Let me guess, he has a sick grandmother that lives near the UCLA campus and oh by the way, UCLA missed out on their #1 TE target. Mora starts his 'cruitin Feb 5th.

If by "lives near the UCLA campus" you mean "lives about 6 hours away in Auburn", I agree.

Scholarship Counts and Transfers

Scholarship Counts and Transfers

I thought that I would review a few programs in each of the Power 5 conferences now that spring football and subsequent transfers have subsided with their scholarship counts. Everyone will be at eight-five prior to fall camp. A few programs are over that now. A couple of these are under eighty. Most programs fall in the eighty-eighty-three area, with room for another transfer or to give a non-scholarship player a scholarship. (Scholarships by class from 2011-14 are in parentheses. Infrequently, a team may have one from 2010.)

I'll start with the Big Ten.

Ohio State - Sitting at 87. Almost all the movement occurred prior to Signing Day. In late November, Meyer announced two players would not return (Underwood, Carter). Nineteen scholarships were available now that the sanctions ended (Sixteen graduated plus the three from sanctions). Add four more when four players received medical scholarships (Johnson, Bogard, Reeves, Tanner) prior to Signing Day. Ohio State signed a class of twenty-six. Since then, one player from that class did not clear medically. (5-12-21-23)

Michigan - Currently at 81 scholarship players, where they were last year prior to giving four walkons scholarships. Thirteen scholarships were available due to graduation plus the four walkon scholarships. (Three of the thirteen chose to transfer for their fifth year.) Michigan signed a class of fourteen. One player opted for early entry to the NFL. Two undergrads transferred out. One player retired due to medical concerns. Three players transferred in (two graduate transfers). I expect one walkon with a scholarship will get one this year. Three other players's statuses are up in the air - one for medical reasons, two more due to suspensions. (4-21-27-15)

Penn State - Sitting at 82 scholarship players. Recruiting scholarship sanctions (3 scholies) were waived by the NCAA for the 2015 class. Penn State had seventy-one scholarship players last year and had eleven scholarships open up due to graduation. Since the end of the year, two players transferred, one more was dismissed after an arrest, and one more has left the team. Penn State signed a full class of twenty-five. Two walkons who had scholarships last year will probably get scholarships this year, making eighty-four. (8-14-11-24)

Northwestern - At 85. Fitzgerald had twenty scholarships to give and signed twenty recruits. Of note, Northwestern rarely loses players they sign. In the previous four classes, two players have transferred out, two players transferred in and one player transitioned to a medical scholarship - all in 2011 or 2012. (1-17-13-19-15)

Comments are welcome. (Mods may move this if it doesn't fit in this topic.)

Nice catch.

Looks like Jeff Driskel (grad tr) will be at La Tech.
Daxx Garman (also grad tr) will be at Maryland.

I think that you forgot Daxx Garman from Oklahoma St. to Maryland as a graduate transfer.

Edit: I see that you have fixed it now.

kid was in the Elite11 and probably the best QB Purdue got in yonks, shame it didnt work out for him

Hazell fed him to the wolves as a freshman and he got beat up pretty bad. They won't be much better this year. If he can find a better landing spot, power to him. My guess is Indiana State, at least for a year. He's from Terre Haute and my alma mater did make the playoffs last year, so it's not a terrible place to wait in limbo and see if any high major offers come through.

Big 12 Teams - Scholarship Counts and Transfers

Big 12 Teams - Scholarship Counts and Transfers

Here's a look at a private school (TCU) and a public school (Texas) from the Big 12:

TCU - Sitting at 86 scholarship players. From the nadir of four players arrested in a drug bust in February, 2012, TCU has climbed to the top of college football teams and remade itself with a spread offense. Three of the four players who transferred into the program have been at offensive skill position. TCU has two of the four fastest players in college football this year. TCU had eighty-four scholarship players in '14, lost seventeen to graduation, two players entered early to the NFL draft and one player transferred out. With twenty-one scholarships to give, Patterson signed twenty-one recruits with two recruits with verbal commitments accepting grayshirts. The 2015 class included five WRs, totaling fifteen WRs for their four WR sets. (TCU has eighteen offensive linemen.) In May, Kenny Hill transferred in, making eighty-six scholarship players. Two walkons are second string players. Of their twenty-two seniors, thirteen are on offense. Already TCU has thirteen verbal commitments.

Texas - Sits at 80 scholarship players. In contrast, Texas is still undergoing some major roster changes. Prior to fall camp 2014 under Strong, Texas had four players placed on medical scholarships, seven players were dismissed, two transferred out and three were suspended. Texas lost three more players in season - one of the suspended players was dismissed added to another dismissal and one player retiring from football. After the '14, Texas has had four more players transfer and one player entered the NFL draft early. Texas also lost sixteen players to graduation without any eligibility. Some of the dismissals involved players arrested with charges including sexual assault, domestic violence, and substance abuse. So, despite signing twenty-eight players, after NSD, Strong had eighty-one players on scholarship. One of the '15 signees did not qualify and three more have not enrolled due to academic difficulties. Texas has not had any players transfer into their program for over six years. For the first time in at least ten years - or ever - Texas signed JUCO players last year (3). Without any attrition, Strong probably will have twenty scholarships for the 2016 class. So, Texas may again sign a full class in order to reach eighty-five. Texas has five verbal commitments for 2016.

Pac 12 - Scholarship Counts and Transfers

Pac 12 - Scholarship Counts and Transfers

I'll cover four teams in the Pac 12:

USC - Sitting at Seventy-four scholarship players, counting two walkons that received scholarships in '14. Despite signing nineteen recruits for 2014, USC played with sixty-nine scholarship players last year. A full class of twenty-five has only increased that count by five. Ten players were lost to attrition - five entered the draft early, two graduate transfers, three undergrads transferred, one was dismissed. Two are on academic suspensions, but are expected back on track - and are counted. With an average of about fifteen players as Seniors, Juniors, and Sophs (16-14-16) with any attrition of five players a year, USC will only gradually recover from their sanctions.

Stanford - Has eighty scholarship players, counting two walkons with scholarships. Generally, Stanford averages a class of twenty recruits and relies on a higher number of fifth year players. Attrition has been higher with five graduate transfers out, one grad transfer in, and two players declaring early for the draft. Two recruits from their class of '14 went on missions. One previously signed returned from his mission.

Oregon - Sits at eighty-two scholarship players. Oregon had a small senior class of ten, signed twenty-two, accepted two graduate transfers (Adams, Hegarty), but had more losses than usual. Two were early entrants to the draft. Three undergraduates transferred. Unexpectedly, five players did not return for their senior season due to concerns about the cumulative effects of concussions/subconcussions.

UCLA - Sitting at eighty-two scholarships. UCLA had ten scholarships for '15 counting graduating seniors and three extra from '14, and signed nineteen recruits. Then four players transferred and two entered the draft early. This spring has seen four more players transfer. While depth may be a slight concern in the secondary and at QB, UCLA has eighteen starters returning - the most in the Pac 12 - and has the highest number of offensive line starts nationally.
