mind I'm recommending it as a value rye; so expect New Belgium's Abbey, instead of Rochefort 10.

I walked to the local billiards tavern for a Yuengling draft because I drank all my home store of booze and didn't think driving for more was a good play. There was an older couple jawing at the bartender, when they got up to leave, the guy takes a hard tumble into the wall. We all help him up. He cusses and argues against having his wife drive his pick up truck. I convince him that wife's are generally smarter and more resourceful than us men. He let her drive. I went back in and the bartender bought me a beer for my help. That's why I like places like that, you never know what will happen.

I've never had a bad Live Oak. Having their Weizenbock, Primus. I may like it more than the Hefe-Weizen.
