We can't stop the rollout

My only complaint I'll voice tonight.

It's been nagging me. EVERY SINGLE TIME, the RB/FB/TE is WIDE OPEN on the rollout with nobody in front of him.

Neal and Smith were both 4-star recruits and have been here for years. The thought that an untested freshman or two is the answer is a bit short sighted.

Neal and B. Smith don't have "IT"....it's been four years, we should realize that by now.

Experience is nice when you're making plays and making a difference ONCE in a while.

Agree. Shembo is going to be a dominant player. 3 sacks already, he will be the differencemaker that ND needs. I think the D is feeding off Manti which should bode well the rest of the season. They kept the 2 backs in check which is not easy. Great performance by the D today.

Neal and Smith are getting better each week in my eyes. But still, i would like to see Shembo in the game more often. I don't care whether its their side or Fleming's side--just get him in on passing plays. He has moves and the strength to shove by at still formidable speed. My opinion---take with salt.

This. With proper coaching, we'll turn the ship around - but it'll take time and solid work at practice. I'm glad we're winning games, but I'll be much happier if we play fundamentally more sound football every game. The penalties in today's game were a bit much, but we did much better with turnovers. If we keep up the progression, good things will come to us in the next few years.

The whole team has grown from improved coaching. In that sense Neal and Smith are playing a little smarter and not making as many mistakes.

My point is, even when they are making the right read or decision, they're getting beat more often than not. I'm not really holding my breath that in the last 6 games up their career they'll somehow improve their speed by 35% or "live up to their potential" or play as good as Te'o and Carlo.

I mean through 6 games the both of them have what....4 or 5 really good plays?

I guess we could say that the future guys may not be that good, but we're really setting the bar incredibly low if we're afraid/concerned/unsure how we're going to replace Neal and Brian Smith.

Kinda seems like if someone was wondering how we'd ever replace Brandon Walker at kicker. We have nowhere to go but up at OLB as far as I'm concerned.

Great athletes, better than you and I, are doing what the coaches ask of them. These guys are neither slackers nor dummies. I'm liking Diaco.

me, too. I'm with Neutered on this. There are great athletes who learn quickly without playing time and there are great athletes who only learn with lots of real-game situations.[Point being that some of our veterans may be picking up the new systems slower than others, but all are getting there]. I have seen no instances of what I'd call dogging it out of our guys, and since they're still getting game time, believe that Diaco doesn't either. Also that means that he sees more good things than this board apparently sees. I am wondering if, without actually grading every play, members of this board don't realize that many of the plays on which OLBs are NOT mentioned are because they did such a good job that the opponent "didn't go there". I just hesitate to be that much of a critic on the basis of what seems to me to be very fragmentary solid knowledge. If people HAVE really good "whole game" analysis, I'd really like to hear the "larger picture" results of that.

Thinking that top notch recruits with years of game experience will be worse than a kid fresh out of high school is brain-dead. Sure they were poorly coached, but plenty of guys from the #1 recruiting class a few years back are under-performing. Now that we have a legitimate coaching staff, things should change.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with him too. My point is just that I see the play of our DE's and can't help but hope that Tuitt and Lynch can come in make an impact. Although there is much to be gained from actual playing time, I see Frosh and Sophomores all the time that outplay upperclassmen who have MUCH more game experience.

I know that this is like you said probably the exception to the rule but I will always hope that the next hot recruit is the answer.
