Haven't posted in forever but had to on this one. Coach Alford was far and away our best recruiter. I am absolutely livid right now how cheap ND can be when their program generates millions upon millions of dollars. I understand them letting him go for a head coaching gig but going to OSU who actually gave him a raise which he has deserved the past few years is embarrasing for the program. He represented ND so well and he will be missed. I don't blame him one bit for leaving. I would too if I worked my a** off and wasn't appreciated. Good luck coach Alford.

Moose, Alford is a dynamic recruiter......no ifs, ands, or buts about it!!! Did he land 5* talent routinely????? No, but he landed kids that, otherwise wouldn't have ended up in South Bend, or a few that we had no business landing......the man works his ass off on the recruiting trail......something not easily replaced!!!!

It's a loss, no doubt, but Florida wasn't exactly a gold mine for us these past couple of years. We got Coney (thank you for sucking Florida) and we got Williams at the last minute bc we lost out on other RB's. And the year before we got Corey Holmes, and that's it.

If we can hire Denson, who has Florida ties, I think he has a shot at matching Alford's production these past couple of years in Florida. But someone else will have to take the mantle of taking the lead on a guy we must get. I personally think Denbrock would be great for that role, and perhaps Kelly needs to step up earlier as well.

Greg Bryant's two cents..

I wonder if this was right after Alford talked to the guys? Maybe he was the one holding GB back from playing time......... J/k but in all seriousness maybe GB thinks he was full of S&@$?

After reading the II interview with Alford its easy to see that he really does love Notre Dame. He was told by Colorado State that he didn't have enough titles on his resume. Said he was bawling his eyes out when he was talking to Everett earlier. Sad to see him go but it makes sense if his dream to be a head coach. Hopefully it's at ND one day.

Seriously though, I get people rationalizing, but the optics of this are terrible. I'll be very surprised if this upcoming recruiting class measures up to the last three given how hard it's going to get recruiting in our backyard coupled with the loss of longstanding relationships in Florida and Texas. People saying Alford "only recruited Florida" as if that somehow mitigates the loss of the most universally loves and respected coach on the staff... who also organized all recruiting efforts.

Yep no other way around it.

My words, we are not in a position for this to happen. We just won 8 fucking games and we lose our best recruiter and a huge part of the process. Let me know when we actually come back from this until then, this is embarrassing. Everybody that is down playing this, (much love) but you're absolutely kidding yourself if you believe this is no big deal or something of little impact, at least short term.

Oh yeah we're boned but we might be in the debate to be in the top 25 next year.

Anyone who gives effort has been able to recruit at ND. If kids come here to play for a certain coach, then they have made the wrong decision.

Good luck Tony

Boys don't cry. Only girls cry. Didn't you know?

Yep.

Then again, it seems that some men get castrated by girls ...

I know that THAT would make ME cry.

How about we wait to see who Kelly gets as a replacement and give that replacement a year or two, before we start talking about how bad it is. At this point, it's a challenge. Give the program an opportunity to meet that challenge.

Count me in the category of disappointed to lose TA. But everyone should come in off the ledge. He was a good recruiter, but Autry Denson, if that is the replacement, is currently coaching in South Florida and would seem to be an easy transition, given that he can sell the experience as a player. And, while I know that this may not be popular, lets not forget, BK inherited TA. (Yes, I know that TA had to earn the job with BK, so please don't bring that up.) He may be feeling some heat, so he may have used this to bring in some guys that he hired. Maybe BK hears the topics on this board and lately, some of the topics would suggest that the only coach earning his salary was TA and he thought there was undo credit. And lets not forget, while he is seen as a great recruiter, these teams have been 8-5 3 of the last 4 years (and the leaders of the 12-0 team were Weis recruits.) Maybe we need to target a different type of player to fit the system that we are playing (BK"s offense/BVG defense) and, god forbid, quit worrying about a star system that is based on who shows up to camps in the summer. After all, I found the most interesting stat from SB/NSD week is that there was not one 5 star recruit on the Super Bowl teams and more than 60% were rated as 2 star or lower.
Who knows? But, TA, good luck at OSU. Work your arse off so you can get out of there and I can root for you again!

The program has a challenge and that is two seasons of underperformance. Losing to bad teams and this certainly doesn't help.

It is a little impact for a very short time, every program is playing musical assistants right now and an assistant coach getting promoted is generally a sign of a healthy program. We will have a rebuilt staff shortly and assuming the product on the field is good this fall, recruiting will be just fine. If you are embarrassed by a running backs coach moving up somewhere else you might want to sit a couple plays out champ.

Can someone set up a Sportsbook event for Kelly leaving after next year? I want to wager on that.

The last time Notre Dame lost three assistant coaches in one season was after the 8-5 campaign in 2011, when Warinner and Hinton departed for Ohio State and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Charley Molnar was hired as the head coach at Massachusetts (and fired after just two seasons). The Irish responded with a 12-0 regular season that season and No. 1 ranking before falling 42-14 to Alabama in the BCS Championship.

I think the only bad team that we have lost to, in the last two years, is Northwestern this year.

Haha, thanks champ! The product in the field hasn't been very good as of late so acting as if this doesn't hurt is insane. Our team just won 8 games. I'm not usually a sky is falling guy and I'm not even saying that now but to act is if this team has been productive is downright silly. I understand reasons, in fact I make them, but there are results and there is no way this makes short term results better.

Side note, you don't need to refer me as champ, if you have something to say, say it no need for condescending comments like that.

Without looking that's a fair point and that in it of itself is downright terrible, especially at home. Sorry guys we just won 8 games that is a reality. This team has enough talent to be good but we also did the last two years.

2015 is the year for Kelly if not fire the man.

How would people feel about 9-3 and a bowl win for 10-3?

I'd be very pleased with any scenario that ends with double digit wins, bowl win or not. But, a 10 win season with a bowl win being the tenth would be great.
