BVG combing in a little Just For Men on the stache. I'm pumped for the presser.

Just the fact that this guy is going after every DT possible makes me excited for him to be in charge of the D. Diaco was the man, but my one complaint about his recruiting (and I know its shared on here) was his perplexing lack of offers to DTs.

Lack of Dt offers?

+ those ends who can move Inside

We just strike out a lot on DTs

Good read. It will be interesting to see if BVG utilizes the 3/4 over or 3/4 under set more. Not to be lost in all this is what is happening behind the defensive line. Will he run man coverage on one side and zone on the other side at times? Will he check off the blitz on one side and come "under" on the other? What makes an aggressive defense successful is how much can they show one thing and check to something else before the ball is snapped. Confusing the QB allows the line more time to pressure the QB or split the gap to get to the runner. I thought BD tipped his hand every play making the defense much less effective.

To incorporate that style of complex defense takes a while. BVG's first year at Georgia was a struggle until the last third of the season. Then it appeared the defense started "getting" it. At Auburn, they never did get it and quit on BVG the last half of the season. It may take him a while at ND to implement his scheme so patience may be needed. But if the players ever get it, the defense could be outstanding.

I really did not follow the cluster that was 2012 for Auburn, but maybe you did. My question would be how much sway did BVG actual have over the defense? Chizik, being a defense guy, may have had his hands in the D. Just wondering how that compared to his time in Georgia, where Richt was coming from the offensive side of the football and potentially gave BVG more autonomy.

I don't mean to speak for Tommy, but from what he, (supported by others) have said is that it doesn't matter. The players didn't get it and instead of working, they kind of just laid down and quit. An eff-you so to speak.

The culture was so atrocious there that without someone strong and trusted like Malzahn there, no one was going to accomplish anything.

Sampson said something the other day that I thought was interesting and accurate. Something to this affect. A bad HC can make a good assistant coach terrible and a good HC can make a good assistant coach great. Seems to apply here.

Does it also apply that a great assistant can make a bad HC good? (Cough, Gus & Chizik, Cough)

I think BVG got caught up in a whirlwind on the Plains and never really got his feet settled. I would guess Chizik had a lot of input being a former DC but can't say for sure. I do know that the players never really caught on to BVG's system. That was easily spotted as he was very animated on the sidelines trying to will them into the correct alignment, reads, etc. Being a Bama fan I enjoyed it but seeing BVG work his tail off and not be supported was discouraging - even for me. It wasn't his effort or coaching that caused that timebomb to explode. If given the time, I think he can make the Irish defense very good.

Haha, no thats called Cam Newton. That would make sense. With the season that Auburn had its pretty easy to see that Chizik is just downright awful and Malzahn was the gem the entire time.

Should have explained what I meant. I've always wanted us to stockpile the d-line (was and still am annoyed about Schutt). I would gladly take 3 DTs a year, wastes of scholarships be damned. Seemed like Diaco was all about getting the studs and if we whiffed, then it was on to next year. I could be wrong, maybe Diaco would've started offering more DTs around this time too, but it didn't really seem that way.

I hope the stache has a separate buyout clause.

Uhhhh think it's mostly VanGorder centric. Under Armour announcement came yesterday as expected. I don't know when/if they will make a big fuss and/or unveil things.

Golic Jr. tweeted something about Denbrock getting promoted to OC. Can't get on twitter from work if anyone wants to share it in the "Replacing Martin" thread. Interested to see if that makes the conference as well.

@MGolicJR57: Love this. RT @ObserverSports: RT @schadjoe: Fully expect Mike Denbrock to be promoted to OC at Notre Dame

Declined to divulge 3-4 vs. 4-3 when asked about schematics - rather pointed to evaluating talent on hand and implementing schemes to play to your players strengths.
