Is this kid considered a "high profile transfer?" Because imo, no high profile kid is leaving for a school to become a backup. Coaches are either concerned about current QB room or they're just testing waters on getting a kid to be a depth piece. The latter, I'm afraid, would deter a prospect like Slovis.

I would imagine that Slovis is not looking to be a back up, however, I would imagine ND is being very open/honest about Buchner just like we were with Coan. He is going to play and have a growing role as he progresses.

Yeah Slovis said they called but didn't say what was said/asked. I suspect we checked in with him to see if he's willing to come and compete with the possibility of he being a backup.

And I suspect the answer was no.

Slovis was a first round draft choice and then he wasn't. He needs to go somewhere and throw 300 passes to someone. He should be looking for a team where the coaches are married to the air game and there are a ton of good wideouts to throw to and that ain't ND.

Translation: Tommy said we have 2 young QB you want to come COMPETE for a starting job ? He is looking for a school who promises him a starting spot, no itfs ands, or buts about it. So why not throw a little zinger at ND while talking on a usc podcast.

Reading between the lines, I'm thinking the staff thinks Buchner needs another year to develop. You could see something similar to this year if Slovis were to come on board.

Correct. I'm not tied in like some others on this board, but the chatter from a lot of beat writers is that Pyne isn't good enough to take ND to the next level and that Buchner has a ways to go in the passing game. I don't think anyone believes that what Buchner showed this season warrants any confidence to go in and beat OSU in Columbus 9 months from now. So why not be open to a transfer while Tyler continues to grow and improve?

You sell top players by promoting winning as the primary goal. That as a coaching staff, you are always looking to add more talent to a roster, be it from recruiting classes, transfers, coaching upgrades, facility upgrades, ancillary programs within, etc. You are trying to reach the top and you will not reduce competition to placate egos.

Nice write up from Eric Murtaugh on Buchner’s tape thus far.

Basically, if you took his snaps and extrapolated them to a full season, you’re looking at ~4000 total yards and ~40 TD’s.

Obviously it’s not that simple, since he played quite a bit of garbage time… but it’s pretty encouraging when you consider how much they limited him with the RPO stuff while still getting pretty good yards-per-play production, and also when you take a closer look at some of the throws he made in limited opportunities.

I think a platoon system similar to this year with a guy like Slovis would have been ideal. Going to be near impossible to get a guy to agree to split reps when they left the previous team searching for playing time. Coan was perfect in that respect as the guy truly appreciated ND and accepted he likely wasn't a NFL quarterback.

In my opinion, that is likely what ND proposed to him and Slovis wasn't into it. ND doesn't want to lose Buchner so he is definitely playing a lot next year; you can't put that toothpaste back in the tube.

Rees was asked point blank about Slovis today and his answer was they are very comfortable with their current quarterback roster going forward. So I think the portal is closed to QBs unless it's just a depth guy with no intention of starting.

Slovis I’m not even convinced would have benefited us. Dude is immobile like Coan and hasn’t developed his reads. Does have a better arm but not convinced we would not have just a immobile QB who makes short quick throws which Buchner SHOULD be able to do already.
