Bourbon. ALOT.

Which Bourbon?

For me it was:
Stone Enjoy by 4/20/14
SanTan Hopshock IPA
Karuizawa 1985
Van Wees The Ultimate Longmorn 1996 17yo sherry cask
Chateau Haut-Bergey 2005, 2 glasses. A damn good Bordeaux wine.

The in-laws are in town so the past two nights I have been breaking out good stuff. One more night till they go home so tomorrow should be interesting as well.

Edit: forgot, 1 glass of St. Supery Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.

As per Whiskey's recommendation for my love of brown ales, I picked up Samuel Smith's Nut Brown. Very good, more citrus than I was expecting, and I thought it would be my favorite brown of everything I've tried... Until I cracked open a Madtree Gnarly Brown during Game of Thrones. It was nearly a porter in taste, but still had the hardcore "nut brown" flavor I love. Local to Cincy so I'm unsure of availability, but I would recommend it to fellow brown lovers in a heartbeat.

SanTan Mr. Pineapple as I play Skyrim. Not a great beer but a decent local summer beer.

Anyone had High West Double Rye? I'm ordering some in on reputation, even though I haven't tried it. It has generally positive reviews online. Thoughts? Opinions? Vicious invective?

I have had a bottle of High West Double Rye. Here are the notes I wrote back in May 11th of 2011 about it.

First up is the High West Double Rye. A combo of a 2yo rye and a 16yo rye.

N: Big, bold and spicy. Nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, mint, and evergreen. Some fresh cut rye and hints of vanilla, almonds, molasses, and citrus.
P: Spicy nutmeg, evergreen, and mint. Some cinnamon and cloves plus the fresh cut rye. Citrus with a touch of molasses.
F: medium length on evergreen, mint and cinnamon. Some cloves and molasses as well.

Not the most complex whiskey ever but very good. 88 points

I have a slight preference for High West's Rendezvous Rye but not by much. If you like a rye to be more in your face then the Double Rye is better while the Rendezvous is slightly softer and more complex.

Here are my notes for the Rendezvous from the same day.

High West Rendezvous Rye. A combo of 6yo rye and 16yo rye.

N: Soft rye, mint, evergreen, and some citrus. Toffee, molasses, some wheat, and corn. A touch of orange and almonds.
P: Rye is a little bigger on the palate. Fresh cut. Mint and evergreen. Citrus (oranges etc), toffee and a little corn. Some nuts and vanilla. Some oak shavings and coconut.
F: Medium-long on toffee, molasses, mint and vanilla. Some corn, evergreen and citrus show up towards the end, and linger on the tongue. Maybe a touch of coconut.

More complex but not as spicy. 89 points just barely edging out the Double Rye

Just spent a week in AZ and had my fill of Papago, San Tan, Desert Eagle, 4 Peaks and Sleepy Dog.

Made a trip to the Region when I got back to visit some family and came home with two cases of Gumballhead and a 12er of Zombie Dust. April is off to a great start.

Thanks. I'm mostly getting the Double Rye because it is cheaper than the Rendezvous by more than $10. The bosses got me counting pennies. I did try the Rendezvous, but I also tried about 9 other whiskies that day with a liquor rep, so my recollection is hazy. BTW, have you considered donating your palate to science after you die, PKT? I'm lucky if I get 1/20th of what you get out of a dram.

(Or, you're just an incredible bullshitter). :smilewink

Anyone got any recommendations from Stone if I pick a few bottles up tomorrow? I know they've got several IPAs just from seeing them in passing, but idk where to start.

Their standard IPA (green label) is one of the best regularly available IPAs out there.
Their imperial IPA Ruination is damn amazing as well.

You can't go wrong with either.

Edit: If you see the Stone Enjoy by 4/20/14 buy it and don't look back.

My wife would say that I am an incredible bullshitter. Though in all seriousness I am very good at recognizing flavors and smells from what I am drinking or eating.

Uinta Detour Double IPA.

Some nice citrus (primarily orange and grapefruit) with lots of bready notes with some caramel. Pretty good but not something that I will most likely try again. If you like more malty IPAs this could be a buy though.
