“Yet, scheduling complications and College Football Playoff implications were at the root of the series’ demise, according to those familiar with the negotiations.

The latest round of discussions among administrators at each school fizzled over the last two weeks — a stunning about-face. In fact, the two programs were on the verge of finalizing a two-year extension of their agreement in late November, with USC agreeing to host Notre Dame next season on the traditional date after Thanksgiving and the Irish hosting in 2027.

However, USC officials determined that the game date was not ideal considering past decisions from the CFP selection committee in punishing schools for losses, especially those late in the season.

The latest discussions between Trojans athletic director Jen Cohen and ND athletic director Pete Bevacqua centered around a possible game next year on Week Zero, though that did not materialize. The two administrators have agreed to work to restart the series as soon as 2030, those with knowledge of their talks told Yahoo Sports.”

Glad ND could get a solid opponent on short notice.

But if this is a sign that the USC series is no longer annual...I have some concerns.

Glad I went to the USC rain game this year.

Given that we play three Big Ten teams in September of next year (one of which is Purdue), I would imagine it's still possible we swap in USC for one of those. But not a good sign, here.

Edit: Never mind. Pussies.

USC's schedule is brutal next year. They'll finish 7-5 most likely. BYU could be 11-1 or 10-2 pretty easily. Playing BYU will bolster the schedule a bit and will be a better win than USC at least on paper.

Edit:
USC plays @Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon
BYU plays ND, @Utah, next toughest game is @TCU or Iowa State at home?

Imagine the backlash ND would have faced if they had even remotely FLOATED the idea of getting out of the series when they were getting raw dogged by the Pete Carroll teams in the 2000s. This is wholly unbelievable from a big picture point of view, but not at all surprising from that program and it's leadership

yeah, they are definitely trying to corner us into joining conference. Call me a tinfoil conspiracy theorist. It seems clear to me.

The Big Ten, yes. USC, no.

Remember the Apple Cup and Civil War were also impacted by the Big Ten move. Both have since seen rescheduling to start the season. If USC wanted to play, we would be playing. They aren’t cornering us on behalf of the B1G. They just don’t want to lose. If we were Washington St/Oregon State equivalent, they would play the game.

Im preparing for my USC roommate to send me a long long long text complaining about the USC athletics department not wanting to play ND

USC: we don't want that smoke

BYU: Just give me all the smoke you have. Wait … I worry what you heard was, 'Give me a lot of smoke. ' What I said was, give me all the smoke you have.

Id like to think they are capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. Maybe it helps USC's schedule (but certainly a win is beneficial too), but USC and everyone in the Big Ten gets a share of our $$$$$$$ if we have to join. Are you not understanding the windfall of getting ND into your conference? Just from common sense we are worth multiple bluebloods. there is no comparison.
If conferences just start refusing to play us, we have zero leverage as far as it appears. I'm a dummy so I have no clue how to respond, but I wish we had an AD that had a plan.
