I think it's total BS, but I'm pretty sure the student athlete has to prove the other school represents an opportunity their original school does not.

Prevalence of Graduate Transfer in Division I | NCAA.org - The Official Site of the NCAA

Not sure if it's the exact situation here, but I was always of the opinion that you should be totally free to go wherever you wanted if you already had the degree in hand.

its always been the rule. Remember Jeremiah Masoli? He was a Rose Bowl QB for Oregon and took his transfer to finish his career at Ole Miss. He ended up studying for a masters in Parks and Recreation Management because it was a degree he got accepted for and one that Oregon didnt offer. His nickname was Ron Swanson after that haha, he plays in CFL now

Blake Barnett, QB from Arizona St (and ex-Alabama QB and #2 ranked dual QB in 2015) who initially committed to Notre Dame, will now transfer to his third school - U. Southern Florida - where he will pursue his graduate degree. Barnett transferred to ASU to work under OC, Chip Lindsey. Lindsey left ASU for Auburn a few weeks after Barnett arrived. As a backup last year, Barnett threw five passes, completing three. He was at ASU for about a year and a half. He was in competition for the second string job this year. In the offseason he married and has a son.

Speaking of Alabama QB transfers, David Cornwell (#4 ranked QB in '14 Class) transferred to Nevada, where he was named their starting QB prior to the season. With a coaching change, he did not win the starting job and ended up leaving Nevada three days after his first game, asking for his release. I am not sure where he landed or if he is playing football.

Cooper Bateman (#4 ranked QB in '13) transferred to Utah to pursue his graduate degree. His hometown was Salt Lake City. He was a third string QB last year with no stats available.

Jalen Hurts (#4 ranked QB in '16) is in competition with Tua Tagovailoa (#1 ranked QB in '17) for the starting job this year. Hurts is rumored to be considering transferring out of the program. The only other QB on Bama's roster is Mack Jones, #18 ranked QB, who was a signee in the same class as Tua ('17)

Alabama OC, Brandon Kennedy, who was second string, has decided to transfer to pursue his graduate degree elsewhere. He is the second OLman to transfer this month. Dallas Warmack is the other.

Ohio State has had three offensive linemen transfer this offseason (Jack Wohlabaugh, Kevin Feder, Matt Burrell). Two are graduate transfers.

Jamel Dean, Ohio State signee in 2015, who was refused a scholarship by Ohio State on medical grounds, and who transferred to Auburn is now one of their starting DBs. Dean had to sit out a year due to NCAA rules when Ohio State would not release him. Last year he had a season-ending knee injury requiring surgery.

Any one know of any potential 5th year RB's that are looking to transfer. With the smoke going on in the backfield maybe it wouln't hurt to see that out there to help sure up depth.

I looked at this a while ago and I came up w/ BC's John Hillman and Baylor's Terrance Williams. Hillman announced pretty quickly to Maryland or Rutgers. No idea about Williams.

Didn't look after the spring games for new guys.

Just as btw, I'm pretty sure Ohio State just dropped to 86 scholly guys with Wayne Davis Jr departing. And Alabama is at 85 currently. They didn't sign as many as they would have liked and looks like both will probably go into the 2018 season under the limit which rarely happens with Alabama and sometimes Ohio State. Surprising that as of May 11th, Notre Dame would be leading the way in terms of most scholarship guys!

The per-year scholarship limits that were put in place three or four years ago have started to take their toll on grey/blue shirting, as well as backwards-counting scholarships via early enrollment.

Having two guys agree to grey shirt and another 8 enrolling early to count against the previous season doesn't matter as much when the limit for classes is capped at 25 either way, even retroactively. It's harder to find extra space.

ND is still playing from behind based on JUCO and transfer difficulties, but the gap isn't as wide as it once was.

Yea totally agree. I mean only a few years ago I remember Alabama would have between 90-95 on scholarship during the summer!! And then right before the season you'd see a massive rash of medicals and transfers out of the program. Harbaugh was getting into hot water for running kids out on medicals and Saban was doing the same thing. I'm glad it has been reigned in a little bit.

Also, Ohio State and several other schools have recently had transfers after second semester ended. Notre Dame's last finals finish up today and grades are reported by this weekend. So I think you'll see a guy or two call it a day at ND or maybe some suspensions. Just prepping for the worst and hoping for the best...

I have Ohio State at 86, too, including one announced walkon given a scholarship. So, OSU knows there is someone else leaving. Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Clemson, USC, Stanford are all at or under 85 now. Mostly, under. ND and Michigan are at 87. Michigan had a smaller class in 2018 of 19 and missing out on some targets on NSD. Michigan usually has their grad transfers announcing early - Jan, Feb - and their count includes Shea Patterson. The Big Ten requires teams to be at 87 after NSD and, if not, to notify the league office of expected decreases that put them at 87. I am not sure about Penn State's numbers. Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and LSU rely on a number of players entering the draft early. I can't remember when LSU was at or above 85 by the summer. When Early Entrants are not at expected levels, that pressures HCs counts getting to 85 should they have the habit of taking 25 each year. More of these types of transfers come after sophomore and senior academic years. ND, of course, commits to graduating players, pressuring their numbers in a different way. We're seeing less fifth year players here lately. There's something to be said about having enough room to offer walkons a scholarship, especially with the cost of education at ND.

Wayne Davis, DB for Ohio State is transferring. Ohio State is at 85.

Alabama blocking departing player from transferring to SEC schools

Alabama is again blocking a player from joining another SEC school as a graduate transfer.

Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Brandon Kennedy is interested in transferring to Auburn or Tennessee but isn't even currently allowed to have contact with those schools, any other school in the SEC or any of the Crimson Tide's future non-conference opponents, sources told AL.com.

Kennedy, who ended the spring as Alabama's backup center, is in the process of appealing.

The Wetumpka native graduated from Alabama in December and is close to completing the requirements for his master's degree.

Kennedy was an early enrollee in the Spring of '15, redshirted his first year, played seven games in 2016, and three games in 2017 before a season-ending injury. He received a medical redshirt for 2017. So he has played for one year with two years of eligibility (?) and will be completing his Masters soon. As a grad transfer, he would study for another Masters or a PhD?

I know all of the graduate transfer rules are disparate and somewhat convoluted, conference to conference, etc., but the fundamental idea that an undergraduate degree granting institution can block a student athlete from competing because of the athletic department's competitive doctrine seems overly heinous. Shouldn't the spirit of the [NCAA] rule be that they are pursuing higher education in a post-graduate degree path not offered by their present institution? Am I missing something or is this complete bullshit?

EDIT: In the event I am not totally off-base in this line of questioning: Fuck you, Alabama. You were my 2nd team in the 90's. Now I can't stand to look at you.

Texas is looking at Alabama's two grad transfers, Dallas Warmack, OG, and Brandon Kennedy, OC. Warmack has a visit scheduled to Oregon, whose HC is Mario Cristobal, his former OL coach at Bama. Both have two years of eligibility left. Calvin Anderson, grad transfer from Rice, is a plug and play at LOT, replacing Connor Williams. Texas has two scholarships to give for '18.

Here's an article detailing the OL after Anderson's transfer.

John Belk, DT, announces his transfer from Clemson. Belk, a S.Carolina native, signed and enrolled early at Clemson this past January. He was ranked as the #7 DT in last year's class, #107 overall. Clemson did not restrict his choices of schools for transfer and SC is a possible destination. Belk will sit out a year but would probably have redshirted this year anyway. Clemson, counting six walkons given scholarships, is at 81 scholarship players.

Stetson Bennett, Ga's third string QB, who walked on but was highly thought of, is transferring, possibly to a JC in Mississippi. Ahead of him on the depth chart was Jake Fromm and Justin Fields. Fields enrolled in January and is competing with Fromm for first string QB. With Jacob Eason previously transferring, Georgia is left with two scholarship quarterbacks. Georgia has yet to obtain a verbal commitment from a QB for the Class of 2019. They have only one walkon who has spent a year in the program.

Here's hoping they go after Cade McNamara.

The Johnny Unitas Watch List contains some QB transfers. Some are graduate transfers, some went the Community College route from the school with whom they signed and some sat out a year as well as a few who went from FCS to FBS.

Graduate transfers include:
Keller Chryst - from Stanford to Tennessee
K.J. Carta-Samuels - from Wash to Colorado St
Ryan Finley - from Boise St to NC St
Gardner Minshew - from East Carolina U. (began at a CC) to Washington St
James Morgan - from Bowling Green to FIU (graduated in three years, pre-law, 3.88)
Marcus McMaryion - from Oregon St to Fresno St
Brady White - from Arizona St to Memphis

Shea Patterson received an exemption - from Ole Miss to Michigan

Sitting out a year:
Will Grier (2016) - from Florida to West Virginia
Jarrett Stidham (2016) - from Baylor to Auburn

From FBS to CC to FBS:
Bryce Perkins - from Ariz St to Ariz W. CC to Virginia (ranked #4 in JC dual threat QB)
Ty Gangi - from Colorado to CC to Nevada
Justin Hansen - from Okla to CC to Arkansas St
Kyle Kempt - from Ore St to CC to Iowa St
Jake Luton - from Idaho to CC to Ore St

From CC without signing to FBS school:
Jordan Ta'amu - Ole Miss (started five games over Patterson)

From FCS:
Hasaan Klugh - from NC A&T to Charlotte
Alex Thomson - from Wagner to Marshall

Arizona State and Oregon State have both had significant turnovers in QBs they have recruited.

For Oregon State (Signing years in parentheses):
When Jake Luton (2017, originally from Idaho via CC) won the starting job after spring practices, Marcus Maryion (2014) became a graduate transfer to Fresno St. Kyle Kempt (2013) is a graduate transfer to Iowa St. Seth Collins (2015) was switched to WR. Mason Moran (2016) was switched to Safety. Aidan Willard (2017) redshirted and is fourth string. Jack Colleto (2018 from CC) is second string, but battling for starter in fall camp. Conor Blount (a former walkon) is third string.

(Note: Blake Barnett has transferred again from Arizona St, having transferred from Alabama to ASU, and will be at USF. He is a graduate transfer.)

247 Dual threat QB rankings Junior College, 2018

On that note, LSU has just lost two scholarship QBs to transfers within 24 hours. The starting job goes to Ohio State graduate transfer QB Joe Burrows with last year's backup Myles Brennan the only other scholarship QB.
QB Justin McMillan announces transfer from LSU, Tigers down to 2 scholarship QBs
