Looks like U of M and ND will be taking a two year break in 2018/19. Wonder who both teams will pick up?

In addition, Michigan and Notre Dame will take a two-year hiatus in their long-standing rivalry during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Both schools intend to resume the rivalry in the years following.

I wonder why they would stop a big rivalry like that for two years... change of scenary, "I think we should see other people for a few years, then come back strong!"

Imo there may be a real chance the series doesn't resume from there... or even make it to 2018

If ND eventually makes a move to another conference it seems part of the deal to staying Indy in football would be to schedule some of the new conference in football (like the proposed Big 12 deal)... I am under the impression this has to happen at some point soon (moving from the Big East) and if it does we will most likely drop one to three of our current 'rivals'... I think Michigan would be one of the very first on the block...

just my opinion... a lot has to happen obviously

This is nothing new. If ND joins the Big12 consider it a dead series, unfortunately.

What will the deal be?
5 games with the Big 12?

IMO- If they stay independent they have to keep SC and Stanford to ensure a game in California every year.
Michigan St is a more traditional rival then Michigan and Purdue is an instate rival.
Add Navy, BC, and possibly Pitt you are looking at a National powerhouse of a schedule still.

5 games Big 12
Navy
USC
Stanford
Mich St
Purdue
Pitt
BC

That's tough, but exciting!
Hopefully there's 3-4 lower tiered Big 12 schools in the 5 or it's a freaking murderer's row.

Fixed.

If I never see Michigan again, I'd say good riddance. I do not like Michigan. I "hate" USC in a rival kind of way, which is to say good naturedly. There is nothing good natured about my feelings for Michigan. I think they are bad people, I want bad things to happen to them, and I have no interest in playing them.

With the recent happenings concerning a football playoff, I do not see the Superconference trend continuing. That all depends on the payout schedules, which have not been determined, but there wont be conference tie ins to the four team playoff.

Just my opinion though.

Michigan sucks...

Once we join a conference it'll be over for good. It's not like this is a real historic rivalry or anything.

Do you mean once we change conferences in non-football sports? Because with the new playoff format, all signs point to Notre Dame staying independent in football for the foreseeable future.

agreed... but I still feel ND has to change things overall... the Big East still seems to be dying in general...

I think they were dying because of the conference realignment that has been going on because of Superconferences. Now that we know that conferences wont have tie-ins to the playoff, teams will only have money to worry about. If that all falls into place (I believe that teams like Boise, BYU, etc will champion this), then I don't see any reason why teams will want to continue leaving the Big East. Especially if they have a good bball program.

Interesting topic that is playing out around us though.

Given ND's history with Michigan I would be insanely happy to get rid of three pieces of crap. Hopefully we will be a team everyone wants to play too making the rejection even more satisfying.

Man why the hate? UM/ND is always a great game. And to say there is no rivalry here, you are mad. UM teaches ND, student beats down teacher, teacher has UMAD face and bans ND. Good history.

I went looking for the thread. Right now all I have is my phone. I don't have my computer. About a year ago someone posted what um did while nd was trying to get started. After reading that article my views on um went downhill bad.

I'd like to end to come with a W though... if ND never played them again starting today, I'd feel cheated #f'ing Denard Robinson.

JadeBrecks: Thanks a million for posting that article. In fact, I am sending you a million VBucks in appreciation.

I was a history major in undergraduate, and have continued to read a lot of history in the past 30 years or so. But, I never knew this.

I've never really liked Michigan, either, but only in the way you don't like any rival--in a good-natured way. Reading this history has taken away the "good-natured" part. I've always wondered why there seemed to be so much vitriolic hatred towards that place (I don't even want to flatter them by using the word "school") on this board. Now, I get it. Place me solidly in the ranks of haters of those scum-sucking hillbillies who probably sit around and snack on the ***-end of menstruating opposums and think they are eating gourmet.

I guess if we all got over the ending of the Catholics versus Convicts series, we can bear this as well.

I hope you're right I'm tired of the big ten and its refs and all that goes with it. Notre Dame can carry on nicely without michigan. Wont miss this game in the least.

I guess I have the opposite view of most... No doubt, I am one of the most self proclaimed scUM haters in the irishenvy family. But I love playing this rival. It has been the most important game to me personally for the last 6-7 years. 2 of the most prestegious progrmas in the country playing early in the season. These games have been awfully epic lately and granted the last 3 years tragically should have been our wins, i still want the chance to watch ND whoop on some skunk bear every September. I would gladly drop all of our other big 10 opponents off the schedule if it meant we could keep the annual meeting against scUM.

Absolutely not, I sincerely hope this series isn't dropped. I can't believe anyone would say this isn't a real historic rivalry. This dates back to the 1800s with Michigan bringing football to South Bend. Michigan and Notre Dame are #1 and #2 in all time wins, and #2 and #1 with the greatest fight songs respectively. Theres plenty to draw on for this one, but ultimately both of these teams always seem to emotionally "up" for this game, it's a true rivalry.

After USC and Michigan State who would you say our biggest rival is? Not Navy, although I will always appreciate their contribution to bail out the university in WWII. Boston College? No, despite my detest for the Eagles and the '93 game, this rivalry is pretty young and more often than not it seems to be less competitive and more one sided for either team. Purdue? Don't make me laugh. I would almost argue that Michigan is a greater rival than Michigan State, but there has been too many years of inactivity with the Wolverines.

Agree, nobody on this board hates them more than I do, but this game always means more to me than any other. Having said that, eff em'!

Michigan and U$C are the ones I consider our rivals. Navy is not a rival, but it is a game we need to keep for as long as the football gods will allow. gotta keep the UM game, they are recruiting rivals as well. I would rather get rid of MSU than UM, though I would like to keep both.
