What 4th and 5th years will return?

I have no idea what their QB situation is like right now, but how about Clemson for EG? He's like a better Taj Boyd

They have a true sophomore Deshuan Watson returning though his durability is questionable. I'd think USC is the most likely landing spot if he chose to leave ND. I believe Spurrier would make room for him.

Teams that would love a skilled QB in 2015: Wisc, MSU, Miss St, Ole Miss, Florida, Florida St, South Carolina, LSU.

Taj Boyd never got benched, correct? Second of all, he's not leaving. In my opinion, he will be the starter next year.

Look , I took my Graduates, I have a MBA in IT.... they not only did a background on my College studies, they went as far back as my Middle School studies. Getting into graduate classes is not as easy as one may believe. And, when you have an academic integrity issue, it gets really tough and sticky getting in much less getting a scholarship for it as well.

Diz

haha... wut?

They certainly didn't ask me for that when I applied to my MBA program.

What I am saying is he might not choose to go to grad school at ND. Or he might not qualify for ND grad school. Therefore he would be unable to stay and play next year. Unlikely, but he may choose to graduate from ND then transfer somewhere else ala Christ, Hendrix, Wilson etc...

He was kind of forced into a transfer in early spring a loooooooooong time ago

MSU? You think Cook is leaving early? (not a wise move on his part, needs polishing and could really improve draft stock) Or do you think Sparty would flush away Cook's last year of eligibility for a shorter lighter lighter guy with a recent penchant for turning the ball over?

IIRC Cook had a press release a few days back where he stated he was def coming back next year, so I think you're right on.

Edit - Here's the article: Michigan State Spartans QB Connor Cook says he'll return for senior season, bypass NFL draft - ESPN

I think Stanley and Day return for their senior seasons. If they were unable to get a high enough grade by the NFL to jump, I doubt any one else does either. Though some times there is a surprise (Niklas), so there is that. With 57 scholarships to be honored, plus 22 new recruits/committed, that would leave six spots to play with.

In my opinion we need: 1 more safety
1 more running back

5th years available: Golson
Daniels
Carlisle
Hanratty
Hegarty
Martin
I. Williams
Farley
Schmidt
I know there are more, such as Collinsworth and Baratti, and though they play at a position of need, can we really afford to go through another year with them ambulatory?
I think you have to bring back (1) Martin at center, Hegarty makes me cringe. The alternatives, Hoge or Montelus leave that spot a question mark for next year. (2) I feel Schmidt is a lock for a couple of reasons. His leadership/knowledge on the field would be hard to replace even next year. His production at the position was also impressive enough to warrant his return. (3) If Golson wants to return/can qualify for graduate school, you bring him back. It's a no brainer, no matter who starts we have a proven back up. Without him, one injury and we are venturing into the unknown. As Zaire is a running quarter back that is a distinct possibility. (4) From the remaining, I find myself looking to that aforementioned "need" and Carlisle seems to answer it. I know he plays slot but in a pinch he could return to running back. The last two spots have me swinging like a pendulum, I. Williams seems like he would be a good return yet if some one like Gustin/Cowart wants to come I'd say walk away from Ishaq. Some one like Jamabo commits and I say you walk away from Carlisle. Finally, say Ross wants to sign can we do without Farley? I am glad I'm not a coach, these decisions are difficult for me and my opinion means nothing. With so much talent already on the roster, it makes me optimistic for years into the future. Any way there's my 2cents worth.

Day is gonna stay. He received a stay in school grade form the NFL evaluators.
Barratti is done due to injury.
Grace could possibly have a medical year.

I have nothing against Carlisle but don't get all the love in wanting him back for a 5th year.

We are stacked at WR and if he comes back then how in the world are we going to manage to keep everyone involved and happy. bringing him back stunts a bunch of others' development and probably causes 1-2 to transfer out.

I mean, look at what we already have
Solid contributors from this year ready to make next step...
Corey Robinson (can be a #1 receiver, too)
Will Fuller (#1 receiver)
CJ Proisse (could be a poor man's Golden Tate)
Chris Brown (becoming more and more reliable and don't forget Oklahoma 2012)

Promising guys waiting to break out
Corey Holmes
Torii Hunter
Justin Brent

Talented incoming freshman...
CJ Sanders
Guyton
Boykin
possibly ESB

not to mention 4 or 5 tight end options. and what if Daniels comes back, too.

I find myself agreeing with you on all counts but every time I look at our RBs I come back to that "Amir my be nice to have as insurance and he isn't bad at slot", feeling. I'm sure that C.J. and Torii can provide all we need at slot, add in a Sanders or Brent and I doubt we even miss Amir. The injuries of the past few years just have me eyeballing any obviously thin spots on our roster with trepidation.

JMO Daniels shouldn't be asked back.

We never get to 85. Offer everyone back. I think people forget that locker room chemistry matters and Amir is a leader/good team mate.

What's the "21 of 25" mean on the Master List thread? Is that open slots assuming all 5th years return and nobody enters the draft? Open slots assuming NO 5th years and nobody enters the draft?

Russell is not a risk of being lost. He has been active on social media, talking about how he can't wait to get back on the field with his 'boys'.

Yeah, as much as Daniels can be a game-breaker at times, I'm kind of over him after two suspensions and his attitude. He was one of EG's favorite targets in 2012, and EG may not be starting QB anymore. I'm kind of fine sticking with who we have, as long as we get the drops taken care of.

I don't know about a force, but a reliable MLB all season would be nice. I think he is a must to bring back for his other qualities. (leadership, field general, reliable depth)

I think he'll be a "FORCE" too, lol. Because of the qualities you list. I've never seen a defense collapse as bad after losing a player.

His absence had a very noticeable impact, wasn't good at all. Night and day with or without him on the field.
