So, Turn starts next weekend, taking the Walking Dead timeslot. I want to give the show the benefit of the doubt because AMC is producing it. But it just looks dumb. Can't really say anymore more than that.

Am I missing something?

I love the time period...but yeah. I don't think it looks very appealing.

Not to be a dick but what, other than Breaking Bad, has AMC made that is worthy of giving them the benefit of the doubt? I'm curious what you like before I comment on this particular show.

I didn't say I like all their shows, and they don't make a lot of shows. But they tend to be higher quality than network shows. I guess you never heard of Mad Men or the Killing . . .

Again, I wasn't trying to be a dick. I was asking which of their shows you like so I can comment relative to your interests. I've obviously heard of them. I don't like Mad Men very much and I've been told to stay away from the Killing. These are my tastes but I understand that other people have different tastes. I enjoy talking about shows and movies so I would like to discuss this. But, I want to know what you like so I can talk to your interests as opposed to mine. I suspect my personal taste in shows isn't very important to whether or not you're going to watch this show.

The stakes are interesting. I can't think of another show that deals with espionage in the revolutionary era. As with a lot of shows, the writing and acting will be hugely important. We all know how the war ends, so it will be important to write episodes that make the characters just as, if not more, important/interesting than the plot. The acting will have to match this. I think it looks solid and is worth giving a chance. If the story starts to meander, a la, The Walking Dead or Mad Men, or if the acting sucks, a la, The Walking Dead, I wouldn't stick with this for too long.

I want to give the show the benefit of the doubt because AMC is producing it.

AMC gets way more credit that they deserve. They are producing Turn, but people commonly give them credit for Breaking Bad and Mad Men and they were simply not the owners of those shows. Lionsgate owns Mad Men and Sony Pictures owns Breaking Bad.

AMC wanted to get into original programming precisely at the same time Mad Men scripts were being tossed around. HBO and Showtime weren't enthusiastic and AMC took the gamble and went for it. Can you imagine Mad Men on HBO? Holllllllly moley. Dat January Jones. Mad Men was a hit so they greenlit Breaking Bad too.

The biggest difference between 2014 and a decade ago when AMC was getting into original programming is that Netflix has entered the business dead set on dethroning HBO. Now good scripts have to go through HBO/Showtime/Netflix before they get to AMC. That, and the self-inflicted wounds AMC does by being fucking awful at what they do. They ruined The Walking Dead by firing Frank Darabont and gutting the budget for profit margin, and tried to do the same to Mad Men and Breaking Bad. They literally were so dead set on a 6-8 episode final season of Breakin Bad that Vince Gilligan had to go talk to other networks about making the final season, then AMC gave in and Vince got his 16 episodes.

tl;dr AMC sorta blows.

OK, so I watched the first episode. It wasn't half bad. I'll definitely give the show a chance.

Anyone else watch it?

I thought it would be interesting based on the time period alone. Seems good enough with entertaining potential for someone like myself who loves historically based shows/movies, will definitely watch next week.

Matt Berninger from The National sings in the theme song, so that alone will get my attention.

Just started watching this to fill time between TWD and SOA. The first two episodes were so, so depressing.
