Since it sounds like Ryan Grubb, WA OC, may have a shot at WA HC opening, maybe KD talks with Tommy and decides to keep him there?

The 2022 offense also was an absolute disaster the first 3 weeks of the season. They started off 1-2, almost 0-3 and the offense was a huge reason why.
It was…..Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner weren’t setting the world on fire and a year later, look where they are……one is transferring again and the other will be playing lacrosse. Not sure the best OC could have remedied the issues out of the gate in 2022.

What has Tommy Rees done to warrant an NFL job?
I thought the same thing when former QB Coach Matt LeFleur was hired as HC of the Packers. Now I’m open to anything being possible b/c I’m not an expert on CFB or NFL coaching nor do I know what goes on behind closed doors in coaches’ meetings on either level.

He recruited them.

Edited:

I think it's a fair question. Most importantly the distinction between deserving and fit. I think Tommy’s strengths are what make the NFL a good fit. And his weaknesses, recruiting, make a poor fit for college. While I don’t see a resume that’s necessarily deserving, I do see the fit. Would it be surprising if the NFL did as well?

Tommy has had good results as an OC for two different big time college programs and well known coaches. He’s already spent time in the NFL. And, whether we agree with it or not, continues to make these lists.

It's not me/us that's interviewing him or talking with him that thinks he's qualified, it's guys that are much more successful coaching football than all of us combined, that are.

Coaching circles continue to talk about him and are enamored with him. We can disagree and they could ultimately be proven wrong but that's very real to all parties involved.

No different than, do I think he’s deserving of being the HC at Bama? No, I don’t. But Bama thinks he belongs on the list. That’s more than a lot of coaches can say. Oregon interviewed him for their OC position before he accepted ND's. How many OC's did Oregon interview? It's beyond obvious at this point that a lot of people see something we do not. Kind of hard to argue with it at this point.

There’s a difference between Tommy the OC in charge of the offense and Tommy the OC for McVay/Shanahan/McDaniels.

Reesy should go and head coach at a mid tier program like Duke or (insert) and actually start earning his reputation by getting results.

Is being buddies with McVey still a requirement for NFL jobs? Tommy has that on the checklist 😂

He's OC'd 3 top 25 offenses per OFEI, in the last 4 years.

I have no idea what the numbers are and I'm not going to look it up but how many OC's can say they have done that? I'd bet the list is rather small.

I think McVey is more a ND fan than a Rees fan. We should hire his wife as an assistant and lure him over that way.

True but we’re not privy to BK’s influence on those decisions. I just don’t think Rees deserves all the blame nor all the credit……I have to believe there were a lot of factors involved behind the scenes when he was coaching at ND. None of us on the outside know how BK manages his staff behind the scenes and how decisions evolve. I don’t think Rees has proven himself to be a top coach or recruiter yet either, we’ll see how it plays out over the course of his career. I would totally agree with you that Pyne and Buchner were poor recruiting decisions, whoever made them.

The same sort of logic for why Oarker would get a HC job is being used to consider Tommy Rees for a HC gig at Bama. Not sure why he would even be considered since he doesn’t even check a DEI box. Has he been rumored for any HC gigs anywhere yet? I wonder if he will get the boot from the new coach. If I were Tommy I would have a bag packed. Hope he’s in a furnished apartment.

I rumoured him to Grand Valley State a couple of years ago.

Yeah I’ll be the first to admit he’s not a good recruiter or just hates recruiting but that’s not required in the NFL. I can’t get away from the fact the after Buchner went down & they were 0-2, Rees took a horribly under-qualified QB (yes, that he recruited) and turned the season around to finish 9-3. I mean, Drew Pyne; was a 3rd string QB at a horrible PAC12 team this past season yet Rees was able to scheme the kid to lead the offense to an 8-1 finish.

He gets to much credit for that. ND only beat teams we were way better than all across the field.

Then what’s ASU’s excuse? They didn’t play a gauntlett and Pyne couldn’t hold the starting role & had zero takers in the transfer portal.

Pyne was injured most of the year, but I don't think it would have mattered.

I think he finds a gig in the NFL under the Sean McVay coaching tree. McVay loves him for whatever reason and I think Tommy is done with college

There’s also nowhere for him to go in college right now that would really be a step up from where he’s been.
He has successfully OC’d two elite programs. He doesn’t feel like P5 head coach material from a face-of-the-program perspective, at least not right now. He’s still pretty young.
Go work in the NFL for a bit. College will still be there if he wants to come back in a few years to run a program.

He so deserves our care and concern. Not enough silver spoons in his mouth. Blessed be his future.
