Watching the first game conundrum

Here we are 5 days away from the first game of the year, and the first game of the Brian Kelly era. I've read "Blue & Gold", and Maple Street press' previews, and watched all the vids I could getting ready for this year. I have been counting the days, and eagerly anticipating the season. I have been wearing blue, and gold all week to show the love. So what happens?

My wife, and I were invited to a barbeque on saturday, Of all days! Don't people realize this is the first weekend of college football? To make matters worse my fantasy draft is sunday morning, so I will be out then too. When I told my wife I couldn't go to the barbeque she looked hurt, and asked me why? When I told her the reason she looked at me like I was crazy. Don't women get it? Should I feel bad here? There's no way in heck I would go to a barbeque, and have a good time, knowing I'm missing the game. Of all the days...She asked if I would mind her going alone to the barbeque, of course I didn't, but i know I will be getting a week of guilt trips. Say a prayer for me fellas!

Prayers on the way, Brah... That's a bunch of crap. Who schedules an event during football season? They've had all freaking spring and summer!!! Now all of a sudden, everyone's supposed to just drop what they're doing for their over-done burger, dogs and cheap ribs??? I think not! This is ND, baby! Stand your ground...

Hell no, Giant won't go...Hell no, Giant won't go...

;) ;)

My wife understood before we got married... ND games happen 11-13 days a year... those are mine... if anything gets scheduled it gets cancelled the minute it is known it was scheduled during cfb saturday, OR she carries out the committment on her own...

that's all I can tell you man. hope it works out for you.

Any chance that you could work with the hosts and have a TV on the deck, patio or in the back yard tuned to the game? Offer to bring extension cords, a set and 50 yards of RGU cable.

Get the joint jumpin'!

Luckily my wife understands because she is a college football fan as well. Most chicks don't get it, like watching the 3 Stooges, or Godzilla.

Great minds think alike. I actually am considering asking my wife to phone her friend. If I can hook it up there I will go!

Hell, with today's technology you could do it with a tricked out laptop able to project streaming video on a wall or white sheet tacked to said wall.

Beer, barbecue, friends to yell with and an ND game to watch ... could life be sweeter?

Assuming, of course, you don't embarrass and/or piss off your wife. And the Irish dominate.

These are the times when I couldn't being any happier about being a young, single man.
If I had to put up with the wife bullshit during Irish games I might shoot myself.
I think I've figured out if I'm ever going to find "the one", she is going to have to be a diehard Irish fan like myself.

Yeah, she may actually prefer me to stay home, rather than watch in public at her friends house, with other humans present to see my antics! Actually it may serve a purpose, as we may never be invited to a saturday barbeque during football season! :devil_2:

I can't watch my favorite sports teams with people. It just doesn't work. I'd go for it and try to stay home.

Tell her you'll work out a deal with her... you'll miss the ND game and be mister charming husband at the gettogether and she'll take anal once you get home....

then tell her the look she just gave was worse than the one she gave when you told her you had to watch the game, so you assume that means you'll be staying home...then tell her you're glad you both managed to work this out dipolmatically then tell her you hope she has a good time and to sayt hi for you.

Of course, if the latter occurs, does the former even matter?

1) Good job with the proper use (and spelling ) of "latter" and "former."
2) ND winning can soothe and salve many a wound.
3) Embarrassing and/or pissing off the wife can have repercussions that span decades, not just a single season or two.

Trust me. I know whereof I speak.

Years ago my wife posted a calendar in the kitchen to mark down engagements - so I wouldn't miss them. I quickly learned that I could write on the calendar as well. The 2010 ND schedule was marked on the calendar last January. Start times were added as they became available. Just trying to helpful to my wife in planning our life. She appreciated the heads up and tells her family now "Let me check the calendar. Whoops that's a late kickoff. If you want to see him that Saturday better make it lunch. Yes, she's a keeper.

Carpe diem!

right on right on...

my wife wasn't the biggest sports fan in the world when we married BUT she was at OU when Stoops and Co. won it all so she kind of understood... plus she has the laid back attitude of your average guy, rather than the average woman, so I got lucky there...

Carpet Denim Indeed!!

I would use all my write up's at work before I miss a ND game, I would go through 12-13 girlfriends a year before I miss an ND game, I would break 12-13 trojan legs before I miss an ND game

I missed the Michigan game Ty's finalk year... the one were Darius had his coming out party... didn't he set some record in that game???

anyway, I watched the beginning with my then girlfriend (not my current wife) and we hadn't been too hot and heavy as of yet... after ND fell behind she offered to make me feel better if I turn the game off and my attention to her...

about an hour or so later I turn the game back on and we are ahead comfortably and they are talking about Walker's record setting day....

not a bad day all in all.

I hope you work it out...my wife knows now...13 years in.

My issue lately has been my archery hunt. I got it figured out last year...Dish to the cabin...little hokus pocus with some wireless ...and I'm good for 1/4 mile circle. Now I gotta not walk off a cliff watching the game...not a bad way to go I guess.

Point is there is always a way...alas, if it comes down to it, Tivo saved many a marriage my friend. There is no shame in being overcome by events...once!

Good Luck!

That's why I'm not getting married until after football season - might as well get another year in for free without repercussions.

My wife came back from her female bonding/jewelry party, and is fine with me staying home saturday for the game. I told her I'd stop by after the game. Guess it's a win-win. She said she knows it means alot to me to watch the game. Ahhhhhh...love!
