Today is meaningful for TCU only. Same for SC last night. Bringing average teams like Tulane and PSU don't improve the product. Pure money grab.
Every other sport in college has a playoff. Why when FBS football gets one is it a money grab? The bowl games were all about money.

The best part of college football is rivalries, not the regular season. You like the rivalry games not the fact that they are played in October versus December. OSU - Michigan is important in a 2 team, 4 team, and 12 team playoff. 12 team has potential for more, higher stakes rivalry games. Nobody looks back and says that Alabama - Georgia game in the regular season was better than the playoff game.

Are you sitting down?

Bama is in too when KState wins today

I was just talking about this with my friends. If KState wins today the committee is going to look at Bama. Outside of UGA and Michigan it’s a total toss up.

As one of my high school coaches used to say “basketball is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport!!!!”.

So there’s that fundamental difference.

I personally miss the old bowl season craziness.

Give me a chance to host a playoff game in ND stadium over a conference championship game any day.

Swarbrick was part of the group that put this 12 team plan together. He understood the realities of the situation and made sure ND was positioned to have a fair and probably better than most shot at making the playoffs.

The best part of college football for me is that any team can come out of nowhere and beat any other team.

That along with all the crazy stuff like returned field goal attempts for TD’s, a converted WR moved to QB mid game who manages to pull out the upset that you basically never see in the pros is what makes college football special for myself.

Do they not collide in FCS, D2, D3, NAIA, etc…They all have playoffs.

UGA, Michigan, and OSU are locks.

TCU needs to win.
Hopefully the committee makes a OSU/Michgan rematch in week one.

Agree. The rivalries and big games are the best. The Clemson win this year along with the storming of the field wasn’t tainted because we already had two losses and were out of the playoff picture. If anything, added chances for postseason play will make more games for more teams more meaningful. Bring on a home playoff game in South Bend in December!

You are correct. Looks like the field is now set regardless of outcome today. The only thing that can change is the seeding. Does this look right?

OSU 4 no matter what
Michigan can take 1 if UGA loses
TCU can take 1 if UGA and scUM loses (not even sure about this one)

I think the committee would probably do everything possible to not have a Michigan Ohio State rematch in the final four. So if Georgia did lose, I could see TCU going to four just for the sake of the playoff.

Sure.

I think asking those players to play a bunch of additional games is kinda stupid as well in that I’m failing to see how that benefits the “student” athlete. Maybe I’m just naive?

Also, it looks as though some of the teams in those divisions play as few as eight regular season games.

You’re not winning a championship without playing 14 or 15 games in those divisions.

Ok.

I was just going off the win loss totals I saw from the brackets listed from a quick google search.

This applies more to NFL than it does college ball because of more parity in the NFL and fewer teams. There were plenty of ranked vs ranked games this year for us to watch.

The best part of college football is the regular season, and the 12 team playoff dilutes it. Just trying to mimic NFL and it's allllll about $$$
and it’s increasingly matriculating down to the high school and even youth levels.

Seems to me like the raising Todd Marinovich approach (which is completely fucking insane to me) has become increasingly common and acceptable.

Maybe it was the Covid year. Last 5 champions:

FCS
14-1
16-0
15-0
14-1
14-1

D2
14-0
13-2
14-0
14-1
15-0

You get the picture. 12 team playoff would mean a 16 or 17 game season for the champs. Definitely a lot of games.

For the past 15 years a bunch of those rivalries have been completely meaningless. Miami - FSU, USC - UCLA, Mich - Ohio St, Georgia - FL. College football regular season gets such strong numbers because of the urgency. No team in college should have a shot at the title with 3 losses.

For me and ND aside, I turned sharply more towards college over NFL when the Giants went 8-8 and won the Super Bowl. Same thing with college hoops. Regular season is 100% irrelevant.

You could argue that more games will be meaningful in the regular season with expanded playoffs. Our game vs USC would have been bigger for us if we were on the brink of making the playoffs. Same with UCLA the week before.

Your argument is that it was better when our entire season was meaningless after starting 0-2. I think it’s more exciting when you have a chance to go on a run and make the playoffs.

Yes, I want to see elite teams over average teams in a playoff. If ND loses week 1 to OSU, they still have a shot at the playoff. When they lost week 2 to Marshall, they deserve to be fighting at year end for a lower tier bowl. There are no victims here. Everyone makes their own bed.

Having 3-4 losses and "going on a run in the playoffs" is for the NFL, and I don't want college football to mimic the NFL. I want the regular season to matter. Just my preference.

But...group of 5 deserves its own playoff.

I don’t understand why conference champions need auto bids. All it protects is the random year where a shit team happens to pull an upset. That’s a team that doesn’t deserve to make it anyways.

Once they get rid of divisions in most conferences you’d think at worst it’s a 3 loss team like a KSU. It won’t be 4 loss Big Ten West teams like currently.
