Alabama and ND are farther apart than ND and North Carolina in blue chip ratio. So he will have access to talent he never had and will never have at ND. He can run whatever he wants there without limitations.

Also, his fiance loved Tuscaloosa and the visit. Also, Saban.

The only thing that would keep him at ND would be it is his alma mater, but at a certain point that stops mattering.
I agree with everything you said. It’s still not a good look for the state of the program in my opinion. I’ve tried to keep a positive outlook in the current climate, but it’s getting harder to be one of the have nots in this arms race.

Didn’t Coach Built Bars tweet out only support for Freeman after ND’s offense crapped out two inexcusable loses against Marshal and Stanford? Now he is podcasting reasons for Tommy staying…. I say polish those Built Bars w some Mountain Dew and realize ND will be great if Freeman is allowed to make this hire.

I always thought Rees was a pretty good play caller and could scheme guys open. However, I hated how he managed the QB room. He had a pretty solid 7 month stretch of QB recruiting; But, overall, he left a lot to be desired.

How do you know this?

Agree the optics aren't great but also I suspect Rees is rapidly approaching the point in his career where it's time to step out from the Notre Dame umbrella if he wants to keep growing. If he doesn't go now, he'll go after the '23 season. Alma mater or not he isn't sticking around forever, and he shouldn't.
Would rather he leave for an NFL job or some HC gig than a "lateral" move in college football, but we all kind of know this isn't exactly that, is it?

I'm a Tommy fan but I just don't see him as head coach at a big-time program. Neither Notre Dame or (certainly) Bama.
He'll probably get a shot at some low/mid P5 jobs before long if he keeps doing well, but being the face of a program like that just isn't his game. Dude's a born OC.
Could be. I'm too lazy, but if someone would find out how many HC's in the NFL and college were QB's when they played, you'd get a tip of the hat from me.

It was in the Bama 247 "Nuggets" post.

I can’t help but feel the optics on this if he leaves are terrible. If finances weren’t going to be an issue, it looks bad for an alumni of the program to leave for the same job elsewhere a year after the HC. I know they are different scenarios, but what does it say about the program if the grass is greener elsewhere. Yeah yeah I know it’s Saban and all, but unless there is an underlying issue between MFMF and Rees, this is a bad look to me. If he leaves, best of luck. But damn this one bothers me more than baloney tits leaving last year.
I really don’t care about the optics or Rees leaving. I do care that the timing makes it harder to get someone really good. People here talking about it being impossible for Rees to turn down such a great opportunity yet he’s probably their 5th (or greater) choice. Seems like others found it easy to say no.

Guess Tommy didn’t enjoy the shackles coming off and needed the security of a hands on head coach again. Is his Daddy going with him to Bama or is Tommy all growed up?

Sorry, I hate Bama and will not wish him success there.

Considering his dad was the contact point from one article i read if Rees goes than the old man goes. You helped him get this job you are no longer welcome here.

A lot of you were calling for Tommy to be fired so now what are your thoughts? I still don't see how he leaves ND where he played with Hartman coming in and the offense we should have next year should be top 10 in college. Honestly our offensive situation is better than Bamas.

I would hope you are right. But like others have said there is way to many facts going against that.

-Wed zoom interview
-Thursday Bama plane picks him up at South Bend airport and in person interview.
-Takes is fiancé with him. (reports are she loved it)

Tuscaloosa smells like burning rubber. How anyone can choose to live there is beyond me. Maybe my nose is hyper sensitive, but I wanted to vomit when I visited.

I dunno about college, that's too much work, but was curious so looked at NFL coaches.
There are seven right now who played QB at least in college. (Eight if you count Kingsbury since Arizona doesn't have a HC at the moment. Interestingly only two - Frank Reich and Kevin O'Connell - had a significant NFL career. Only a couple others were even big-time college starters.

QB and safety seem to be the two most common positions.

Why Lynch?

No knock on him. I actually know him and he's a good guy. Curious what your take is
He a coaches kid from a Midwestern football family. Clark Lea trusts him, and I still think highly of Lea as a football coach and person.

I think he can do very well in a situation where he has more resources and access to talent. He's also got six kids and may not want to move around much.

He was offered the job during Wednesday’s interview. Therefore, going to Tuscaloosa the next day means he probably wanted to check things out before accepting and finalize some of the details. I don’t see how he comes back after having a Bama plane pick you up in South Bend. The optics of it all look terrible.

Funny people hated Kelly for leaving for LSU but its somewhat more understandable or subdued criticism when Tommy leaves for Bama. Kelly was not an ND Alum....

The pay is the same. So why leave? To win a Natty and play with better players than at ND? But isn't that the supposed stated goal at ND is to play for Nattys. Ah but saying you want to hit the goal of winning a Natty and doing EVERYTHING you can to win is not the same thing.

And the Chefs are also better at the SEC too. It probably boils down to Saban being so much better than Freeman as an Assistant.

I guess all things can be rationalized.

If this happens this is all good for ND. Just like players want to play for teams that send kids to the NFL, coaches want to coach for programs that will help them advance to better coaching positions. This move will hopefully attract alot of very talented coaches.

I don't think I ever wanted him fired but I didn't want him hired because I thought there were better/more proven options like Moorhead, who reportedly would have accepted the job.

This time around, who knows. Before landing on Rees, Saban reportedly tried to get a bunch of those proven options including Grubb, Moorhead, Brady, Lebby, and others. So if they wouldn't go to Bama, they probably won't go to ND.

Of course it will be fine. Freeman will select his OC and therefore will "own the program more." That is a very good thing towards his development as a HC.
