Maybe from a historical perspective going from ND to Bama is a lateral move, but going from serving under new HC Freeman to GOAT Saban is anything but. Being on Saban's staff and learning how he organizes & runs things, and how he evaluates talent and analyzes tape is a major career enhancer that will give you a leg up in every future job opportunity.

As for maintaining the status quo, that's not as easy as it looks. Bill O'Brien is a former CFB HC and NFL OC and he couldn't do it. Kiffin and Sark could, but not any others. And just maintaining the status quo for Kiffin and Sark did a lot more for their careers than just making them look like place holders. Nobody looked at them and said, "Well yeah, anybody could run that offense with that roster talent." No, there's a lot more to it than that. Maintaining the status quo at Bama is difficult and doing so earns you MAJOR kudos and opportunities. If Tommy succeeds at Bama, the CFB will be his oyster.

I would agree the O didn't exploit the bucks-however my perception (I heard from somewhere) was MF wanted a ball control offense in this game-preventing scoring in bunches. Always wondered if that ticked TR off.

look alabama is gross and if you perform at an NFL level in ND you will get into the league with the same performance at bama. it seems pretty clear that tommy thinks he is an incredible coach and is salty that sexy coach marcus immediately locked down the HC job he was never seriously considered for. tommy leaving for bama just shows he felt like he was slighted by ND because if he performed at a super high level at ND any P5 head coaching job or NFL coordinator job would have been available to him

He will also benefit, as a coach, from learning a new system/program/coaching style.
Almost regardless of results - unless they are terrible, which is unlikely - he's better off spending two or three years at Alabama than he would by spending another year or two at Notre Dame (where he has already spent almost his entire football career). He'll learn different systems and become a better coach, with broader experiences. And he's young enough that that'll be valuable to him long-term.
Call it "lateral" if you want but going is kind of a no-brainer. From his perspective.

That’s a rough DC hire on the surface by Saban. But I’ve been told by some that it’s literally impossible that Nick could make a bad coordinator hire, so I’m sure it’ll work out.

Not quite. 3rd year, but his 1st class were all underclassmen Sophomores this year, and they made up a large portion of the contributors on that offense besides Mayer and to a lesser extent Tyree. Alt, Fisher, Buchner, Estime, Colzie, Thomas, Diggs, and some flashes from Evans when Mayer wasn't the focus.
