I've yet to see a year that Kelly did more with less.

He was the "doing more with less", next in line to get a shot at a job with a major program coach when ND hired him. Won big at GVSU, won big at Central Mich., won big at Cincy....just imagine what he could do with the kind of players that ND attracts?

^^^This is the EXACT argument for going after a Bronco Mendenhall....^^^

I was actually referring to while he was at ND. I should've clarified.

However, did he really do more with less? Or did he just play lesser opponents?

He played lesser opponents, certainly. But he was at a lesser program. He has succeeded at every level and took a Notre Dame team to the championship game with Golson/Rees.

On the backs of a D loaded with NFL talent. I'm not saying BK is a bad coach, I just don't think he's an elite one either.

Better stated than my post.

It was also the argument for Urban Meyer before he went to Florida. It was also the argument for some of the Boise coaches before they left for greener pastures (see how I did that...green...not blue...).

We've had this argument. By the definition that most people give, only Saban and Meyer are elite. The both have jobs.

He also wasn't playing the level of teams, or talent, that he does at ND. The results have been mediocre.

Playing easier schedules. Plus, teams don't circle "Cincinnati" when the schedule comes out.

As I said above...easier schedule, but at Cincinnati, a lesser program. He took them to an Orange Bowl and a Sugar Bowl. That's impressive stuff.

So what makes anyone think it would be any different with Mendenhall?

It's not about defending Brian Kelly and his results. It's about not firing Brian Kelly so we could hire Brian Kelly II.

This team has scored a lot of points in the last 2 seasons. Despite the awful 3rd down play yesterday and what we consider some questionable play calls at times, we scored 34 points yesterday. I have no doubt that with our offensive line and the way CJ is running, Kizer can be set up for success. Let's see some of those weapons on the outside. I'm waiting to see Alize get cut loose. I know we have talent on this roster at receiver.
The defense, I really can't figure it out. I know there's talent, but schematically something is off. There's no way that the intelligent athletes that we have should be so out of position on a regular basis. Simplify, dumb it down, use sticks in the dirt. I don't care, just put these kids in a position to be athletes and make plays. There is no way that a kid with the ability of Nyles Morgan shouldn't be on the field because he can't pick up the scheme.
I have faith men. I love Malik, but I truly believe that Kizer can be put in position to succeed. Kid is a big, strong athlete. There will be hiccups, but I said it before, Malik only was a 3 time starter. Go Irish!

I don't like nice things....they break.

The difference between championship seasons and going 6-6... Talent, Coaching, and luck. This year we have talent and some depth. I still question our coaching at times. And, just like last season no luck.

We are a good team. Competitive. Win or lose, GO IRISH!!!!

p.s. Fvck Michigan.... I can't believe they won yesterday....jerks.

I'm not throwing Kelly out, but skepticism is healthy. I thought it would be valuable to re-visit Brian Kelly's results at Cincinnati; looking only at losses and games vs. ranked opponents. Which win was impressive stuff?

I'd also like to remind everyone of the coaching "bush" if you will that was the Big East during the Kelly at Cincinnati era:

West Virginia: Rich Rodriguez (2007) was a major failure at Michigan going 15-22, though he's done an ok job at Arizona since 2012, going 28-14 (15-12 in the Pac12). Bill Stewart (2008-2009) had never been a head coach before and died in 2012 after an odd ousting by Dana Holgorson.

Rutgers: Greg Schiano went on to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012-2013, where he went 11-21. He is currently out of coaching.

Pittsburgh: Dave Wannstedt. As a Bears fan I really have nothing more to say about this... other than, he is currently out of coaching.

Connecticut: Randy Edsall inexplicably abandoned UConn for the likes of Maryland, where he has gone 21-31, including 10-22 in conference (ACC and B1G).

South Florida: Jim Leavitt was fired after striking a player in 2009 and attempting get fellow coaches and players to lie about what happened. He is now the defensive coordinator for Colorado. Hey, they held Umass to 14 yesterday.

Louisville: Steve Kragthorpe went 15-21 during the Kelly era, including 5-16 in the BigEast. He has been a positional coach with Texas A&M and LSU since then.

Syracuse: Greg Robinson was fired after 2008 and is currently the defensive coordinator at San Jose State. He was 5-37 as a head coach. Doug Marrone was the coach in 2009 through 2012. He is currently the Jacksonville Jaquars assistant to the head coach and OL coach.

Cincinnati during Kelly era:

2007
W 28-23 @ #21 Rutgers
L 28-24 vs. Louisville
L 24-17 @ Pittsburgh
W 38-33 @ #21 South Florida
W 27-3 vs. #15 Connecticut
L 28-33 vs. #5 West Virginia

2008
L 26-52 @ #4 Oklahoma
L 16-40 @ Connecticut
W 24-10 vs. #23 South Florida
W 26-23 @ #20 West Virginia
W 28-21 vs. #20 Pittsburgh
L 7-20 vs. #12 Virginia Tech (Orange Bowl)

2009
W 28-18 @ #24 Oregon State
W 34-17 @ #21 South Florida
W 24-21 vs. # 23 West Virginia
W 45-44 @ #15 Pittsburgh
L 24-51 vs. #5 Florida (Sugar Bowl - Kelly had left)

Bit of perspective from a Ga. Tech fan:

ND will never win another NC until you do something to fix the O'Leary thing. You guys think the Bambino curse was bad, you do not even know you are living under this one. Do any of you realize that the man had just signed a 15 year contract with Tech, with the only provision in it to leave being an offer from ND? Think he might have been a little more motivated than this series of fame hungry wannabes that you keep ending up with? The day you fired him was the day I lost respect for your school and stopped rooting for you.

I hope by now everyone knows how badly CPJ wants to beat CBVG and why

ND has over 50 four and five star players on it's team - Ga. Tech has 3 four star players - can you imagine the embarrassment you would feel if....

And Rudy was offsides

I would welcome you to the site, but instead I'll just say, "EAD"

I would really like someone to elaborate on this. It seems like BVG became a head coach at a school and said what the other 98% of coaches think in regards to the triple option: "Nah fuck that.."

What's the big deal?

Yeah just going to nip this in the bud and tell you piss off. How the hell you "lose respect" for a school because they held someone accountable for lying is beyond me... shouldn't you lose respect for the liar? Many people on here rue the day O'Leary didn't stick given his track record and success at UCF, especially because Tyrone Willingham set the school back immeasurably.

Anyways, most of us expect a loss. So... yeah. Trash talk really has no effect when the board is already trash talking itself.

Also, bonus points for originality.

Every fucking year, bad shit happens. Debilitating shit. I can't believe how out if it I feel now. It just never stops. Zaire, the one guy we couldn't afford to lose. It never fails. FML

Not meant to be---- the injuries and all but I was very disappointed in the defense, it was a perfect time to step up and they DID NOT. Hey I know its college guys and they have other responsibilities every week like getting educated in their choice of life skill development but man o man that was very bad recognition on defense. Now I can just relax and enjoy the schedule and see how well they can do with what is left. Pressure is off boys your not making the last 4 teams without JonesZaireFolston-- who's next? The elephant in the room is now the QB a FSU.

This was posted on r/cfb, anyone heard anything similar?
Rumor from an athlete who lives in my dorm: ND had some massive NCAA violations and is possibly facing huge sanctions/repercussions after this season including loss of scholarship/wins. This may be tied to Charlie Weis, but also could be related to academic events over the last few years. I really don't have any evidence for this, because it's a rumor, but I thought I'd pass it along.

This situation can go one of two ways:

1) The team curls up in a ball and gets man-handled for the rest of the season. BVG gets rinsed at the end of the season and the recruiting class goes to shat.

2) The O-Line takes complete control and the defense looks deep within themselves and starts running around like a pack of crazed dogs. ND has a season that goes down in infamy behind their backup QB who had only taken a few snaps in his career.

My guess is much ado about nothing; HOWEVER, would not be surprised at all.

After seeing UNC twisting in the wind for the last decade after probably the worst sports academic scandal ever, I wouldn't worry too much regardless.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

But, is some guy in his dorm knows, why wouldn't someone connected to the program be in the know, and reported it.

if true, and especially if this comes out in the next month or so.....
