Sorta pointless for a city to legalize, no? County and state can still go wild right?

Either way I'm glad to see it.

I remember when they decriminalized it in Denver and it did make a difference. While you are absolutely right on the state/federal power, if the city states they wont prosecute it, then cops don't arrest for minor incidents. They aren't going to be able to waste the state/federal court's time with every dude that gets pulled over with a joint in his pocket.

legalizes possession of up to 2.5 oz. by adult over 21. Now looking to get it on state wide ballot.

Portland pot vote seen as step toward state, national legalization | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

On Tuesday, Portland residents voted by a more than 2-1 ratio to make recreational pot legal in Maine’s largest city, setting the stage for a statewide initiative in the coming years. Portland’s ordinance, which takes effect on Dec. 6, legalizes possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana by adults over the age of 21.

I'm glad it's over an ounce, I've never carried more than 3.5g but 1oz simply isn't much.

It frustrates me that it'll likely take years to get a state ballot though, we need to keep momentum up to get national legalization.

I've got a bud-dy (pun intended) that is stoked (pun intended) that this law got passed (not unlike a doob). Hey NDOM, smoke 'em if you got 'em.

I see this moving very similar to gay marriage. It is slow at first, with just a handful of states doing it. Then the federal government states that they wont enforce the federal laws upon those states. Then eventually it becomes law. They are heading down that same path, imo.

In the end, too much money will be flowing to put the genie back in the bottle.

It's not if but when at this point.

Wel then when we go full on legal with it I'll be very interested to see what happens with any of the following:

-other illegal drugs
-data on DUIs and such
-crime statistics

I'm not saying i think anything specific will happen, just that I'll be interested to see what DOES happpens within a decade or so with the above...

The end of alcohol prohibition provides a good comparison for crime and other drugs.

Deaths and injuries should rise but I cant see any earth shaking problems.

I talked about this earlier in the thread, if people want to find any evidence for significant increases in DUIs, accidents, etc then they have a perfect chance to prove it with California... Oddly enough, not a peep. Wonder why that is?

Well I would think because there no real data set out there yet... something like that, with any real basis behind it, would take years... no?

anyway, I have seen both sides on this for a while but have tended to lean with the legalize it crowd, for the most part... one thing that makes it hard to stand with that side is the "Weed is of the earth, totally harmless and I can drive fine and it won’t impair me at all" crowd. It's like trying to oppose federal overreach and standing with "Obama is a Muslim born in Kenya" guy...

Legalize it all. A grown adult should have the right to poison him- or herself.

I totally agree... though if someone does that they had better pay for their own damn medical bills...

No one can analyze data from 5 years ago?

And that crowd is going to be the ones influencing legislation?

The last sentence is just wacky and I don't know what to say

-I figured you were pointing to data from a full on legalization...

-sorry, I have encountered too many of 'that guy' I suppose... I can really do without the self righteous hipster pot head that insists legalizing pot will impact humanity more than the polio vaccine... Anyway, to me the comparison is valid, very much so.

I agree, I saw thousands if not millions of people turned away from getting their medical card in CA......

I assume you forgot italics... Most of my close potheads unfortunately (you are NOT always the company you keep I supose) and most of them have don't have their cards, though one friend who DID get his has the story that he went to his doctor, said he as a problem, his problem is 'every day after work I get real sleepy'... and the doc hooked him up his card...

smh lol

I go back to my original statement that your friends are pretty stupid if they couldn't get a med card in California.

I prefer the term "decriminalize." There are a narrow set of restrictions on consuming fermented grapes, grains and the distillation of such. This includes the humble potato, elderberry and strawberry.

My days of "smoking rope" are long past. I'm down to a nostalgic toke or two every few years or so. I would like to be able to buy an ounce or two, if need be, as I get older without a prescription or fear of being busted.

My dear, dear mother, who passed away in 2000 from a combination of cancer and Alzheimer's, may have benefitted from a puff or two were she so inclined.

For me, I won't touch it for three reasons:

-it's illegal
-I won't lie to a doc or work the system
-I have a smoke allergy (which really doesn't stop anyone with it's varying forms)

One of these isn't really a problem, two of them... well, you get the point.

That's interesting to me. You won't do it because it's illegal? I assumed most people who really wanted to just did anyways. I personally don't, but I still wouldn't whether it was legal or not.

In all honestly, at this stage I may not either way, but in my younger days, and as recent as maybe two years ago, absolutely... anyway... different strokes, like I said, many of my friends are big time, legal or not.

Keep in mind that there's a Grand Canyon of difference in potency between "my day" and today. That and any and all purchases were expected to be shared generously and liberally. An ounce was the standard measure way back when.

I have stories, but they would be even more boring than my usual fare.

I'm just saying... in California, you had to be pretty dumb to get turned down for a card... I'm talking DUMB. Which is why you had enough "patients" to support over 1000 dispensaries, yet this isn't a good group to draw some conclusions from???
