Still hard to not to feel disappointed with what happened today, but it does have some major implications for the 2012 season and 2013 class.

1. WR's are again going to be thin. We knew last year Floyd was the beast, but now, we are truly a platoon effort. Neal is still a possibility, but we can't count on him. So, as it looks, we are talking about (going off memory here) Goodman, Jones, Toma, maybe riddick, Daniel Smith, Daniels, Ferg, Brown, Mathias and maybe Russell. We really need Daniel Smith and DD to step up as well as one of the freshman.

2. TE. Tyler coming back sealed our fate at this position from a recruiting standpoint. For the 2012 season, I am willing to wager we see multiple TE sets with Ben K and Welch. This will allow for more running and PA passing, but will also be needed to help with the WR problem. Recruiting for 2013 should call for one stud TE and possibly even two.

3. QB. Homerun with Gunner. Kelly likes his QB's to have at least a year in the system. With the WR situation what it is, the need for a mobile QB just went up with the loss of Greenberry. I look for Golson or Hendrix to get the nod here to help keep defenses honest. We saw late in the year what happens when the offense is predictible with Tommy.

4. OL - The loss of Decker hurt, but was the least troubling loss in this recruiting class. Stanley is a beast and Harrell looks like a project. 2013 becomes a huge recruiting need and we should look to get 4 or 5, depending on how things shape up during the year. This could be our strong point in recruiting for 2013 given the regional talent and their love of ND.

5. RB - Wood could very well be done after this year, so it was a good thing Amir and Mahone are on board. Curious to see what happens with Amir's petition to play in 2012. It would be a big score if we could get him. I would not be surpised to see Russell play in the slot if we don't get Neal. GAIII is a fun question mark at this point. He has some serious talent but I wonder if we gets a look at WR now, especially if Amir is able to play in 2012. Roberson and McDaniels add depth, but their production going forward remains to be seen. For 2013 recruiting, two backs are needed and Ty Isaac would be a mjor coup along with Green. Homeruns are needed for 2013.

6. DL - The addition of Jones and Day would normally be reason to celebrate in past years, but fans are spoiled after the haul of 2011. KLM, Lynch, Tuitt, Nix, Kona, Springman, Chase and others will be vital in 2012. I hope Day and Jones don't have to see the field, or at least one redshirt to help with roster mgt. I think another 2-3 is needed in 2013, especially another NT. Where Niklas ends up will be fun to watch.

7. OLB - The haul last year was downright silly. Romeo this year offers up some serious upside, but he will need a year or two to catch up physically. Shembo needs to have a big year and hopefully we see Ishaq breakout now that he is familiar with the scheme. Guys like Spond and Council are also waiting in the weeds. I would expect 1-2 for 2013, with mr smith being the top target. We can't forget the impact Slaughter has in certain packages either. Perhaps we saw a glimpes into the defensive future during the bowl game and some of the guys mentioned above move inside if guys like Slaughter, Badger or Baratti move down to a OLB position, ala LSU.

8. ILB - Grace has been the only true ILB recruit of the Kelly era, thou Rabassa has been rumored to be slated for that position. Manti returning for 2012 is huge and Kendall Moore is waiting to break out. Carlo and Fox return as well. The position is solid, but improvement in pass coverage is needed. I would expect ILB to be a big focus for 2013's class.

9. CB - The loss of Darby/Wright/Poole/Standifer cannot be overstated. Tee is a beast and could start from Day 1. Numbers at the position aren't awful, but ND needs three players of Jackson, Brown, Atkinson & Lo Wood to breakout. 75% hit rate seems a bit daunting. I will be curious to see what happens with Turner and Hardy. Turned has reportedly run a 4.5 and played some corner this year. He has some decent size as well. Hardy is a wildcard given his injury. I would expect CB to again be a priority in 2013 and I look for ND to go after at least 3.

10. S - Motta and Slaughter return from last years group. McCarthy and Hardy are back as well. The numbers in the class are pretty good, with Schumate, Baratti, CJ, Turner and Badger. FS is a concern in 2013 and with the need of CB, one has to wonder what happens to Turner and Hardy. Baratti could outgrow safety, but either way needs to time as his fundemetals defensively need work. Prossie has huge upside, but has some technique issues that need resolved. ND needs to have Motta turn a corner like Harrison Smith did for 2012. Look for at least one FS, maybe two for 2013 recruiting and 1-2 SS depending on what players are moved around.

In a nut shell, the misses in recruiting at CB and WR, as well as the perception that the Armsteads slipped thru ND's fingers, leave a bitter taste this signing day. No one recruit ever makes or breaks a team, but the misses at CB and WR could hurt ND in 2012.

The real intersting thing will be how the change in OC as well as the WR situation influences the QB situation for next year. Will we see a more running attack in 2012?

On D, the front seven is loaded with young talent. Pressure can hide secondary holes, but the holes could be big if things to progress quickly. Jalen brown is supposed to be a stud in the making. We really need him to be.

The schedule is tough next year with games against USC, OU, Mich, Stanford, Miami and MSU. ND needs to win a few games it shouldn't, particularly the UM game. That game will be needed to generate some positive momentum and recuiting buzz.

A big 2013 recruiting class is now needed. Kelly knows it starts with winning. Another 8-5 year might be problematic for him and the 2013 recruiting class. Needless to say, the 16 man class of 2012 fell short of expectations, but there is no doubt talent there. But the focus won't be on who is there, it will be on who isn't, as the fanbase is beginning to grow impatient with Kelly.

I agree wtih some But i think our Line backers are still going to have a problem covering. so don't be surprised if Hardy or Schumate get some time a saftey and Let slaughter be the roamer since he has understanding what the coaches want from the position.

I agree with most of what you said.
But this is the first I have heard of Amir petitioning for this upcoming season? Is that even a slight possibility? How could he play after transferring?

He is petitioning on grounds of hardship since his father switched jobs from the 49ers to Purdue. Who knows what will happen, but something is bound to go in ND's direction sooner or later.

I believe that there is updated info on the petition in his thread. They said it was something that was talked about nothing ever cam out of it. But with his dad taking on a 6 salary job doubt he would get if he did go through with it.

I think we might see some surprise 5th year slots going to some depth linebackers this year. Anthony McDonald and David Posluszny are both eligible and should at least provide some Special Teams and Depth bodies. Especially if the plan is to Red-Shirt Romeo this coming season.

If Teo decides to enter the Draft. You almost got to keep one of those two.

That's pretty good with a good QB....

We really have been spoiled, Also we are running it more with Riddick, Wood, Atkinson, and Mcdaniel which is a pretty explosive back field.

There is one name on that entire list that is a proven game braker, and that is Wood. Atkinson is at KR, but not a RB yet. Riddick? Nope. McDaniel? Nope. What about WR. None there either. Eifert is awesome but I wouldn't call him a game breaker. To keep defenses honest next year, we need a QB that can run. Without it, we are not going to be scoring much against the defenses we have to face in the bigger games.

I think Golson can bring a whole new dynamic to the offense. I mean he can run and throw. Tommy really struggled to do either consistently at times.

Speaking of turning the page does any know how many scholarships we will potentially have for next years class? My friend said 24 which seems pretty high when the talk was we wouldn't have nearly that many before.

we need a rb other than Wood to step up. Not because Wood isn't good enough, but because I can't remember the last time we didn't get our most productive RB hurt for a few games during the season.

24 sounds about right. We wouldn't have had that many had we filled out our recruiting class this year, but since we left about 6 scholarships on the table, we can sign a much bigger class next year. I guess that's one of the few positives you can take away from NSD.

We'll have 10/12 WRs for 2012, so we're not exactly thin. Unless Carlisle's waiver gets granted (not likely), I don't see Riddick moving back to WR. Look for 2-3 WRs in 2012 depending on if we land Neal.

Given Martin's comments about 2-RB sets and an increased emphasis on the run, you're probably right that we'll be seeing lots of 2-TE sets as well. Unless J. Golic somehow ends up getting a 5Y (no 5Y is impossible after this class), we'll be gunning for at least 2 TEs.

We're not as thin at OL as many here seem to think. We'll have 14 for 2012, which isn't bad. Assuming Martin and Watt return for a 5Y (likely), we'll only need 3-4 OL to hit ideal depth.

Roberson and McDaniels add depth, but their production going forward remains to be seen. For 2013 recruiting, two backs are needed and Ty Isaac would be a mjor coup along with Green. Homeruns are needed for 2013.

We're actually overloaded at RB right now (7/6), and that's assuming Russell starts his career at WR. Wood could leave early if he has a monster year, but it's unlikely. As I mentioned early, I think the only way Riddick moves back to WR is if Carlisle's waiver is granted. That seems very unlikely right now, so look for Wood and Riddick to get the lion's share of our carries in 2013.

DL's in good shape for 2012, but we'll need 3-4 new recruits next cycle to return to ideal depth. I'm really hoping Spond, Councell, and/or Baratti step up so Niklas can make a permanent move to DL.

Perhaps we saw a glimpes into the defensive future during the bowl game and some of the guys mentioned above move inside if guys like Slaughter, Badger or Baratti move down to a OLB position, ala LSU.

Cat looks great. Dog is an unknown. From a numbers standpoint, we're doing OK. Will need 1-2 OLB next cycle depending on whether Niklas moves to DL.

ILB is stacked. McDonald probably returns for a 5Y now with all the extra space we have, which means we'll be 8/8 for 2012. IIRC, Rabasa's status as an ILB isn't "rumored"; that's what he plays. I expect Fox to step up and take over as the clear #1 WILB; this will be one of our strongest units in 2013. We'll need 2-3 ILB recruits next cycle in order to hit ideal depth, depending on whether Calabrese gets a 5Y.

I would expect CB to again be a priority in 2013 and I look for ND to go after at least 3.

When we say "Depth at X position is scary"; we usually mean that the starter is good/ OK, but there's very little proven quality behind him. Our CB depth isn't scary in that way; all of our 5 CBs are pretty well equal as far potential impact in 2013. Brown, Jackson, J. Atkinson, and Wood are all 3:s: guys without much experience, and ironically, the most experienced of that group (Wood) is probably the least likely to start given his lack of athleticism.

What the group lacks in star power, it more than makes up for with serious athleticism. This will be a real test for the coaching staff; if our CBs play beyond their experience level, we'll be well-positioned to exceed expectations for 2013.

Really overloaded here. 9-10/8 depending on whether you count Baratti as a SS or an OLB. We're in good shape for 2012, but much like CB last year, it will be important to start building depth in preparation for the loss of Slaughter and Motta.

CB will be a likely weakness next year, but I think Jackson, Brown, and J. Atkinson are really going to surprise some people. Those guys are serious athletes for 3:s: recruits. We're otherwise not in bad shape at any position. Just need Golson or Hendrix to step up and our CBs to exceed expectations.

Hard to say with Slaughter's possible move to FS and McCarthy's possible 5Y. In either case, he'll be in the 2-deep somewhere at S, and will likely be in heavy rotation. If he can make a successful move to FS, it'll help our DB depth considerably.

Pass me what you're smoking...Eiffert is the ONLY, I repeat, ONLY guy on that list that is a quality playmaker. Toma?!?!?! Really? Lets see how he stacks up against the corners at the U, USC, or OU...gimmie a break. And you have no idea what you're getting with Daniels or Jones...

And "good QB"?? Who? Tommy Rees?? Thank god we don't have anyone to throw to downfield this year....

I love Wood at RB(I'm eating crow on him) but we are in trouble at WR and the QB, AT BEST, is a toss up.

I'm still pissed about NSD. Our D will be solid up front, weak in the secondary. We'll have some nice moments on offense, but we don't have the playmakers to compete with the good teams we'll play. Gonna go through some MAJOR growing pains on offense.

7-5 is all I'm hoping for. And that isn't going to help our recruiting efforts...because this "We are ND" crap obviously, isn't cutting it anymore.

GO IRISH!

Russell played in the slot in the all star game this year and I thought he did well for himself. I know it was against other high school kids but he got open and went up and attacked the ball in the air. I cant see him not playing in the slot this year when we may very well bring in one or two top running backs in the 2013 class.

I will admit, while I haven't been sour since the USC game, I haven't been completely on the train either. IMO the team last year never looked the same after the USC game. The offense lacked imagination (obviously the QB play didn't help) and the defense suffered from injuries. For whatever reason, something didn't feel right and I hope the turnover of coaches helps regenerate internal excitement.

I hope, scratch that, pray, this defense attacks next year like they did in the first half of the bowl game. It needs to generate some excitement.

The only other hope I have for next year is a Golson or Hendrix adds the running dimension to the offense and it opens things up. But if that doesn't happen, it is going to be a loooooong year.

Keep going.....as naming 3 guys doesn't comfort me at all. And Honey Badger is overrated(as a CB). He got smoked in the Nat title game....and a few fumbles fell his way during the year.

I'll be more impressed if he keeps it up next year.

I clearly stated that this is the exception, not the rule. Just adding to Whiskey's comment that we have some athletic talent at the position, if we can develop it, who knows.

Finally, yea, he sucks. Forget that whole Heisman ballot thing.

Never said he sucks...I just don't think he's as good of a CB as everyone says.

Great return man, can make some plays...but he's not all that good in coverage.
