Great person?
Yes

Great recruiter?
Yes

Great coach?
Meh

Would this be a big hit to some of the players? Yes, but I'm going to go out on the limb and say this wouldn't be the biggest deal in the world. Also, I'm assuming I'm probably the only one who feels this way.

You fell down and hit your head. He is by far the best recruiter on this team. Not to mention a respected figure to the pkayers as a family member.

Autry Denson would be a good replacement if Alford leaves.

Ohio St. has shown some interest in him as well.

This is insane. Can we have 1 off season where something positive happens. I have always appreciated the stance on academics but, if you allow our strongest recruiter to walk out the front door for a lateral position that's insane. Tells me Alford see's something bigger wrong with his view of ND. Whether it is money, his opportunities to move up or the program who knows. This would be like letting your 4 hitter walk when you have the $ to spend. Makes no sense! **** Urbie!!!

It's time for somebody down in Gainesville to air out all the dirty laundry. There is a lot that surfaced after the Aaron Hernandez incident that didn't receive nearly enough attention.

Now if we had a good year I would expect this but after a bad year this is wierd. This almost seem like abandoning a sinking ship.

The thought of Tony Alford recruiting for Ohio State makes me sick.

I hope Kelly knew what he was doing picking Denbrock over Alford for promotion. How good was he at coaching RB's (not arguing he's a stud recruiter). Is he OC/head coach material? Hopefully we can find a guy that can sell ice to eskimos to replace him or make an offer he can't refuse.

Do you follow recruiting?

He is the main reason we get a lot of our elite recruits. As far as coaching goes, you may be right, but recruiting is much more significant to college football, and Alford is by far our best. We need Tony Alford.

Hahaha seriously though. Who on this staff, aside from BK himself, would even have a prayer of trying to recruit Florida?

Some of you are a lot more dialed in than myself on this. I know from reading here that Alford seems like a great guy and amazing recruiter. My question is, why has he not elevated above running backs coach? Clearly people know his value in the other aspects, is he just an average coach? I'd really hate to lose a guy who sells ND so well. If it's something money can solve, throw it at him. Unless he feels disrespected in some way and Urban promised him he will be the next Percy Harvin.

Tony seems like a smart enough guy to look past the fake Urban Meyer that the media tries so hard to parade for us. Urban is a phony, and Alford seems to keep it too real to associate with someone like that. On the other hand, money talks.

I'm so glad I pulled the plug on caring when Kelly was flirting with the NFL. Being a casual fan has its rewards.

It may not be money, it maybe a clear path to promotion and not being just a RB coach forever. Meyer may promise him a position that will have more advancement opportunities .

Like Cooks he's probably been been offered a shot at being coordinator. I'm guessing he thinks he's reached his highest possible level at ND and OSU offers advancement. Or, he's leveraging this.

We should just have Todd Lyght recruit everywhere

Alford is to ND what Stan Drayton was to UF/tOSU, what Frank Wilson is to LSU & what Bryan McClendon is to UGA. They are all the top recruiters in the nation. The main difference is Alford has restrictions. All these guys are RB coach & Asst HC or Recruiting Coord.

In all seriousness Autry Denson is the obvious successor. Young African American former pro with ND ties who has the ability to recruit Florida and built in connections down there.

Urban Meyer coached Tony Alford at Colorado State. He was the WR coach there for Alford's junior/senior seasons.
