I don’t understand why conference champions need auto bids. All it protects is the random year where a shit team happens to pull an upset. That’s a team that doesn’t deserve to make it anyways.
Exactly. If the "conference champ" is 8-4 it doesn't mean they're one of the best 4 or best 8 in the country. It just means they're the best team in a shit conference.

Riley has requested $15 million in NiL funding from the pool for the football program. He also is asking for new facilities including an artificial surface practice field (don't remember if he wanted indoor facility). I guess that means their current practice field is natural grass. Sounds like he will get everything he is requesting, and the plan is to build it where Dedeaux Field is currently located and move the baseball stadium elsewhere.

That’s like 3-5 years out minimum for a capital project of that scale in California.

Purdue is going toe-to-toe with Michigan so far tonight. They’re 8-4. The Big Ten is not a shit conference. If they pull out a win, would they deserve a playoff spot in the 12-team system?

Guessing the people running the NiL program know who to payoff to speed it up. Heck, it probably takes 3-5 years for permits in Cali these days.

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Depending on the scale of the project there’s all kinds of planning and permit reviews that should kick in.

If someone had a bunch of free time and money they could delay all those facility upgrades for several years.

You could argue that more games will be meaningful in the regular season with expanded playoffs. Our game vs USC would have been bigger for us if we were on the brink of making the playoffs. Same with UCLA the week before.

Your argument is that it was better when our entire season was meaningless after starting 0-2. I think it’s more exciting when you have a chance to go on a run and make the playoffs.
There’s a possibility it trickles into recruiting as well. I would imagine some recruits being in the playoffs or some sort of postseason might be a factor. Instead of all the 5 star guys going to the top 3/4 teams every year hopefully it spreads out.

You might wanna revisit this at the end of the game. Michigan is undefeated and has beaten PSU and OSU. If Purdue wanted a shot at a playoff, they should have beaten the powerhouses of Syracuse, Wiscy, and Iowa.

1) College football always has been and always will be cyclical. Bama will take a big step back when Saban retires, same as when Carroll left USC and when Meyer left Florida.

2) Eite aren't going to go to worse schools to get to this "playoff" to get their clocks cleaned. "Oh man, I can't wait to sign with UCF so i can get to the playoff and get drubbed by 50 by Powerhouse ABC." Not buying that.

Michigan should've lost to Illinois at home and played nobody of consequence OOC.

Purdue lost to Syracuse, who we smoked in the Dome.

There have been a lot of teams go toe-to-toe with Michigan. Probably a few they should have lost. I think it would be interesting to see what happens in an OSU rematch. Besides Georgia, teams 2, 3 and 4 look like the the worst 2, 3 and 4 I have ever seen.

I wouldn’t bet on Michigan to beat Ohio State twice.

But they might be more willing to attend ND or even maybe Oregon. I’m saying it might be “a” factor, not THE factor. Which might allow other teams beside whatever too dawg or dawgs of the decade may be. Kids want to go to Bama to play for a title (among other things). If they can essentially play for a title at their “dream school”, why not?

We don’t play one additional game we play the same exact amount. You are wanting to play less games than the entire rest of the country.

We get to the second round with 13 games in this format. Bye teams get to the second round with, wait for it, 13 games.
I think the difference being a team in a Conference chanpionship game could lose their 13th game and they still have a chance for a championship, and in some instances winning that 13th game could be what even gets them into the playoff and gives them a chance for a championship. Both are distinct advantages for their 13th game versus NDs 13th game being win or go home.
Conferences existed long before they started playing conference championship games, and some teams in the lesser conferences go a whole season without playing a legit top 25 team, but yet can be rewarded for winning that 13th game. I understand both sides of the argument, my point is the 13th game being a playoff win or go home versus the 13th being a conference championship for some school that played two directional schools that season are not apples to apples.

There is just no way they will let ND play one less game than any other school in order to win a championship. Can’t say I disagree. You can make all the arguments about SOS and whatever else but it doesn’t matter.

Wouldn’t every team that made the playoffs but didn’t play in their conference championship game (see Ohio state this year) have that same opportunity every year???

They would be in the playoffs but could not be in the top 4, meaning no bye. That’s why ND would not get a bye as well. Only played 12 games.

Michigan hasn't been as dominant as Georgia has, but my point was Purdue has nothing to cry about if they beat Michigan. Don't lose 3 out of 12 games lol

It might, but between NIL and portal I see the rich getting richer before I see more parity. Just my two cents.

3-5 years for the environmental impact studies alone in the state of California. I’m sure there’s some species of insect that would be affected by the artificial turf.

Nobody is suggesting Purdue will be crying to not be in the CFP.
I certainly wasn’t. 8-4 Purdue doesn’t “deserve” a playoff spot. But in the 12-team system they probably get one. (They’d be either the 6th or 7th highest-ranked conference champ but with a win over Michigan I’d bet they jump to 6th.)

Damn, that’s wild. ND is not going to keep up with $15mil/year as things currently stand. They only paid Addison and Williams like $2mil between them when they transferred to USC.

That’s wild how much talent that’d pay for on a yearly basis.

The reason to give champs autobids and byes is to incentivize playing in conference championship games.

Right now, there is virtually no incentive. USC played themselves out of a playoff spot, TCU might’ve too.

If they lose, which they probably will, you're telling me 1 game would separate them from playing in the CFB at 9-4 as big ten champ or 8-5 in the Gasparilla Bowl?

Again, you do realize the B1G is expanding and divisions are likely going away? You’re using 2022 Purdue as an argument against a future situation that won’t exist

The 12 team playoff Big Ten spot will likely be at worst a 2 loss team from an highly name brand institution. Don’t worry about 2022 Purdue.
