I have a buddy who's going to San Diego next week. Any suggestions on beer he should be looking for?

Also, anybody try the Stone Cali Belgique?

So a couple questions first.
What styles of beer do you enjoy (besides Hefeweizens)?
What Cali breweries do or do not distribute to your state?
Ballasts Point, Alesmith, Green Flash, Bear Republic, Lagunitas, Coronado, etc.
I would assume that Stone does and Alpine doesn't.

I...will ask him those questions and get back to you tonight. I think you're right that Alpine isn't around here (at least common around here). I'll get his insight and what he's more looking for before I start answering too many questions.

Lost Coast and Speakeasy are two great (northern) Cali breweries that may not be everywhere, I'd look for those...

Lost Coast is good for their fruit brews, Speakeasy for their unique but good takes on a variety of styles...

So my buddy doesn't discriminate against beer. He would just like to try stuff we couldn't find here. Things like Alpine and Stone Enjoy By (which I haven't seen yet) I think are his style.

San Diego is the King of hoppy beers.

Stone Enjoy By (current release is 4/20/15)
Alpine Nelson
Alpine Duet
Alpine Pure Hoppiness
(pretty much any hoppy Alpine beer, their non-hoppy beers are just ok)
Societe The Pupil
Societe The Apprentice
Societe The Roustabout
Alesmith IPA

If you can find it
Russian River Pliny the Elder (or the Younger)
Russian River Blind Pig
Any of Russian River's Sour Ales (Beatification, Consecration, Supplication, Temptation, Sanctification, etc.)
Knee Deep Simtra

For non-hoppy beers
Alesmith Speedway Stout
Alesmith Numbskull
Alesmith Wee Heavy
Most of the Hanagar 24 Barrel Roll series is pretty good

Other good to great San Diego beers that seem to be available in Texas so might not be unique:
Ballast Point Sculpin
Green Flash Palate Wrecker
Ballast Point Dorado
Green Flash West Coast DIPA
Ballast Point Victory at Sea Coffee Vanilla Porter

I have also enjoyed Coronado Skull Wrapper IPA and Coronado Sock Knocker DIPA but they aren't as good as the other IPAs/DIPAs on this list.

Other California beers that are available in Texas but might be worth trying in SD
Bear Republic Racer 5
Bear Republic Apex
Bear Republic Racer 15
Bear Republic Racer X

I am sure that some others such as GoldenDome or NDCrusader can provide more info than me. If I think of anything else I will let you know.

Edit: Also forgot to add very good but not great beers such as Port Brewing Hop 15, Port Brewing Mongo DIPA, and Lost Abbey makes some pretty good barrel aged beers such as The Angel Share, Deliverance and Cuvee de Tomme.

Yesterday I had a Valpolicella Ripasso that was to die for. Amazing. I may be hooked.

Do any of you guys brew? I want to start getting into it but am weary of the Mr. Beer type kits that kind of seem like a rip-off.

Suggestions?

I do, start slow, if you try to make a double chocolate, raspberry stout right off the bat you'll ruin it. Start with a nice gold and take baby steps... I would recommend going to a hydroponics store and getting the real deal kit too... Not the forty dollar bucket you see at target or bass pro shops.

I have tried the Mr.Beer kit before......not good. I have been doing research and reading some books to brew my own beer. I have been so busy with work that I don't have the extra time. Hopefully when things slow down this summer I will set up something and brew my own. I would like to take classes as well.

You'd be better off making Pruno in your toilet than getting a Mr. Beer kit IMO.

Tonight I started with a bottle of KBS, followed by 3 Oberon, one Founders Porter, and a bottle of Bells Jupiter. Now I don't want to go to bed. Damn it!!!

What do you think of it?

First, apparently some trickster smuggled this into my luggage in CA, because this isn't available in MI. Hope this trickster put more in my suitcase...

Now, I'm not usually a fan of Porters but this beer is terrific. Coffee and Vanilla really comes through, as does the alcohol (maybe why I like it).

Great stuff!

Just to add from this already nice selection:

Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin
Noble AleWorks "Showers Series" specifically, Citra Showers and Nelson Showers
Mother Earth Kismet
Monkey Paws Bonobos

My suggestion--just go to Alpine and get bottles and growlers of Nelson, Keene Idea, Hoppy Birthday, Bad Boy, Duet, O'Briens, Pure Hoppiness in that order. Also if you eat at the brew pub, the pulled pork sandwich is great.

Then stop by Monkey Paws Brewery and pray they have Bonobos.

Then go to Stone in Escondido and take the tour. After, grab some brews and enjoy the scenery. They have had Monkey Paws Bonobos here before too, so it is worth a shot.

I believe I forgot to mention earlier. I talked to a rep from Live Oak; the Hefeweizen and other offerings should begin to be bottled and be available in early 2016. Despite my pleading, he couldn't rush the project.
