if we go this year with out getting one then next year we will be starting at least one freshman

How do you figure? Thats not true at all. Look at the roster and remember that Harrison is eligible for another year.

Dan Mccarthy- Junior
Zeke Motta- Sophmore
Jamoris Slaughter- Junior
Chris Salvi- Junior

Now explain how a freshman would be starting next year?

He means in 2012 because he is assuming the three juniors would graduate and none would be back for a 5th year.

He said if we dont get one "this year" we will be starting a freshman next year. I didnt get 2012 out of that. Anyway, I dont think Lyons or Aldridge are Irish this year. Im not sure whats going on with B.M but that would be a nice pick-up. I still have hopes for Christian French for this year, and him possibly playing at a safety spot. He has the speed and size.

Hardy and Farley are both being recruited at corner, but either of them could step up into a safety role. I think Hardy might be one of the better HS safety in the country.

I agree but he will have to really step up if he wants to take a spot away from 5th year senior Harrison Smith or senior J Slaughter. I dont think there is any doubt he could crack the 2 deep, but that doesn't mean we "have" to play him barring injury. Safety play has been questionable at best this year so Eilar will have his shot.

Right he wasn't clear at all. But its what he meant to say because the other scenario doesn't make sense as all the new recruits would be frosh... so no matter how many we recruited it wouldn't effect the situation.

Anyways, I see multiple recruits that could play safety as necessary and I personally don't know if we will get either Aldridge or Lyons. I feel next year we will put the full court press on safeties and QBs.

And DTs. We will be in serious need of 2-3 DTs next year. I also hope to see, not just numbers but a serious upgrade of talent in the secondary.

Re: safeties. I'm seeing Motta really coming on. By next year, I think/hope he'll be a slobberknocker. So we have at least three "serviceable" or better safeties "in stable".

Dropped:
DE Aaron Lynch

With Lynch decommitting, the staff will likely focus on another DE

Troy Niklas can play multiple positions
Brennan Scarlett has kept in contact with the staff and is similar to Ethan Johnson
Ray Drew could also pop back up but is a long shot

LB needs to be filled as well
IShaq Williams is a high priority and elite target
Christian French is a project but is a freak athlete

Safet is a huge need
Lyons seems to have moved on. There seems so be no other options at Safety at this moment

Just posted it in the Councell thread, but Ben Councell took a visit to South Carolina this weekend for the Tennessee game. Maybe it was just sight-seeing or maybe not. Might be wise to start looking at yet another OLB.

I hate to say it guys and gals, but I see a couple more guys that might jump ship. What I thought was shaping up to be a stellar defensive class (best in years), is now looking to have fallen apart. Just seems like we can't catch a break these days.

This has now got to be the number one priority for the staff. Kelly can turn this program around so long as recruiting doesn't just collapse like a house of cards. My concern is that we might see a stampede for the exits if he loses another one or two big names. They need to be all over Tuitt right now making sure he's solid.

Agreed. Kelly clearly knows it too.

Counsell is not going anywhere. He did not take a visit to S Carolina. There are no questions or concerns with Counsell. Rabasa also had an awesome visit and was able to meet Tim Brown. He seems to be very sure of his verbal.

lynch

Before everybody freaks out maybe A. Lynch realized he was not going to beat out Kap,Prince, Kona, Filer,Fleming, or Johnson next year, realistically would be special teams at best, a friend of mine who has seen him play says his body already maxed out. I prefer2 or 3 star players with upside-rather than a 5 star like Sam Young. Thats how Nebraska does it!!! Thats how Boise does it. Its called passion for the game, not entitlement.

Not me. I'll take 5 stars every day of the week. Manti Te'o and Michael Floyd are our 2 best players, and they were 5 star recruits. You win with talent. Now, that doesn't mean that you don't take guys you think are going to be studs just b/c some dorks watching film think he's only a 3 star. Not at all. But when you have a guy like an Aaron Lynch, you take him all day every day. And Lynch didn't have to beat out KLM nor EJ...he only had to beat out their back-ups who basically haven't done a thing all year. And Lynch is bigger than most linemen we have already. So if he is maxed out (which I highly doubt), that means he's still bigger than most our guys.

The best of both worlds is 4 and 5 star guys that have passion. That's how USC won in the early-mid 00's, and that's how FL won this decade. The problem with both those programs now is that they have the 5 star guys with entitlement issues. We seem to have 3 and 4 and star guys who weren't developed and too many who have little passion for winning. They might think they have it, but it certainly doesn't show up on gamedays. But BK is bringing in those guys that have the passion to win and the work ethic to get it done Sunday-through-Friday. If these guys are talented, I fully believe they'll be put in position to win...

Agree to some extent, but out of all our recent so called 4 or 5 star players the only ones who wound up being great in my opinion were in fact Teo, Floyd, and Clausen(after 3 years). Lots of so called highly touted recruits just did not pan out or were average at best-just some examples- Aldridge, S. Young, George West?Tyler Stockton?(maybe later we hope) Ethan Johnson, Duval K-average so far. Darin Walls -average- I could go on and on.

What about guys with absolute fire and passion when in college-Zibby, Jeff Sam...,Trevor Laws, Brady Quinn- probably not 5 stars but NOBODY in the country would have traded these guys when in college.

Nebraskas QB currently who is lighting up everybody had 2 schollies in D_1, no stars, similar to Kellen Moore at Boise. Beware of the "star system", it has not correlated well at ND over past 4 years. You got to give me that.

BMT - we are on the same page. Not all 5 *'s pan out. Floyd, Rudolph, Clausen, Teo have for Notre Dame. But we can list a whole page of kids who have not.

Check out Oregon's roster. Holy F. Not one 5*. Look at this year's class - Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com 2011 Oregon Commitments

It's possible. NDOM - stay out of this.

1st off there are a whole lot more 3 stars than 5 stars to begin with so the list of succesful 3 stars will obviously be longer. Ratings may be subjective but class rankings have proven to be fairly good at determining success on the field

Your list of players should have an asterisk BMT

Aldridge had injuries that changed the course of his career
S. Young 4 year starter
George West pretty sure he was a 3 star
Tyler Stockton 4 star in his secind season, its a bit too soon to judge
Ethan Johnson a very solid player, 4 star
Duval Kumara came froma very weak year for WR's
Darin Walls has played well 4 star

Zibby was a 4 star
Jeff Sam..., 3 star
Trevor Laws 4 star
Brady Quinn 4 star

u didn't prove anything. The only 5 stars that were mentioned all became stars here except for Aldridge

look at the last couple espn 150 recruits and you will see that a good majority of these people you haven't heard of these past couple of years....yes of course there are those who are the 5*'s that were right on the money, eric berry, floyd, aj green, julio jones etc...but when it comes to notre dame...the exact opposite has happened...out of those top recruiting classes from weis...besides tate, clausen, floyd, teo who has been dominate???? darrin walls supposed to be the next best thing to sliced bread when you read his scouting report....the small disclaimer at the bottom reads-gets burnt on most plays, arm tackles...are offensive linemen where always high recruits...look how well that turned out for our running game.....at the end of the game...its the kids who have heart, fire and determination to make them better players....people like ishaq(reading his story), cierre w. staying after practice and doing extra work w/ manti that is what we need...bennett jackson on fb stating he isn't happy w/ the way things are and he is going to do something about it...that is the kind of attitude we need! not 5* recruits.....all the skill in the world with no fire=mediocore performance(floyd the 1st couple games of year) now look at him making 1 handed catches, td's etc...

Darrin Walls was a good CB but Gary Gray was supposed to be the stud coming out, i bleieve he was a 5 star on ESPN and has played great. Again IShaq is a high 4 and Cierre Wood was a 5 star most of the year.

You guys keep saying we should develop 3 stars and ignore 5 stars but u keep naming 4 and 5 star studs to prove your point.

How about Samardzija, Calabrese, Darius Walker, Ian Williams. There are some 3 stars for you to prove your points

It is my observation that guys like Gary Gray, once the pros see what he can do when placed within a defense which has a dependable pass rush, will get solidly drafted. The guy's a LOT better than some people are bad-mouthing him.

I apologize as I am a new poster and did not have facts at hand but have since done some research on our "star" recruits.
Its ugly, all of these players were ESPN TOP 150 between 2006-2009
Gary Gray-#13-pretty solid
Kerry Neal#26
Duvak K.#36
Mike Ragone#55--Some of these guys do not even play
Matt Romine#85, Ian Williams#120, Robert Hughes#140, Brian Smith#150
Raeshon Macneil, Konrad Ruland, Zach Frazer, Luke Schmidt, Demetrius Jones, Toryan Smith, Richard Jackson??
Ethan JOhnson, Jamoris Slaughter, Jonas Gray, Deon Walker??, Steve Filer

I will let you judge for yourself if any now in top 150, also, Boise State, TCU, Utah, and Cinncinatti and all service acadamies had ZERO top 150(unless you count Demetrious Jones)
Therefore, I really, really do not get that excited when a recruit or 5 leave-get the RKG replacing him and you have just about the same chance-or better- dont believe me-see above.
